VC - I have all the data points you're missing, I believe. I don't believe I'm missing any USL attendance figures at all for the last several years. I think. I think there were a couple missing in USL-2 last year, but I gots connections. I think I can get them.
Or we could do it that way! Code: USL1 % of season completed 1.2% Year Average Median %<2K %>10k 2009 3982 3982 0% 0% Final Numbers Year Average Median %<2K %>10k 2005 4527 3554 19.6% 7.7% 2006 4666 3370 18.5% 10.7% 2007 4821 4291 18.8% 10.3% 2008 5164 4510 10.9% 12.1% USL2 % of season completed 0% Final Numbers Year Average Median %<1K %>3k 2005 1680 1457 21.4% 11.9% 2006 1803 1703 14.1% 11.8% 2007 1575 1423 28.1% 6.3% 2008 1614 1629 26.0% 7.3% USL1's complete for 2005 now. As I suspected, the average and median weren't affected at all.

Yeah so there are your Austin (very good) and Miami (not terrible) numbers. Something about Miami's opener last season. I saw the thing... a gross exaggeration.
The Lonestars youth club was there. I'm pretty sure the entire club, and it's a big one, so that really helped the numbers. I hope we do well as well. We'll see how the rest of the season goes. The first game can almost always be discounted. The next two games will give us a better measure of how things will go.

This was actually a pretty good week considering no Portland, Montreal or Rochester home matches. VC, good to see you got some of the % of season numbers up for USL-2. Nice work.
you're joking right? I was at the game and when I got back, I was SHOCKED to see the number as low as 2100. The thought is that it was 2100 paid tickets (not including those given to youth clubs). Most of the stands on the north end of the field were full. Lockhart holds about 21,000 so that whole sideline probably holds about 6k. Not to mention, the supporters section had I would say about 100 people in it and that stadium was loud for the whole game. You can always find the negatives and try to push Miami around but the fact remains that that was a HUGELY successful opener. You clearly turned on the game when we were up 3-1 and mommy and daddy decided it was past Jimmy's bedtime and the outcome wasn't in jeopardy so they better take him home.
Yeah I thought Miami did better than 2100, but I also didn't think that they were sticking to just one side of the stadium. Still, I was surprised... maybe they were compensating for the obvious lie of last years opener
You can NEVER judge attendance by video. Though some teams try to get the reverse angle, many also end up filming the game from the same side of the field as all the fans. I know most of the cameras for the Austin game were up on the announcers booth, which was the same side as all the fans. The other side of the stands was completely empty. So if you had watched our game, you could very well come away with the impression that there was no-one there, when the 4891 number is quite accurate.
Hey, I'm just going by what I saw on the video feed. And when they showed what I thought was the supporters section there were only like a dozen guys jumping and singing. Don't fault me, fault the camera work.
Cameras can turn a mob into a half dozen, or a half dozen into a mob. You're the one making assumptions based on what you saw.
If they told you the drop count, cool. But I'm skeptical of anyone who says a given announced number is "accurate" or "spot-on" or "legit," just knowing what I know about what how teams do what they do to come up with the number at the bottom of the box score. I didn't see it, wasn't there, and it's not about Austin. I dig Austin (it's on my short list of potential cities in which to live at some point) and hope the Aztex do really well. It's not about you, VC, so don't think I'm ragging on you. I'm just saying that my meter goes off when someone says an announced figure is "quite accurate."
I think kenn spends 3/4 of his post talking about how announced attendance numbers are just that... announced. irony. Regardless, announced attendance is what is reported here and we debate that attendance. There is no harm in that. It's fun, even if it is mildly retarded. Otherwise, why even post in this thread (not speaking to you kenn, just saying that everybody in here has a reason to come in... I love to discuss attendance and such as do many others here.) On topic... I'm glad Miami decided to film from the opposite side their fans are sitting. It looks so much better than an empty tropical park. I hope Austin follows suit, I like "fan watching".
OK. Yeah, I guess I got a little excited. If by 'drop count', you mean turnstile, here's what I know about the Aztex. There isn't a turnstile at the HS stadium they use. So they have someone there with a hand clicker. There's obviously going to be some inaccuracy in that. They also include volunteers, which are not going to be counted at the gate, so there's a fudge factor added on of a hundred or so. Whether that's 'legitimate' is a whole side discussion that, as far as I'm concerned, isn't really the point of attendance threads, but inevitably ends up discussed anyway. Nelson field holds 10,000. No sure if that capacity is 'kid-sized' or 'adult-sized' since it's all-bleacher seating. They're only using one side of the stadium. The two sides are pretty much identical in size. The one side they were using was very full. So at a minimum, by using the completely inaccurate 'guess the crowd size by eye' method, I'd say there was at least 4,000 there. The point I was really trying to make was that with the online cameras working from the crowd side of the stadium (I know one was, and it would've been very confusing to put any others on the other side), there was plenty of potential for someone to say no-one was at the game because the other side of the stadium was empty except for a couple TV cameras and the ball boys. My apologies, Kenn, for going so far as to bring up the 'very accurate attendance number' issue.
I hope so too, but they may have limitations based on where they get audio for the webcasts. I know they were working hard to make sure the news cameras were on the opposite side of the field. Which was a bit disorienting when I watched the highlights afterward.
