Sportsnet's Gerry Dobson just tweeted that big news regarding the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship will be announced on Thursday. Any speculation on what it could be?
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday perhaps a national tv coverage of the games-- getting ready for the MLS addition of vancouver and montreal and a national tv contract by 2012
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday I say they will be adding the CPSL champs to the Ncc. One day there will be 3 mls teams and 5 Usl to compete for the CCL.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday I guess that wouldn't be so bad. Playing a road game against the C(P)SL champs would be like another home game for TFC. Lots of people standing ... because there are hardly any seats in most C(P)SL grounds and 99% of the crowd cheering for TFC because most C(P)SL teams barely draw flies.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday So you think if TFC played against the Serbian White Eagles or Toronto Croatia they would not have any supporters there??? I think you would be surprised.
In my opinion I think the "big news" is that the schedule will be announced. If he knew something about a format change I'm pretty sure he would have speculated. I might be wrong. For some reason Dobson's tweets are too hyped up or just misread. Reminds me about the recent tweet about Ante Jazic which was misunderstood.
Both would have a vocal contingent - and probably some anti-MLSE hangers-on - to make some noise. I'd also imagine the game would be an 'away' game at BMO. Yeah, but until the MLS CBA is cleared up I doubt the schedule would be announced as big news - especially on the off chance the games won't be played after all. Have to figure the competition is changing somewhat, even if only to add a championship game after the round robin.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday They obviously have great followings in CSL terms, but cannot match TFC at all. As I side note, I did go to a game a couple years back when Serbian White Eagles beat the Toronto Lynx in penalties in the Open Canada Cup. That was depressing.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday Seems like it will be the same 3 team format...unless TFC is hiding something. According to this article on the TFC website... "The Canadian Soccer Association will announce the schedule for the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship at a press conference this Thursday 4 February at BMO Field in Toronto, ON. Head coaches for all three professional teams will be on hand for the press conference.Photos and audio clips will be available via the CanadaSoccer.com Media Channel at www.CanadaSoccer.com/media.asp. Video streaming will be available via www.torontofc.ca." http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/news/t...id=8016640&vkey=news_t280&fext=.jsp&team=t280
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday Though I did read that, and I wondered why they said "all three professional teams will be on hand ". I wondered why they simply didn't say "all three teams will be on hand". The phrasing seemed a bit odd to me if there was only 3 teams.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday A reminder that the Nutrilite Canadian Championship press conference will be streamed live online on TFC TV today at 1 p.m. EST.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday And here is the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship sked: Wednesday, April 28, Toronto FC vs. Montreal Impact, BMO Field at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, Vancouver vs. Montreal, Swangard Stadium at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, Montreal Impact vs. Toronto FC, Stade Saputo at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Toronto FC, Swangard Stadium at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, Montreal vs. Vancouver, Stade Saputo at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, Toronto FC vs. Vancouver Whitecaps, BMO Field at 8:00 p.m. All matches to be shown on Rogers Sportsnet (English) and <network TBA, possibly SRC> (French).
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday In essence, much of the same. The only thing that stands out is that the tournament will be played on successive Wednesdays from late April to early June, thereby giving it a uniformed flow. And that all the games will be on Rogers Sportsnet. Looking forward to it.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday So much for all the debate about the addition of an extra team...
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday The tournament is going into only its 3rd year. It'll be some time before other teams get added in.
Merged the recent NCC threads into a general discussion thread. Discuss the tournament here - including results if you wish. Note: we will have individual game threads for each TFC tournament match as well.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday In fact, when the tournament was announced it was stated that the current format would be the format for at least three years (of which 2010 is the third). Now, with things like this flying around: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Columnists/Jones/2009/11/30/11986986-sun.html I could see changes in the 2011 tournament. Maybe four teams (with Edmonton) in 2011 and 2012, five (with Ottawa) in 2013 and 2014, and six (with Hamilton) in 2015.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday I just hope they open it up to CSL, and possibly CPSL, clubs soon to make it a true Canadian Cup. Also, since the Provinces have there own associations then they could have tournaments to send the top clubs from those associations to the NCC.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday The problem is the lack of facilities. Outside of the Big Three, who actually has access to proper stadiums with broadcast facilities and so on? I can't see Sportsnet jumping at the opportunity to show a game from some public park with bleachers, as TFC travels to a Calgarian suburb to take on the AMSL champion. The reality is that this tournament was started in the 2000's, and as such does not have the luxury of building up from the same ridiculously humble beginnings of counterparts liike the FA Cup or US Open Cup. To generate interest, there needs to be media coverage, and to get media coverage, the CSA has to be able to guarantee a professional-looking product. As such, the only way to build this tourney is from the top-down.
I largely agree, though I think having one tier-two team (CSL/PCSL/PDL) in the tournament wouldn't take it down too much, and would be a great way for those teams to promote themselves to their local community.
Re: 2010 NCC Announcement coming on Thursday No, realistically, they'd get some fans out. Just as realistically, they should sell their home game back to TFC, play it at BMO, and pocket some big money.
