Reminds me of this Not saying it looks bad (it doesn't) I just hate anything that reminds me of that club!
show me a 3rd kit in blk and space city blue already Dynamo! That PHILLY mock crest reminds me of the first Houston mock ups.
Just because those are prestigious teams doesn't mean "design-wise" their crests are any good. I'm not sure about the Chelsea crest, but the "soccer ball" portion of the Man U logo goes all the way back to the sixties. Maybe further. Obviously it was a style of team logos developed during that time period. It's tradition, so it's fine for those teams. But keep it out of the newer crests. Very few other sports logos have the ball of the sport that the team competes in. Except hockey, which also seems to have the same issue with always wanting to put a stick or puck in their logo. Long story short, it looks weak. Create a concept and a brand. Don't just cop out by throwing a soccer ball in the logo.
I don't see the 2 as exclusive. if you are creating a brand, you want the costumers to know what your service is. and for mls, that service is playing soccer.
True, but you can design something that is a little more visually interesting. For instance, there are quite a few teams that have the ball in their logo. And some incorporate it into their design better than others, like DC's logo versus San Jose's. And some who don't have one at all, like Seattle who has a very nice mark. Then there's TFC, who has the maple leaf design at the top of their crest, but the shape is made out of the panels of a soccer ball. All I'm saying is that if you're going to incorporate a ball into your mark, do something different than making a black and white paneled soccer ball the most prominent thing in the design.
I don't mind having a soccer ball in the crest as long as it's done subtly, as an accent, rather than being a central part of the design. And, I definitely wouldn't want cartoony "action lines" coming off it.
I personally think it looks slick. I don't see it as any type of a cop out, except for the fact that you don't care for it. I'm not really all that fond of Seattle's crest, ball or no ball it just doesn't sit right, but that's my opinion. Yours seems to be based on whether or not it has a ball, that's lame.
In your opinion it looks weak. Art is subjective. Just because you don't like it, dosn't mean that others don't or dosn't mean having a ball on a crest or logo dosn't look good. Personally, I don't have a problem with a ball on a a crest or logo if done right.
Only because most logos that have the ball as the prominent visual in their logo took about 12 minutes to design and 12 seconds of thought. Trust me. Example below: I understand that design is subjective, but it's okay to ask for more thought when it comes to your teams mark instead of following status quo and accepting something that looks like a thousand crests before it.

I happen to like the EPL and La Liga logos. They are clean and simple. Personally, I don't like really busy looking crests or logos. Different strokes for different folks.
No, "all you said" was "no more soccer balls in logos". If you'd presented this more nuanced approach from the beginning, I doubt you'd have found much disagreement. ------RM
