The first two rounds of the US Open Cup have been announced this year, MLS enters in the third round. If they keep the regional set up for the third round when the MLS teams join, I'll bet we play one of 402 (USASA-Neb.), Minnesota Thunder (USL1), Milwaukee Bavarians (USASA-Wis.), or Chicago Fire PDL (PDL). Two of those teams (Minn, Chicago) have previously knocked us out of the Open Cup

I'm assuming that we are not going to try and win this cup. We sure as hell did not try last year and there is a Champions League spot for the winner.

Our first game in the competition is 2 days after the game against Santos in the SuperLiga.

Last night's results. I think we're going to get the winner of Minn-Chicago.

Orange County Blue Star 2, Sonoma County Sol 5
Chicago Fire (PDL) 3, Bavarian SC 1
Carolina Railhawks 2, Richmond Kickers 1
W Mass Pioneers 3, Emigrantes Das Ilhas 2
Wilmington Hammerheads 2, Charlotte Eagles 0 (Wilmington is a USOC terror)
Rochester Rhinos 1, Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1 (ROC advances on PKs, 4-2)
Cleveland City Stars 3, St. Louis Lions 0
Harrisburg City Islanders 4, Reading Rage 1
    Minnesota Thunder 3, Nebraska 402 2
Charleston Battery 2, Atlanta Blackhawks 0 (Atlanta had three players sent off)
Miami FC Blues 2, Lynch's FC 1 (Diego Serna with the gamer!)

According to Goff yesterday, we should know the 3rd round draw today. The TBones are out of town on the 30th so we could host at CAB.

Wouldn't it be more likely that it would be held at a smaller stadium like BVAC? Feels weird saying that........

Not if we can get that game at CAB. I'm sure the team would love to have that beer revenue.

I'm not sure that beer revenue would make up for the cost of using the stadium. USOC games usually dont pull more than 2K people.

Last year we had over 5K at SMN. But you're right, probably more than 2X what we usually draw.

Depends on how much more it costs to rent CAB for the game (if the Wizards have to pay per use on it).

Yeah, especially since BVAC is a 2-court gym in East Independence. Kinda tough to play soccer there...maybe an indoor game.

Unless you live in the Blue Valley School District and refer to the complex the way everyone else does....the BVAC

What he said. It's the stadium at 135th and Switzer where we have played numerous USOC games in years past.

He Knows....he's just making reference to the fact that previously it has always been referred to as the BVDAC.

I guess my Smartass-o-meter didn't go as high as it usually does for some reason when reading his reply. I must have been in shock that it was only a one line response. :D I never realized there was a "D" in there, but I guess that makes sense since the one in Olathe is known as ODAC.

Are you sure? Does that stadium even hold that many people?

    I'd guess it seats 6K to 7K.

At the time it was built (expanded?) it was supposed to be the third largest capacity outdoor stadium in Greater KC, obviously behind Arrowhead and Kauffman. Next would be William Jewell, which, if memory serves, seats 5K. We went over all of this a couple years ago when we were trying to figure out where we might play the Menace.

Yes, I do know. I've been to both often.

The Eastern one, the one without the "D", was where I played my first volleyball tournament in college...otherwise I probably wouldn't defend it. It's a pretty small place not really meant for adult competition. After having played there our club wouldn't go back. On the plus side there are full sized soccer fields around it. No seating, but you could probaly stand 2-deep all the way around.

Got a bone to pick. Not for nuthin but a single organization should not be able to enter two clubs in the USOC. Not because they might eventually meet each other (which is also shambolic) but because the farm club is likely to be fairly strong in its own right (given that it will have unusual access to resources) they stand to go fairly deep in the Cup, knocking out some decent independent clubs along the way. If they want to give their farm team experience against different competition levels, far be it from me to begrudge them but let them represent the parent club until they get to a point in the tournament that the parent club sees fit to play the first team.

While I'm redesigning the USOC rules, how about making the first round a prize round? How does this grab ya: amateur clubs winning in the first round win their entry fee back (assuming they paid an entry fee instead of winning some qualifying tournament). Maybe not for the MLS or USL clubs, but how big could the tournament get if the USASA clubs just have to win one game and the rest is gravy? I think a TON of teams would go for that deal, wouldn't they? If the field were large enough, it would still leave a significant purse to play for.

I assume you're referring to the Chicago Fire PDL team? While they have the Fire name, they aren't really a farm team of the Fire. They are like any other PDL team with college players on it that go into the draft when they leave college.

Thank God. Next question: Why would a PDL team (which will usually be indigent) pay the licensing fees to use an MLS team name? Has to be a story behind that because it sure doesn't make much sense on the face of it.

I think the second you exclude any "B", reserves, or farm club then you cease to have an Open tournament. At that point maybe a tiered system of League Cups to run concurrently to the USOC makes more sense.

I'd like to see a League Cup among USL-1, USL-2, and MLS. Have another for PDL and below. Trot out the Champions of this last one with a 4-min highlight package on the diamond vision and telecast to replace the embarassing, overpriced, and awful halftime show of the MLS Cup. All this with prize money enough to mandated the "A" rosters from the big clubs. Also, USOC Champ vs MLS CUP Champ in the pre-season for annual Charity Trophy in Vegas. It's probably past time.
