The Women's Final is set between Maria Sharapova [IMG] and Ana Ivanovic [IMG] for this Friday at 6:30pm PT / 9:30pm ET on ESPN2/ESPN2-HD.

Who will win this Final... and why?

Who care's about the women, it's all about the men :p. I'm so happy that Nadal got completely and utterly destroyed and humiliated by Tsonga (who is he? :D). I hope Federer beats Djokovic though. I could honestly care less about what happens on the women's side. However, i'm surprised Henin couldn't make it past the quarter's.

Somehow, Sunday's match between Novak Đoković and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga doesn't quite excite me as much today's match between Maria Sharapova [IMG] and Ana Ivanovic [IMG] does, but I'll likely watch both matches nonetheless.

I can't stand watching women's tennis. Only 2 freaking sets to win ? Plus they aren't nearly as good as the men.

Those 2 getting to the finals was unpredictable.

I was talking about Djokovic beating Tsonga as predictable. There are still 3 grand slams left (this year) and Federer will get his revenge and his record in due time.

I'm pretty sure the women are bringing in equal advertising and fans to the event, i.e. equal money.

Glad to see Sharapova make a comeback. Good for competition as well as Djokovic beating Federer. Have to admit, I was rooting for Tsonga, though. What a run for that guy. Q

I can almost guarantee you that the men's matches get more viewership than the women. Why should the women get equal money if they only have to play best of 3 while the men have to play best of 5? That's actually a pretty big difference.

There is a truely physical reason for that. If women played the same as men, there would be more hip, knee, and ankle injuries simply due to the way a womans body is built. There was a study a few year back, about the time the WNBA started, that showed a significant (like 5 fold) increase in knee ligament injuries to girls/women under the age of 23 (I think that was the age) due mainly to basketball and soccer. I think the study looked at a 10 or 15 year time period. The conclusion was the increase was due to more females participating in sports that their bodies were not necessarily designed for.

Now, I know that tennis was not included in that study, and there are probably studies about womens tennis and injuries, but largely, due to bone structure of a woman (remember, women are designed to have kids), sports puts stresses on their lower bodies that they were not necessarily designed for.

physical reason or not, its the men who spend more time on the court to win the big prize

its not equal playing time so it shoudnt be equal pay

I don't know about that. You may be right, but again, you may not. Women's tennis has always been very popular among male viewers. I'm not going to see any real improvement in my game from watching it on TV, so I'll choose to watch the attractive players. That means women.

    Agreed.

I've always wondered why the women complain about the pay difference when they know good and well that they don't play best of five sets.

How much prize money is available should be tied to how much revenue they generate for the tournament- not how many sets they play or how much time they spend on the court.

More people are going to watch Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic in a Grand Slam final, than Sharapova, Ivanovic, or Henin in a final. Men are just that much more skilled (fun to watch). We all know the reason people (specifically men) like the watch the women play :D.

    WTF?

This is athletics, not some fratboy CEO bullshit. To the degree that it's even possible, let's at least try to leave the stupid suits out of it.

You think an MLS player should make 50% more than an NFL player, because a soccer match is 90 minutes while a football game is only 60 minutes? You think Tiger Woods should get paid less money than other golfers, because he doesn't play in as many tournaments? Professional sports is a business- the players get paid more when the business makes more money.

What kills your argument is the fact that we are talking about THE SAME SPORT here.

So all WNBA players need to do to deserve being paid more than NBA players is lengthen their games to last 50 minutes?

Then, NBA players would have absolutely no grounds to complain about not being paid the same as their female counterparts, despite having bigger TV contracts and having bigger crowds, because they have 2 minutes less court time.

If you relate this all back to tennis (as we should) you see that the men have the bigger contracts and the larger share of interest from viewers (not to mention the skill :D).
