First post! (Apart from ntg) lol

Watching Dong in Poland, boy's got some benchwarming skills. Lucky boy gets to sit when others have to stand and run.

Haven't followed DongFZ in a while. Is he a benchwarmer again now? I thought he was doing ok in his Polish club team.

He's played slightly less than 90 minutes in his first half season with Legia Warsaw. He started once, got subbed in once, and was an unused substitute three times. That's 90 minutes out of 1170 minutes (13 matches). Can't compare him to Hao Junmin. Perhaps Dong will get more chances when he completes the summer preseason with the club.

Yeah, tis was a shame. Anyways, Polish season over now so see him next season.

    Anyone heard of this guy?

Apparently played for Atlanta Blackhawks before this (found him when looking at Jeremy Christie - NZ's club team)

I hope this doesn't prematurely spell the end of his playing career.

Come on B'ham sign him up!

pretty obvious Zheng doesn't want anyone else to sign him. He could have trained with Guangzhou and waited before accepting a contract with them, most teams don't do too much business during the World Cup, but once its over, I'm sure there's going to be a lot of wheeling and dealing, and teams may have come calling for Zheng at that point. Guangzhou is in 1st place right now and the China League break ends on July 17, so this all could have waited and Zheng could have seen if a Euro side tried to sign him.

If Zheng was going to Birmingham, it would happen before the 17th, Birmingham's China tour begins on the 18th in Hong Kong. Not sure how ticket sales are going down there, but in Beijing and Shenyang its going to be a joke. They're playing the match at the Bird's Nest and as of right now, they've sold less than 20,000 tickets, Guoan and the city sports bureau are talking about giving away tickets so that the stadium isn't completely empty. If Zheng was on Birmingham, it would slightly help ticket sales in Beijing, probably help even more in Shenyang (where sales are worse than Beijing) considering its his hometown.

i'm curious as to why Birmingham thought it is a good idea to do a china tour. it can't just be about the money and brand recognition right?

Because Carson Yeung deemed it is a good idea to do a homecoming China tour for his Fighting Carson Yeungs. And Chinese Xtep wants to sell Xtep products in China.

agreed, I think its purely about money and brand recognition. Carson's hoping bringing his team to the mainland will convince some Chinese to cheer for them and buy an Xtep jersey.

Mainly because of the work permit problem. Otherwise Carson Yeung could just sign a "promising" youngster.

So is the talk from Birmingham about them coming to China with an eye to sign a local player or two just lip service?

So is ZZ with a China 2nd division league team now? I guess at age 30 now and with no further interest overseas, going back to Guangzhou to play out the rest of his career makes sense. I wonder if he will get another callup to the NT now.

(sigh).....another one bites the dust :(

The sad thing is he's doing it by choice and for money instead of wanting to work hard. I understand how frustrating it must be to just sit on the bench, but if he went to Birmingham, I would think he'd have a shot at making the team.

He's only 30, its not that old, I would be absolutely shocked if he doesn't get another callup, though this is exactly the attitude we don't need around the younger players.

    Re: 2010-2011 Chinese Abroad [R]

While Zheng Zhi's decided Guangzhou was where he wanted to be (and the side only managed a draw in their first game back from break), it seems Birmingham might still end up with a Chinese player, the name will be surprising, Li Tie. We'll see if anything comes from this, but seems that both parties are talking.

Birmingham also is very interested in Zhang Xizhe, a youngster with Guoan who has been playing for the side's B team in Singapore. Guoan doesn't want him to go yet, in part because of a full set of Olympic team games, plus, of course, there's pretty much zero chance he'd get a work permit.
