    '09 Recruit: Kim Castleberry

    from studentsportssoccer.com:
"Another of the several youth national team members attending this year's NP50, (Kim) Castleberry helped the Texans to a 28-3-2 record this past summer. Although only a rising junior, Castleberry committed to the University of North Carolina. In addition to her soccer success, Castleberry earned all-state honors in track. Her track personal bests are an 11.7 100, 24.7 200 and a 54.5 400."

The same site mentions that Teresa Noyola (player database search) is neither considering UNC nor Notre Dame (ref: earlier posts on this thread). Santa Clara, Portland, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton and Yale are among some of her picks.

    Potential Recruit: Brittani Bartok?

Saw that Brittani Bartok had listed UNC as her college choice on last year's Nike Premier 50 site. Can anyone confirm that this Union, NJ player (PDA World Class) is coming to Chapel Hill?

Pretty strange that she won't consider those 2 top womens soccer programs.

When you look at the schools that she is considering, it's not all that surprising:
So it's West Coast (closer to home) or Ivy League . . . looks like a good list to me. A lot of things go into a college decision; soccer is one of them. Of course, you and I might think she's crazy for not wanting to spend four years in heaven ;) , but she really can't go wrong with any of those choices. :)

People think all the top recruits go to UNC. Most of the top recruits go to UCLA. Yet they have 0 titles to UNC 18.

so if UCLA does get all the top recruits as you say they do then it comes down to one thing! ELLIS can't get it done! Not the BIG one that is! :(

Do you suppose having Ellis at the reins for the national u20 program increases the lure for prospective players to commit to her at UCLA?

Yes I talked to a Coach a few weeks ago that said shes off to UNC for 08. Have you seen her play? I saw her in LA last year vs Germany.
good speed and super touch and smart with the ball.

the problem is that UCLA gets like the #1, #2 recruit-- then can't support that player with the rest of the team.

I haven't seen her play--only read about her. That's exciting news though. I thought she was an '09'er though. Read somewhere that UNC can only recruit 4 out-of-staters each year (balanced with 4 in-staters), so I think Bartok (NJ) makes 4, along with Matthias (AL), Jones (CA)and Wood (CA) if she's a 2008.

I once heard a similar comment from a parent- there may be a certain number of admissions Anson can get for players who would not normally be able to get in on their own as its so tough from out of state.

(MuTurk was a Morehead Scholarship from the UK- didn’t come for soccer)

Gosh, you're right, what I wrote made no sense and now I'm completely lost about where I read that information and how it may have pertained to scholarships. I'm having trouble locating it now, so I can't back it up. At any rate, you're right--we pulled in a boatload of out-of-state talent last year!

On a slightly different note, I noticed that Jessica McDonald has managed to do very well for herself out of the junior college circuit - scoring 2 goals thus far on the u-20 Pan American squad! Congrats to her!

My daughter was impressed with her. Said she has go technical ability and thinks on here feet. UNC could sell their recruiting program technique and make some $$. :)

They're also soft. UCLA just can't take physical play, which UNC has proven each and every time they've beaten them. It's hilarious they've never figured that out yet.

that's true. but... interesting. UCLA sounds like my HS team, we were ranked by the KHSAA this year and last year pre-season... and were used to wipe the field every time we played Marshall. we tied them my junior year... what happened? lol

    Re: Potential Recruit: Brittani Bartok?

After reading last week about some of the top 08-09 players I made it a point to see a few at the nationals.
I saw bartok and brooks play with world-class u18.
bartok sent a 35 yard ball cross field with the outside of her left foot bent over the defense to the feet of her target player on the run. She can make big plays and also seems to be a handful 1 v 1. The bar keeps getting higher all the time and the talent seems to get better and younger every year . brooks another top pick and a true u17 just back from nike will be a top pick in 09. Any word on and schools for her?

    Re: Potential Recruit: Brittani Bartok?

Thanks for the update on Bartok...reminds me of watching Mia Hamm train with the US WNT several years back on Finley Field, Chapel Hill. Dorrance would have her crossing from around the midfield mark, serving those bending balls in over the defense for a target player up top....

Amber Brooks is listed on the studentsportssoccer.com dbase as a 5-star level recruit pursuing the following list of schools: Boston College, Florida State, North Carolina, Penn State, Stanford, Virginia, Santa Clara, and Princeton. She hails from New Hope, PA...

    Interview with Anson

Tarheelblue.com now has an MP3 interview with Anson, conducted by UNC Assoc. Athletic Director Dave Lohse. Really good stuff about the pre-season....

He sound's concerned with who's going to step up the scoring load with Heather being gone. Interesting. Wonder who will start up front with Casey & Washington. Also agree with Long being huge pick up after losing Hawkin's.

    Re: Potential Recruit: Brittani Bartok?

It might have to do with $$$ -- maybe they can only *afford* a certain # of out-of-state recruits, since tuition for out-of-state students is considerably higher than for in-state. (My understanding is that Anson doesn't give full scholarships to anybody, but spreads around the money available.)

Does anyone reading this thread know when the Heels hold practice? I have a friend who wants to try to go watch sometime and asked if I could find out for her. Seems like everything I've read says they are open to whoever wants to come -- but how do you find out when / where (i.e. Finley vs. Fetzer)?

Probably you could just call Delaine Mabry at the soccer office and she could tell you. The contact info is on the tarheelblue.com site.

they recently changed the out of state tuition policy at carolina to the end that if an out of state student receives a scholarship that student is considered in state for tuition purposes. i am not exactly sure if this applies to partial scholarships or just full scholarships, but it is about the only thing the BOG has done concerning out of staters that isn't abusive and insulting

Other than ND and Texas A&M, the Heels' non-conference schedule looks weaker than I remember it being in past years. I know the ACC is tough and the extra conference games (curse you, expansion) eat into scheduling. Am I off base in thinking the non-conf schedule is fluffier than expected?

Also, does anyone have info on tv or online streaming of games? I'm no longer in CH but I'd still like to catch some games, if I can.
