Don´t think he was given a fair chance, the tactics never suited him when Mowbray played because he relied on the wings too much (from the few games i saw, can´t say with 100% certainty), and when he played, maybe he wasn´t the best but he definately wasn´t the worst on the pitch. Same can be said for Ki, both him and ZZ are central players and a team that relies on wingers, is a team they´ll probably never shine for.

Can´t give my opinion on Neil Lennons tactics cuz i never catched any of his games, but if he´s a manager that build his team around the central midfield and a playmaker i think both ZZ and Ki has a good chance to showcase their talents next year, that´s if ZZ stays of course.

ZZ would probably fit better with a middle or lower table EPL team at this point. Too bad it seems unlikely that he will get enough actual minutes at Celtic to garner the attention of potential scouts.

    i translated this myself.

beijing time may 20th, liaoning hongyun football club and english premier league football club birmingham opened a joint-news conference, announcing the two teams as strategic partner. according to the conference, the two teams will conduct player exchange, youth development, market expansion, and etc.

the first step for the two teams is birmingham will play a friendly charity match in shenyang stadium at july 24th to help the recent earthquake tragedy. according to the officials, they will donate all ticket income for the people suffered from the earthquake. at the same time, both clubs will have scheduled matches and player exchanges. birmingham will send experienced youth couch to liaoning to open training facility, and liaoning football club will have the opportunities to send youth players to england for development.

the most exciting news is, under boss carson yeung's wish, birmingham will purchase a liaoning player during the transfer window. the reports asked for clarification of whether the player is actually playing within the liaoning football club, birmingham remained silent and stress it is not suitable for them to announce the name.

however, according to cctv host liu jianhong, the player named should not be captain yu hanchao and forward yang xu. birmingham is rather focus on players that have proven themselves in european grounds. it appears that celtic's zheng zhi is the apparent target.

when zheng zhi was plying his trade in charlton, carson yeung already express his interest. when carson yeung failed to bring zheng zhi, he tried to invite shao jiayi to come for a trail, yet, because of work permit problem, shao jiayi failed to come. since zheng zhi has english football experience and his contract is almost expiring, it would be wise in economical and stable sense to bring him to birmingham. please do not forget, zheng zhi is from liaoning so this will meet the needs of both parties.

Is ZZ the only Chinese player right now who would be eligible for a work permit in England since he plays in the SPL?

It doesn't seem like there would be any point for B'ham to sign a Liaoning player right now with our ranking being so low.

yeah its a little of both...he wasn't best utilized in the Mowbray's system and didn't really shine when he got his chance, which was limited anyway, aside from the first n last games .....didn't help that he was always in n out of the
    starting lineup

plus the team really fluctuated alot with no set starting lineup, and a really suspect defence....mcgeady is a talented player but he tends to do too much on his own.... when i was watching them, i kept hoping for more one touch, pass and move intelligent football from central midfield...sighhh

    thanks, that's interesting...

whats birmingham's playing style like? the physical, grind-it-out kind typical of mid table epl teams?

B'ham was a defensive rock for the most part this EPL season. However, I don't know what their success will be like next season with the exit of Joe Hart back to Man SHITeh, and the addition of Ben Foster as a replacement.

Foster hasn't exactly been the most solid GK during his brief appearances for United.

i have a feeling ZZ's real problem besides being inconsistent is that he isn't a specialist at anything, more like jack of all trade and master of none

Since other than Hao (well, ZZ too, though he's probably headed back to China), the majority of these updates are about leagues that nobody cares about, why not start one for Gao Leilei, who was so sick of corruption in Chinese soccer he'd go anywhere in the world to ply his trade, currently doing so in the USSF for the Minnesota Stars.

One man's corruption is another's enterprise. I don't know why Gao Leilei needs moral high grounds to go abroad. Aren't there reasons enough already otherwise?

He did get to play the last two games of the season and score that magical goal.

Free transfer to Birmingham. It's written in the oracle bones.

    do you blame him?

I think you're right, Zheng's going to Birmingham, but he won't get much playing time there, it will be more Yeung's attempt to introduce mainland fans to the fact there's a team called Birmingham City (and sell some of those new X-tep shirts) instead of for him as a player. He should be more realistic and head back to the Championship if he really wants to play week in, week out.

i don't blame lennon. i guess zz hasn't impressed consistently in training or matches to justify keeping him.

yaw seem to think Birmingham City is a done deal. has McLeish even listed him as a possible signing or expressed an interest?

I don't know what X thinks, but it makes a ton of sense to me. I doubt McLeish has or ever would list him as a possible signing, this is entirely Yeung inspired. Yeung wants to sign Chinese players and Zheng is arguably the best one out there now (at least the best one out there who can get a work permit). While HKers have fallen in love with Birmingham, the reality is that the squad hasn't made a dent in gaining mainland fans. They don't care that an HK person owns the side and they don't care about anything other than a winner (or a team with a Chinese player). As I said, the Zheng signing isn't so much to make him a critical part of the team, its to sell mainland jerseys (which may be possible since X-tep will have them on sale all over the country). Plus, the team's China tour has been selling horribly, having Zheng will definitely boost sales, especially for the match in his hometown.
