And yet a record crowd for NCC match. TSN is anti soccer, anyway. It eats into their CFL image in TO as well. but that's another story. great atmosphere at BMO last night. Great rivalry developing. Lots of nastiness on and off the pitch to build on our MLS Rumour reputation. Lots of TFC fans will want to head to Montreal on May 12th. C'mon Garber, unleish the beast!!
Interesting tidbit from the Europa Leauge broadcast: Fulham had less than 1,000 season ticket holders in 1996....115 years into their existance. Puts MLS numbers in perspective quite a bit for me.
FWIW - Stats showing average attendances in the league from 1997/98. 1997/98: 9,004 1998/99: 11,387 1999/00: 13,092 2000/01: 14,985 2001/02: 19,389 2002/03: 16,707 (played at Loftus Road) 2003/04: 16,342 (played at Loftus Road) 2004/05: 19,838 2005/06: 20,654 2006/07: 22,279 2007/08: 23,774 2008/09: 24,343 http://www.fulham-mad.co.uk/news/tmnw/fulhams_average_league_attendances_492403/index.shtml
I'd rather dispense with play-ins and get all MLS teams in at a round of 32. Five games from there to the title, for two teams. Doesn't seem so hard to me. When you have seven possible games from the first play-in to a possible title, hardware seems very remote. And most MLS teams are using few if any regular starters. This almost assures small crowds, and leads the whiny Big Soccer bottom-feeders to moan about attendance.
Since we got on the topic of meta-AAQs, I dug this old friend up, it's AAQs for each year as of the end of last season: 1996 - 3 1997 - 10.5 1998 - 12 1999 - 12.25 2000 - 13 2001 - 9 2002 - 5.5 2003 - 8 2004 - 6.5 2005 - 10.5 2006 - 5.75 2007 - 1.25 2008 - 2.75 2009 - 4 One caveat: I did it by hand, as it was before the nifty new formula, and Ms. Feltham once asked me if I didn't particularly like math.
This is the exact same thing I mentioned earlier. I am quoting my previous post, although please remember my numbers are for 15.4% of season.
Curts last game as coach. 12,089 Wow . This was only this past Thursday.. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEun93iTVoQ"]YouTube- Curt Onalfo - U.S. Open Cup Review[/ame]
As I said earlier, the 20,000 or so who were at the season opener will be the season's high water mark.
12,659 in Salt Lake. I was in attendance and can tell you that it was downright frigid and rainy. Lots of people were huddled up on the terrace and some people were giving up and going home in the second half.
I will tell you that the DC United team this year is by far the worst team it has ever put on the field. There is practically a revolt with the fans over the incompetence with the FO and coaching staff the last couple of years. I would not be surprised to start seeing sub 10k attendance. The 12k today was even worse that it appears since this was a double header game with the Freedom. In all my years as a season ticket holder starting in 96, I have never seen such anger at the FO and outright ridicule heaped on the teams play. DC has a very knowledgeable football audience and this crap that calls itself DC United is digging its own grave.

36,219 in Seattle. It threatened to rain most of the day. The mariners played earlier in the day and it rained a little. Fortunately, it held off for the Sounders.
FWIW: Mariners drew 30,225 in Seattle a few hours earlier and about 200 yds away. Wonder how many, if any, went to both?
