Re: Concacaf Player of the Year 2004

1.- J. Lozano (right now top goal scorer along with Borgetti in WCQ, won two titles in a row with Pumas)
2.- Marquez (has assured a starting position in Barca and has been fundamental in their success both in La Liga and Champions League.)
3.- C. Ruiz (key in Guatemalas success in getting into the HEX)
4.- Fonseca (won two titles in a row with Pumas and has proven to be Mexicos most consistent and best forward)
5.- Beasley (signed with PSV and doing a great job. Also playing in Champions League.)

Wanchope wasn't included because he doesn't even start for Malaga.

Re: Concacaf Player of the Year 2004

    Marquez hands down.

Beasley has only had a few games in PSV during 2004. Otherwise, he's had some good games against weak competition in CONCACAF. Actually we could say that about just everyone else.

So Marquez because he's been a pillar in what was probably the best club in the world for a good part of 2004.

Only a "few" games at PSV? That's news to me, last time I checked he played at least 25 games at PSV including CL, scoring 8 goals with lots of assists and fouls drawn. He's a very important part of PSV team that's in the knock-out stages of champions league. Marquez concacaf player of the year....yes probably, hands down? Hell no!

Re: Concacaf Player of the Year 2004

Why doesn't this award actually exist? Anyone know?

I don't know enough about non-Americans or non-MLS guys to vote. (I don't know, for example, who the best domestic Mexican player was in 2004).

My top 5 Americans would be:

    1. Beasley
    2. Donovan
    3. Steve Cherundolo
    4. Joe Cannon
    5. Carlos Bocanegra

It seems like every other Confederation has some type of award like this except for CONCACAF, I agree it needs to exist. Should be on club (no matter where you play) and country play.

Re: Concacaf Player of the Year 2004

    1. DeMarcus Beasley- deserved US player of the year, great performer for club and country in 2004.

    2. Jamie Lozano - won two championships, and has been a monster for Mexico

    3. Landon Donovan- clearly the best player for the region but 2004 was not one of his best despite captianing the US.

    4. Rafa Marquez - great player but playing for Barca shouldn't mean you get the award, the guys above him contributed more.

    5. Carlos Ruiz- great international record in 2004, injuered and somewhat unproductive for his standards for LA.

Honorable mention: Armado Guevara - had his country made it to the HEX perhaps he would have gotten more consideration.

Re: Concacaf Player of the Year 2004

Honest question, not trolling: What has Donovon done this year that Marquez hasn't in the past year? What put him over Marquez in your opinion, cause he didn't win a championship and as you said he didn't have his best year. I don't think that just saying that he was named the top american player is enough because you could say the same about Marquez and so they cancel themselves out there.

Re: Concacaf Player of the Year 2004

To be honest I feel they are pretty much on par with each other for 2004 as players from CONCACAF, only reasons I gave a slight edge to Donovan at#3 over Rafa was beacuse:

    1. Donovan became captian of the US in 2004 and has helped lead the US to their best ever record over 365 days.

    2. I am American so when a comparision is a push I tend to tip towards the American player..

In fairness you could say my ranking for #3 is a tie between the two.

Wow, so many votes cast and nary a single 5th place even to Paul Stalteri. I guess being an every day starter on the Budesliga champs, playing in the last 16 of the Champs league and being voted by fans to the Bundesliga foreign players all star team does mean much these days.

    So, here are my votes:

    1. Marquez
    T2. Stalteri
    T2. Ruiz
    4. Guevara
    5. Donovan

Wachope would have made this list except he did not play that much for his club sides (but 6 goals in 13 games for Man City is pretty worthy). I don't place a lot of value on how well national teams do, since a lot of that is outside the control of any one player's hands.

I think it's tough to make comparisons between two players who play different positions.

In the end, everybody is just stating opinions.
