The walk the talk posting is for a road race's park and ride - not relevant at all. Most websites show the confed cup park & ride. Will have to be 100% sure before posting.

Ok -here is the best site for Park & rides to Soccer city - http://www.shine2010.co.za/Communit...ity-2010-world-cup-games-transport-plans.aspx
in summary - if you stay in and around Sandton you can go to the Northgate dome, near Ellis park or the airport use Bez Valley Park, in Malvern, houghton or towards the centre of town use Wits and near Soweto use Nasrec. If you still need to book accommodation in Jhb a site close to the Northgate dome will be your best bet.

What are the transportation options from getting from Park & Ride to other places, like the airport? Are there safe taxis waiting there or is it better to make arrangements in advance?

There should be minibus taxis waiting there but if you have to go from a park & ride to the airport to catch a flight I would book transportation in advance. Sorry but their details are still very sketchy - am just going on what they did for the confed cup last year. Will keep this site posted if new info comes along.

    Nelspruit
Organisers have designated four park-and-ride sites: Nelspruit Rugby Club, Nelspruit High School, Bergvlam High School and the Agricultural Research Centre. The Fan Park is set to be housed up at the Agricultural Showgrounds.

    Rustenburg
Organisers will be counting on fans making extensive use of the park-and-ride facilities to reach the stadium on match days. Hubs to leave your car and hop on a bus will be located on main roads leading into Rusty: between the town centre and stadium on the old N4; at the Kloof Holiday Resort 500 metres from the Kloof Interchange of the N4; north of the stadium on the R565 from Sun City; and at the Show Ground to the west of the central business district. Frequent shuttle buses will connect downtown with the Royal.

    Durban

Frequent buses will shuttle back and forth between the city centre and the Moses Mabhida - named after an anti-apartheid campaigner - on match days, while park-and-ride facilities will be sited at a number of Durban's main shopping malls.

    Soccer City

Leave your vehicle at one of the designated car parks around the city (Marks Park in Emmarentia, Bezuidenhout Park near Ellis Park, Wits West campus at Wits University and Montecasino in Fourways) and catch
a bus to and from the stadium.

    Polokwane

Shuttle buses will offer services between the stadium and downtown.

well...you dont wanna alarm people, just make them aware not to stop and pee next to the road or something like that.... :D

ps. they are usually at selected intersections - best to do is to look out for shrubs or bridge pillars where someone may hide behind. I.e just be on the lookout for someone that may approach your car. Try and catch the traffic light green if there is one... eg. driving slower when its red to catch it green.

No need to panic though...just at least be on the lookout just as one would a "high accident area" sign....

    Great info here thanks.

for those who know the area are the "park and walks" a good bet. Seems the most obvious option.

Giving the GPS co-ordinates was a good idea too. Might seem obvious but you'd be amazed how hard it can be to get them.

    Getting around made easy

    (LOC) Friday 16 April 2010
The nine cities which will host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in June and July have made sure that getting to the stadium on match day will be the last thing that fans have to worry about. Here is a summary of each host city’s transport plans for the tournament:
    Johannesburg
Both Ellis Park and Soccer City stadium are serviced directly by commuter rail, so going to the game by train is simple. The Bus Rapid Transit System, a new public bus system, also services both stadiums directly with origins in Soweto, the Johannesburg central business district (CBD)and the northern suburbs. Gauteng provincial government will finalise an initiative for airport transfer services from OR Tambo International Airport to Johannesburg and the capital Tshwane/Pretoria. Park Station, in the CBD, will serve as a key hub for long distance transport into the city and supporters will be able to access city services from here. Park and ride sites - where spectators can park their cars and catch a lift to the stadium - will be implemented at various sites throughout the city.
    Soccer City stadium
    Park and Rides:

    • Wits Campus, Enoch Sontonga Avenue, Braamfontein
    • Gold Reef, Data Crescent, Ormonde
    Park and Walks:

    • Ormonde Shareworld, Shaft 17 and Nasrec Road
    • Aeroton, Rand Show and Adcock Ingram Road

    Tshwane/Pretoria
The city will provide rail services through Metrorail which will service Loftus Stadium directly. A park and ride system will be implemented from various sites in the city. The city has also identified an area in one of the park and ride sites which will accommodate long distance bus services on match days. A partial bus service will also be implemented.
    Park and Rides:

    • Pretoria Sport Union, Totius Street
    • Sports Campus, University of Pretoria, South Street Extension
    Park and Walk:

    • Pretoria Technical High School Corner of Park and Wessels Street
    Cape Town
Cape Town’s World Cup transport plan includes commuter rail, the Integrated Rapid Transit System, (same as the BRT in Johannesburg), park and ride services and an airport shuttle from the Cape Town International to the stadium and designated transport hubs in the city. The city is also developing a long distance transport hub and services to the FIFA Fan Fest and the public viewing areas will be provided by existing public transport. Twenty-two of the city’s rail stations will function as park and rides ferrying fans to the stadium and back again on match days.
    Park and Rides:

    • Upper Campus, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch
    • Camps Bay High School, Victoria Road, Maidens Cove, Camps Bay
    • Kroenendal Primary School, Andrews Road, Hout Bay
The city has also identified 22 train stations which will act as park and rides. Visit www.capetown.gov.za to find out more.
    Durban
A commuter rail system operated by Metrorail will transport supporters close to the stadium precinct. The city is also implementing a network of park and walk sites including on the beachfront area where supporters will be able to leave their vehicles and walk to the stadium along a pedestrian walkway network. The park and ride facility will comprise parking sites and three shopping centres, which will feed the stadium through shuttles.
    Park and Rides:

    • Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Palm Boulevard, Umhlanga Ridge
    • Pavillion, Jack Martens Drive, Westville
    • Galleria, Moss Kolnick Drive, Amanzimtoti
    Nelson Mandela Bay/ Port Elizabeth
The city will have park and ride services at three sites around the city with shuttles ferrying supporters to the stadium. Park and walk services will be implemented at one site in the city. A street parking plan to accommodate supporters close to the stadium will also be implemented. There are also plans in Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth for a BRT bus system to be operational for the FIFA World Cup.
    Park and Rides:

    • Andrew Rabie School, Argon Road
    • St Georges Park, Park Drive
    • Kings Beach, Beach Road

    Mangaung/Bloemfontein
The city has provided pedestrian facilities from the Bloemfontein Station, a key public transport hub for the FIFA World Cup. Long distance rail will terminate at the station. Long distance bus travel will be accommodated in the CBD close to the stadium to allow supporters to walk to the match. Park and ride sites will be located in two sites in the city. Existing public transport will transport supporters from the greater Nelspruit areas such as Whiteriver and Barberton. Park and ride facilities will be placed on the outskirts of the city to deal with the large influx of fans from Gauteng who will travel to Nelspruit along the N4 on match day.
    Park and Rides:

    • Nelspruit Showground, Loco Road
    • Nelspruit Rugby Club, Kiepersol Street
    • Nelspruit High School

I am SO in trouble - I have told everyone to stay close to Montecasino - it WAS listed as a park and ride now not anymore - my bad. I presume when they say a bus system from the Northern suburbs that they will service Montecasino and the surrounding area though.

what exactly is the commuter rail? Is that the everyday train system that all the tour books have told us not to take or is this some new system?

There does seem to be a bit of re-writing of history here..
I specifically picked accommodation nr Bez Valley Park on the basis it would be a park and ride for both stadiums.
(I can still find about 10 sites on the web tonight that suggests it will get me to Soccer City via Park and Ride.
(Newspapers and sites that are gov.za etc) However the above link suggests it won't...

    Grrrr..

Commuter rail = Metro rail. If you are not travelling alone should be fine because it can get you straight to the stadia. Safety is supposed to be jacked up during WC.

Just a head's up that Park and Ride tickets are now available for purchase at http://www.ticketbreak.co.za/

According to the latest info, you must pre-purchase Park and Ride tickets. They will not be sold at the P&R facilities on game day.

What a joke. I hope this applies just for purchasing the parking space. Do they charge you at the Park&Walk just for walking if, say, you've been dropped off by taxi?!!
