Thanks for the post, fellow Canadian. So many matches have been postponed because of the war and SARS.
Yeah with the frigid weather we had (although it's easening up now), all kinds of war protests and SARS going on, it's been really stressful in Toronto lately... well, I can only hope for the Leafs to do well and finally give us Torontonians something to cheer about! Anyways, back on topic, good luck to Hong Kong and Taiwan as the tournament resumes... I'd love to see Hong Kong to come and face Korea in the second round!
hey fellow Torontonian. Yeah it freaked me out when it was snowing like crazy last week. It's April for christ's sake. But today's been REAALL nice and over the weekend it's gonna be warm as well. I'm planning to play some OUTDOOR soccer tomorrow, if we get enough guys together. Not really a big hockey fan, although I was about 10, 15 years ago when the Flames were good. Since the Raps have sucked big time, let's hope the Leafs can win something for us. HK will beat SRi Lanka without much problem. But Korea will probably kick their asses without much problem, if HK is to face SK in the 2nd round. btw, how many teams will qualify to the Olympics from Asia? I suppose it's the 3 group winners?
Interesting little story out of Nepal from the first game... A few of the best Nepali players were not allowed to play because they didn't have documents proving that they were underage (an hour before the game). According to the a Nepali fan site, this is nothing new from the ANFA. The ANFA claimed that the players were injured, but it is common knowledge that they players were probably overage. The fan site also states that this is not the first time that the ANFA has tried to field overage players. The second leg of Nepal-Palestine will be played on April 15th and not April 14th (in Nepal). The second leg will be considered an away game for Nepal and thus Palestine scored a crucial away goal in the first game. http://www.nepalnews.com.np/contents/englishdaily/ktmpost/2003/apr/apr13/sports.htm#1
Palestine 2 Nepal 1 (Palestine advances 3-1 on agg) Palestine will now play Kuwait in the next round.
Cant wait for this game, its very special if we can kick out the Kuwaities out of this Qualification.
April 16th (1st leg) Syria 2 Pakistan 0 The second leg will be played on April 19th (also in Damascus).
More postponed games because of SARS "The other four matches which were supposed to be played on May 3 and June 7 are: Saudi Arabia v winner of Taiwan/Singapore; North Korea v winner of Iraq/Vietnam; Thailand v winner of UAE/Tajikistan; China v winner of Syria/Pakistan." http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-postponed&prov=reuters&type=lgns
According to rsssf, the AFC Vietnam has advanced (by a walkover) against Iraq. Although, I haven't been able to find any confirmation....
1st leg April 19th UAE 3 Tajikstan 0 (Faisal Khalil 50, Rami Yaslem 56, Salah Abbas 85) 2nd leg India 1 Turkmenistan 0 (Turkmenistan advances 2-1 on agg)
Some other scores from April 19th... 2nd leg Jordan 1 Lebanon 1 (Lebanon advances on the away goal rule) Pakistan 1 Syria 6 (played in Damascus) (Syria advances 8-1) Here are some articles about the games played this weekend. Turkmenistan at India "The goal predictably sparked an Indian onslaught but Turkmenistan held on, visiting coach Muhadov Rovshan delighted to have escaped both the India challenge as well as the unfamiliar humid conditions at the end of the game." http://www.asian-football.com/mrel/news_53579_E.html Tajikstan at UAE "Despite the result, Tajikistan coach Boir Igamberdiev believes his side still have a chance of making the second round when the return leg goes to the former USSR state next week." http://www.asian-football.com/mrel/news_53580_E.html
Palestine is now ranked 147th. The victors of Vaduz will probably surpass them for next month after that win over Saudi Arabia. Anyway, this is quite a feat to win any match. However, even with a younger squad Kuwait will probably crush them. Here's some of what the Post said about the second leg against Nepal: " Palestine entered the second round of the 2004 Olympics’ Asian-zone Qualifiers after they beat Nepal 2-1 in an ill-tempered second-leg battle held at the Dashrath Stadium on Monday. The aggregate score of 3-1 earned them a meeting with Kuwait next month. Match referee Alghafary Naser of Jordan showed a total of 12 cards including one red card to Nepali striker Jibesh Pandey in the match. The match was halted for four minutes after players from both the sides were engaged in a physical brawl prompting referee Naser to issue marching order to Pandey in the 73rd minute. Six Palestine players were booked while five Nepali players were cautioned in the match. "
Lebanon wanted the games vs Indonesia to be postponed because of SARS, but the AFC decided that the games could go ahead as scheduled.
April 19th Bangladesh 0 Myanmar 0 (Myanmar advances 3-0 on agg) April 26th Uzbekistan 0 UAE 1 (UAE advances 4-0 on agg) The games that were cancelled because of SARS have been rescheduled. 1st leg - September 10 - Singapore at Taiwan 2nd leg - September 17 - Taiwan at Singapore 1st leg - September 10 - Sri Lanka at Hong Kong 2nd leg - September 17 - Hong Kong at Sri Lanka The games in the second round which involve countries affected by SARS have been bumped back to October. 2nd round -- 1st leg Japan 3 Myanmar 0
I would love to know the ruling that allowed for Vietnam to get a walkover against Iraq. Not even a simple 2-0 forfeit.
Probably the rule that their country no longer exists! It's essentially a state without a government right now, recognized by virtually no other nation in the world. Besides, football is definitely the least of their worries right now.
That's what I thought but the majority of the world's countries probably won't recognize a government from there for about two years or so.
2nd round 1st leg Malaysia 3 Turkmenistan 0 (w/o) - Turkmenistan refused to travel to Malaysia because of SARS. The second leg should be played on June 7th. Bahrain 1 Kyrgyzstan 0
Iraq Vs. Vietnam Actually the AFC just posted the match schedule for Iraq Vs. Vietnam on their web site.... 1st Leg is on 09-10-03 and it will b in the Al-Abbasiyin Std, Damascus.
