Good job, Rob. Going to make this the official thread for the whole season, unless there are any objections.

Going to give the Super 14 some serious love on this forum this year, ahead of the Rebels representing Melbourne next year and entering the competition accordingly.

    Opening-round Super 14 results for 2010...

The Hurricanes and the Blues opened the season on Friday night at North Harbour Stadium, Albany, with the Hurricanes collecting a 34-20 win thanks to an emphatic second-half display.

At Members Equity Bank Stadium, in Perth, no joy for the home side as the Brumbies beat the Western Force, 24-15, as the Brumbies' Stirling Mortlock became the first player to accumulate 1000 career Super League points, behind his three conversions and a penalty goal.

At Free State Stadium, in Bloemfontein, in the match between the Cheetahs and the Bulls, the Bulls began the defense of their 2009 title in immaculate style, with a 51-34 win.

At Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Reds v Waratahs, in a come-from-behind 30-28 win for the visitors.

At Coca-Cola Park, Johannesburg, great opener for the Stormers against the Lions, by a 26-13 final.

At ABSA Stadium, Durban, a last-gasp penalty goal from Stephen Donald gave an opening-round win to the Chiefs against the Sharks, by a 19-18 final.

And finally, at AMI Stadium in Christchurch, five different players scored tries for the Crusaders against the Highlanders, in a 32-17 win for the Crusaders.

Bonus points for the Crusaders and the Bulls.

    Great coverage, babytiger!

    My picks for week 2:
    Highlanders
    Crusaders
    Shark
    Lions (come on Todd Clever)
    Western Force
Brumbies (With Elsom and Giteau I think they are the dark horse of the comp)
    Waratahs

Getting everything from sportal's Australian site, on their rugby page, as well as from the official Super 14 site.

If anyone knows of other good sites with lots of usable information, feel free to add it here. As well as any news links.

I'd like our coverage of the Super 14 to be as information-driven as what I've done over the years with the weekly AFL threads. But that's only going to be as good as the contributions here, and the discussions that follow.

Heavens Game is a good website that covers the whole rugby union landscape, but most importantly the Super 14.

Very interesting and informative site -- and it's a plus that it includes video features, too.

    Brumbies looking

I know I picked the Crusaders to win the Super 14, but the Brumbies really looked good this weekend. Does anyone know the name of the Brumbies hooker? He is a force to be reckoned with.

The Rebels vs. Brumbies has a good ring to it.

As much as I love FSC, tthe soccer-mainly reincarnation of FSW, I do miss the Super...well...12 back then. Some family friends expatted from California to Dunedin, so just based on that, I started watching the Highlanders. I like their colors and stadium, too, though the stadium is apparently due for replacement.

It would be great for rugby in America if they showed the Super 14. Nigel Melville the head of USA Rugby stated that because the top international rugby competitions are charging above the odds the american broadcasters aren't interested because there isn't enough public interest yet.

By the way who is your favorite player for the Highlanders.

And don't forget, there's always the route of streaming video on the internet. Our best option to watch rugby and AFL matches, referring to the majority of people who access this forum from overseas.

I saw it a couple of times on Skysports here in London. It was a great game and I thought my boy Clever did well, however It depends on what you want in a rugby game. The defensive effort by both teams was not existent, but this might be your thing.

For me I do like a high scoring game, but I equally appreciate some good counter rucking and a strong denfensive line that smashes the gain line.

The Stormers made it two wins from the two in this season's Super 14 after a comfortable 27-6 victory over the disappointing Waratahs in Cape Town.

Morne Steyn starred for the Bulls scoring 35 points as the defending champions were made to work hard by the Brumbies before eventually securing a 50-32 victory in Pretoria.

The Hurricanes continued their perfect start to the Super 14 season with a 47-22 romp over an injury-ravaged Western Force side at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.

A devastating second-half performance coupled with a breathtaking display of goal-kicking by Stephen Donald helped the Chiefs win a 137-point thriller 72-65 against the Lions in Johannesburg.

Naas Olivier kicked 14 points and Riaan Viljoen added the remaining 11 as the Cheetahs stunned the Sharks with a fine 25-20 Super 14 victory in Durban.

The Queensland Reds have broken an 11-year losing streak to register a brilliant 41-20 win over the Canterbury Crusaders in front of 17,880 at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The Blues survived a desperate late surge by the Highlanders to clinch a 19-15 win in their Super 14 match at Carisbrook on Friday night.

Do you think it had anything to do with the referees officiating of the breakdown. I mean since the new laws came in players on the defensive side have been killing the ball in the breakdown, but now it seems the refs have gone the opposite way an aren't letting the defensive side get away with this.

    2010 Super 14 round 3

Francois Hougaard scored his first two tries in Super 14 rugby to help the Bulls overcome a 17-point deficit and claim a 48-38 victory over the Waratahs in Pretoria.

Juan Smith's late try proved only a consolation for the Cheetahs as they slumped to a second Super 14 defeat in three games when losing 24-31 to the Highlanders in Bloemfontein.

The Chiefs finished off a brilliant three weeks on the road to start the Super 14 season with a 37-19 bonus-point victory over the winless Western Force at ME Bank Stadium on Saturday night.

The Blues have spoiled Queensland Rugby Union's one-off Ballymore homecoming, holding on for a come-from-behind 27-18 win over the Reds at the suburban venue.

The Hurricanes battled to a 33-18 Super 14 win against the Lions to maintain their perfect start to the season.

The Brumbies hung on for a nail-biting 19-17 win over the Stormers at Newlands thanks to a late George Smith intercept try in the dying minutes.

A much-improved defence and good finishing in the last 12 minutes when three tries were scored gave the home team an emphatic 35-6 win over the Sharks in their third-round Super 14 match at AMI Stadium, Christchurch, on Friday night.

    2010 Super 14 Round 4

The Cheetahs claimed a first Super 14 victory over the Hurricanes since 2006 when taking a 28-12 win thanks to accurate goal-kicking from Meyer Bosman and Naas Olivier in Bloemfontein.

Wing Bryan Habana's try at the death helped the Stormers secure an unlikely 33-0 bonus-point victory over the Highlanders in a mostly one-sided encounter in Cape Town.

The Waratahs have withstood a late onslaught from a desperate Sharks line-up to post an unconvincing 25-21 victory in slippery conditions at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night.

The class of the Crusaders showed in the second half as they pulled away from the Blues for a 33-20 win in their fourth round Super 14 match at AMI Stadium, Christchurch, on Saturday night.

The ACT Brumbies have accounted for the Johannesburg Lions 24-13 in front of a small crowd at Canberra Stadium on a wet and cool Friday evening.

After a worrisome start, the Reds have got themselves up to hand the Chiefs their first defeat of the season on Friday night at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton after trailing for much of the game.
