Did Robin Gayle redshirt or is she going to try to play the 2nd half of the season after the WWC? I suppose I could try to search and find the answer myself but I know someone in TarHeel nation can help a sista out.

    Robyn Gayle

The plans are for her to return to the team after the WWC, mid-season.

    Re: Robyn Gayle

Thank you for the info. I can't decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. I've held mixed feelings since the beginning of the WWC. I remember that Mia redshirted and Lilly didn't back in the day (or was it the other way around...no, pretty sure Lilly played that year)*. I'm just not sure if it is fair to the player and team for them to miss such a big chunk and then try to reintegrate. I know it can really hurt a team to miss a nat'l team level talent for the entire year (and players almost always want to play). But what about recovery time? Each to their own, I guess.

*ok, just did a quick check of tarheelblue and it seems Mia did not play for UNC in '91. Lilly was player of the year in '91. Yea! My memory isn't completely shot....

    Re: Robyn Gayle

At worst, she's back early Oct. depending how far Canada goes. That is still early in the ACC season.
hey, the most important time is the ACC & NCAA tournaments!

I know other players have joined their college teams late and the player & team have had success. I just don't think one size fits all and redshirting might benefit some players. I mentioned the two different approaches to the '91 college season/ '91 cup in large part b/c both options can work out well.

I know that nat'l team caliber players are always needed by their schools. In this particular club vs country debate, since a player generally has the option to redshirt (and therefore seeminlgly loose little unlike say a men's prof player taking a salary hit by taking a year off) it might make some sense. I do think that there is a negative impact for player and team when they bounce between nat'l team and college team.

I can see the possibility of a team getting use to a couple of slip ups/sloppy play here and there and thinking "well, when she gets back then that will fix itself and we can just turn it on." Doesn't always work like that. How many times have you seen a team that has not played from behind and/or isn't use to getting outplayed not know how to do that when it finally happens to them. I know that the end of season tournaments are important but I am old fashioned and believe the regular season is important, too.

How many of you think we would have won the nat'l championship if O'Reilly had not taken time away from the nats. Be honest. Personally, I don't think we would have. Sure, she would have been around for the ACC & NCAA tournies but that team needed the entire season together to build the familiarity, confidence, and determination needed. And they needed O'Reilly's sr. leadership. Granted it wasn't a WWC year.

Maybe UNC is super thin at Robyn's position and a redshirt would be very detrimental to NCAA hopes. I'm not so sure.

All of this is theoretical and not specific to this case, of course. This particular version of club vs county debate has some interesting permeations. Perhaps this might be better as a thread of its own.

Robyn is not going to be gone all that long. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Canada got past the quarterfinals, and those are played on Sept 23rd.

    UNC v South Carolina

Great live feed of the game on ACC Select...even if you don't see it live, can view game later, which is nice.

Givan gets hammered in the face and leaves the field - should be all right. A couple of good shot opps so far, but definitely a young team trying to get organized.

But 20 minutes in, South Carolina just scored first goal! YIKES.
