Following a fantastic 2009/2010 year where we achieved 10.000 points and finished 6th overall let's hope we can take that momentum and build on it. This year we are only sending 5 teams so that means less dead weight and since Porto, Sporting and Braga will likely make it to the EL group stage we should do even better. Here's how our teams break down. Benfica will start in the CL group stage. Braga will go into the 3rd round qualifiers for the CL Porto will start in the 4th round of the EL and showed breeze to the group stage Sporting will start in the 3rd round of the EL but should be seeded throughout the two rounds and like Porto reach the group. Maritimo will start in round 2 of the EL. Although they will probably be seeded in this round once they hit the next 2 they will face some stiff competition. Chaves didn't get a European License to play so regardless if they beat Porto for the Taca will not participate in the EL. http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2011.html
Re: 2010/2011 Portugal Coefficient watch [R] Here is Braga's current situation: What is known for the 3rd round is as follows: Seeded: -Zenit -Ajax - - - Unseeded: -Gent - - - - Unknown: Kiev Braga Celtic Greece: Playoffs under way, Olympiakos currently in second. They are very strong AEK, PAOK or Aris finishing in second would be better Swiss: FC Basel currently second 3 points back of Young Boys. I'd rather play the boys then Men. Romania: 5 horse race right now. I would like to avoid Unirea, Steau or Cluj and hope Timisoara or Vaslui finish second. Turkey: Bursaspor in 2nd with 3 games to play, Galatasary 8 points back and Fener only 1 point back. Best case scenario is Bursaspor wins one game and Fener becomes Champions. In the 4th round the 5 winners will meet: Seeded: -Werder -Tottenham - - - Unseeded: -Sampdoria or Plaermo - - - - Unknown: France: Auxere, Lyon, Lille or Montpellier. Lyon is obviously who I don't want in 3rd. Spain: Sevilla or Mallora. Both are dangerous. Sevilla are a danger to anyone and Mallorca is deadly at home. So depending on who advances from round 3 (2 of Kiev, Zenit and Ajax all known to have higher coeff then Braga not counting the unknowns) and who finishes in the CL spot for France and Spain Braga have a very outside chance of being a 4th round seed, but even being a seed means playing a quality side. If we get tossed out of the 3rd round we will go into round 4 of the EL qualifiers and will most likely be seeded. If we manage to get to round 4 of the CL qualifiers and fail we will go directly into the EL group stage. My guess is we will be in the EL barring some minor miracles. http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/seedcl2010.html

Portuguese teams in Europe 2010-11 {R} Hey y'all, I used to do a thread on this every year but got sidetracked the past few seasons. I thought I'd start one up again this time around, because I've been encouraged by the badass start Portuguese teams have had early on in Europe. We've got five teams in the mix for 2010/11, and of the five games they've played so far they've won all five, including some really impressive scorelines (Braga 3-0 Celtic, Maritimo 8-2 Bangor City). Aside from the scorelines themselves, it appears that (barring unprecedented collapses), we're going to get all five of these teams into the group stages of one of the two competitions. This is important because what's hamstrung our UEFA coefficient in past years is the 1-2 teams who crap out in the early qualifiers, dragging down the average. Another thing to watch for this year is how we'll fare in the UEFA standings overall, vis-a-vis other nations. There's a very real chance that we can end up the year in 6th place, behind the big five (and there's enough of a gap between us and France that there's no real chance of passing them unless something changes profoundly in the next few years). We sit 8th now, fractions of a point behind both Russia and Ukraine, and with Netherlands and Greece far enough behind that it would take a big year from either of them to pass us. All that having been said, after the 5 qualifying wins, Portugal has a 9 total points for an average of 1.8. It's a great start, and let's hope they keep it up.
Re: 2010/2011 Portugal Coefficient watch [R] Damn that is truly balls for Braga in the next round. Those are all tough teams.
Re: Portuguese teams in Europe 2010-11 {R} Maritimo will need a lot of luck to get past the play off were they will face one of the big boys
Re: Portuguese teams in Europe 2010-11 {R} all the losers from champions league 3rd round will drop into the Europa League and will be joined by the teams below in a 2 leg Play-off AEK(GRE) Aston Villa(ENG) Club Brugge(BEL) CSKA Moskva(RUS) Dortmund(GER) Dundee United(SCO) Feyenoord(NED) GC(SUI) Getafe(ESP) Leverkusen(GER) Lille(FRA) Lokomotiv Moskva(RUS) Man. City(ENG) Metalist(UKR) Napoli(ITA) Palermo(ITA) Porto(POR) PSG(FRA) PSV(NED) Steaua(ROU) Tavriya(UKR) Trabzonspor(TUR) Vaslui(ROU) 3rd round Maritimo Liverpool Juventus Stuttgart Sporting Austria Wien CSKA Sofia Dinamo Bucureşti its going to be luck of the draw and thats for porto and sporting aswell
Well if 3 out of Zenit, Ajax, Kiev and Fener fail to make the next round we will be a seed. Currently Portugal has earned enough points to move all the way to 8th on the year. Usually we're around the 20's during the qualifying stages. We need to finish 2-4 points ahead of Russia and Ukraine by years end to move back into 6th place overall.
Re: Portuguese teams in Europe 2010-11 {R} True that--I had been thinking that qualifiers went direct into the group stage, but there is in fact another stage in between qualifiers and the group stage, and it will be challenging for our EL teams to get through that. At the very least let's hope Maritimo can get at least one more win in case things don't go their way next round.
Re: Portuguese teams in Europe 2010-11 {R} forca maritimo o orguhlo das ilhas welllllllllllll, im not worried. Sporting will beat Porto in the EL final this season and moutinho will cry like a little b*tch
Narrow loss for Braga today, 2-1 at Celtic, but they're still easily through to the next round. This means: 1. No UEFA points because of the loss; and 2. Based on what I read in another thread, they have to defeat one of Sevilla, Tottenham, Werder Bremen, Zenit or Ajax in a home-and-away to get into the group stages of the CL. The good news is that even if Braga loses in the next round of UCL qualifiers, they'll still be put into the group draw of the UEFA Cup.
Braga draw Sevilla in the Playoff. Again the toughest draw possible. I like it though, we have to earn our way in where as vs Ajax it would of been a pretty safe passage. Should we miss out on the CL we will go to the 2nd Pot of the EL group stage. In The EL: Porto will play Genk Sporting will meet Brondby Maritimo will face BATE All good draws.
Yeah, that's a tricky draw for Braga. I think they stand a solid chance, but Sevilla's no joke. OTOH, the other three draws are very winnable and that's a good sign. Though it's early daze yet in the competition, two qualifying wins yesterday continue to add to Portugal's overall point total. We're now 7-1 in qualifiers, for a total average of 2.2 points, good for sixth overall. Of far more moment, though, we still have all five teams alive in Europe, and no one yet has crapped out early (as with previous seasons) to bring down the overall average. Very excited to see if they can keep up this good form in the next stage of qualifiers.
Even if Braga falter they're through to the EL group stage. Sporting and Porto are locks and Maritimo should be capable of getting through. Anything can happen but so far, so (very) good.
Braga keeps rolling, beating Sevilla 1-0 in Portugal. http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/matches/season=2011/round=2000117/match=2002401/index.html This takes Portugal's early record in Europe to an insane 8W/1L/0D. No other country can match that so far, though it's very early days (and we get only half-points for these wins because it's only the qualifying stage). Still, great results so far that place us fifth in Europe with all five teams still in the picture.
Oof. Tough day. Porto wins 3-0 away at Genk, but Sporting loses at home 2-0 to Brondby, while Maritimo loses 3-0 away to BATE Borisov. Those latter two are going to be very hard to overcome, so it's quite possible that Sporting and Maritimo are both done. We remain 5th overall with 2.6 points, but having two of five teams exit in the qualifying stages is going to make it hard to have a banner year. So let's hope for some miraculous reversals in the next leg.
It was all going so well. Braga still have a difficult away trip to go through. Sporting dropping 2-0 at home will not be easy to match. Maritimo had they lost by 1 I think would easily overcome BATE in Madeira but 3 goals is usually enough to book a ticket to the next round.
Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. Wow. Sevilla 3-4 Braga http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/matches/season=2011/round=2000117/match=2002402/index.html Braga through to the group stages of the CL for the first time ever, in dramatic and inspiring form over a club with much European success that was considered the hardest opponent in this stage of the draw. If Braga can keep up this form they can do some serious damage in the group stages. Forca!
Oh, and this just in: Braga's historic win earned enough UEFA points to put Portugal top of Europe with 3.6 overall: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/ccoef2011.html This can and absolutely will change--there's no chance Portugal will outdistance all of the big four unless some kind of miracle happens. But it's a great start. If Maritimo or Sporting can pull off an unforeseen comeback, we could have a real shot at a banner year.
With all the hoo-ha over the CL draw today (both good results for Braga and Benfica, fwiw), there was less spotlight on the last qualifying matches for the Europa cup. So we have: 1. Porto 4-2 Genk This was a nice way for Porto to seal their already-expected progress at the expense of the Belgians, for an aggregate win of 7-2. Hulk got a hat-trick, and Portugal gets a UEFA point and Porto confirms their place in the main draw. 2. Maritimo 1-2 BATE Borisov This one was disappointing. I thought Maritimo had a real chance to advance past the Bulgarians, but even when they lost to them 3-0 away I thought they'd at least have a chance to get a respectable win in Madeira. Guess not. But this mild bummer was just a blip because... 3. Brondby 0-3 Sporting Sporting scored a friggin' miraculous reversal of their awful 2-0 home defeat, shutting out Brondby in Copenhagen, and getting an extra time goal to assure progress to the main stages of the Europa League. This means not only a UEFA point but the possibility for many more, so the result is a major one. Upshot is that Portugal completes a fantastic qualifying campaign in Europe, with 12 wins against 4 losses (and, interestingly, no draws), for a total of 4 UEFA points before the main campaign even begins. Let's hope the big four (yeah, I said that--Braga's earned that terminology, IMO) can keep up this form in the group stages. And we're still in first overall, which is kind of cool if not that meaningful: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/ccoef2011.html
Big week for Portugal. Have to feel for Maritimo not making the group though. They faught hard and gave us a lot of points.
