I have a math question about the quarterfinal draw. If any first place club could be drawn against any second place club, there would be 24 permutations for the quarterfinal matchups (4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24). However, given the restriction that two clubs from the same group cannot play each other, how many possible permutations are there?
Here are the 9 (I think that's how many) possible permutations of quarterfinal matchups: 1. Pachuca vs. Marathon Toluca vs. Arabe Unido Cruz Azul vs. Comunicaciones Pumas UNAM vs. Columbus 2. Pachuca vs. Marathon Toluca vs. Columbus Cruz Azul vs. Comunicaciones Pumas UNAM vs. Arabe Unido 3. Pachuca vs. Marathon Toluca vs. Comunicaciones Cruz Azul vs. Arabe Unido Pumas UNAM vs. Columbus 4. Pachuca vs. Columbus Toluca vs. Comunicaciones Cruz Azul vs. Arabe Unido Pumas UNAM vs. Marathon 5. Pachuca vs. Columbus Toluca vs. Arabe Unido Cruz Azul vs. Comunicaciones Pumas UNAM vs. Marathon 6. Pachuca vs. Columbus Toluca vs. Comunicaciones Cruz Azul vs. Marathon Pumas UNAM vs. Arabe Unido 7. Pachuca vs. Comunicaciones Toluca vs. Arabe Unido Cruz Azul vs. Marathon Pumas UNAM vs. Columbus 8. Pachuca vs. Comunicaciones Toluca vs. Columbus Cruz Azul vs. Marathon Pumas UNAM vs. Arabe Unido 9. Pachuca vs. Comunicaciones Toluca vs. Columbus Cruz Azul vs. Arabe Unido Pumas UNAM vs. Marathon Which ones do you think would make it most likely for a Mexican club to lose?
the only way i see a mexican team failing to advance would be unam's third team vs arabe unido anything else, including unam's first or second team vs arabe unido, and it'll be an all mexican semi-final
I'd say that Marathon also has a chance - if they make use of their home-field advantage to win by 2 or 3 and then put on a masterclass of parking-the-bus that would make North Korea proud (and Montreal envious) in the second leg, they could sneak through. But hopefully, with all these teams getting to play in Mexico in this tournament, someone will finally be willing to play to win there (even with the altitude).
According to their website, Arabe Unido will play its quarterfinal home leg in the Estadio Rommel Fernandez, which will be finished prior to the match: http://www.deportivoarabeunido.com/noticia7.php Hopefully a big* crowd comes out for what would be the biggest game in their history (unless they go farther, of course). * big by Panama standards, so 7-10k in attendance would be great.
You're seriously going to make me look through the history books to back my claim? It's not like I'm a broadcaster or anything. But while I'm at it, check out this gem from the 1963 tournament (from CONCACAF's pdf archive http://www.concacafmain.premiumtv.co.uk/staticFiles/f9/3a/0,,12813~146169,00.pdf ): First round, home-away series: Wait, so that means that way back when, a US-based team did win in Mexico! For what it's worth, of course... OK, and for Arabe: in fact, they were the first (and only) team ever from Panama to play in a CONCACAF club tournament before this new Champions League - in 2003, and they got knocked out by the Columbus Crew in the first round (2-1 win at home followed by a 0-3 loss in Columbus). So not only have they never made it past the quarterfinals, but they are also the first ever team from Panama to even play at this level. History in the making...
You would think Tuca would want to win this tournament, considering his team is in the gutter right now. But it wouldn't surprise me if he plays a bunch of kids again.
but by the time the CCL quarterfinals kick off he could have pumas back near the top of the table in the FMF
besides its not like it matters what Pumas does; come crunch time Toluca is going to lay the smackdown, win their 3rd Concacaf title, and go to the Club World Cup
I hate that it's going to take forever to get these games started. I guess we'll have to wait until March.
You guys drew the toughest team. Cruz Azul is playing very well right now and Emanuel Villa is a beast.
Yeah, I know man.. but I have faith.. that the team will sign some good players to strengthen the bench.. and practice practice practice these next months.. let's go arabe..
it will be almost impossible for a mexican team to be knocked out...unless pumas plays with their U-20 team. Cruz Azul has a great team now... Toluca...I dont even have to touch on it Pachuca..Will be better off next season with new players coming in Pumas..the only if, if they play with their first team it wont be a problem.
