NEW YORK (Thursday, June 17, 2004) - Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber announced today that the ninth annual Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game will feature All-Stars from the Eastern Conference and Western Conference facing off at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. ET, in a live national television broadcast on ABC Sports. In conjunction with the East vs. West contest at RFK Stadium, Major League Soccer will present an MLS reunion match featuring players who competed in the 1994 World Cup in the 10th anniversary of the historic tournament. Additionally, Commissioner Garber confirmed that the League has accepted an invitation from Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid to send a team of MLS All-Stars to compete against the "Galacticos" on Tuesday, September 21 in Madrid, Spain, as part of the 26th annual Santiago Bernabeu Trophy. First held in 1979 in honor of the club's legendary former president for whom the team's stadium is also named, the trophy is contested in what has traditionally become the final international match played by Real Madrid prior to the start of the team's domestic season. As the first-ever American team to play in the historic Bernabeu, the MLS All-Stars join elite company such as A.C. Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Inter Milan, Liverpool, River Plate and Santos, who are among the legendary teams to have competed in the prestigious event's history. "We are looking forward to the first true celebration of Major League Soccer's past, present and future stars on July 31 at the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "At the same time we are also pleased to secure another high-profile international match for the MLS All-Stars in what is sure to be a unique and memorable event in the League's history when the team faces Real Madrid in Spain on September 21. The Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game on July 31 will bring together the top stars of the sport in America as MLS' two conferences go head-to-head for the first time since 2001. Online fan balloting via the League's official web site (www.MLSnet.com) will close on July 5 with All-Star Starters unveiled on July 6 and All-Star Reserves named three days later. Prior to the East vs. West contest, MLS will honor its tradition, history and pioneers by hosting an MLS Reunion Match, which will feature players who participated in the 1994 World Cup and then went on to play in MLS. The celebration game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. ET, with two 25-minute halves divided by a 10-minute halftime, in a U.S. vs. the World format that has been used in previous all-star matches. Invitations have been accepted by such MLS legends as Marcelo Balboa, Mike Burns, Paul Caligiuri, Jorge Campos, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Fernando Clavijo, Thomas Dooley, Marco Etcheverry, Richard Gough, John Harkes, Carlos Hermosillo, Frank Klopas, Alexi Lalas, Peter Nowak, Carlos Valderrama, Eric Wynalda and Frank Yallop. The MLS-USA team will be coached by current Honduras technical director Bora Milutinovic, the only manager in FIFA World Cup history to have guided five different nations in the World Cup finals (Mexico - '86; Costa Rica - '90; USA - '94; Nigeria - '98; China - '02). As the Guiness guys would say, "Sending your best players across the pond for a meaningless exhibition during the playoff run and the day before the Open Cup final...brilliant!" As if the All-Star game weren't bad enough mid-season, now we know that 22, not 11 players will start and even more will get the chance of getting injured in July. I must say that the 94 WC reunion sounds like fun though. Sorry for being lazy in my reading, but did it say anywhere if that would be televised?
the live telecast for the game starts at 2 and the "reunion game" is being played at 12:30, so I don't think it will be televised.... maybe fox sports world would air it, but i'm not sure.
Well, Fox Sports World televised the Cienfuegos testimonial match last week on a tape-delayed basis (several days later). I would not be surprised to see FSW do the same with the MLS OldTimer's All-star Match.
We should be all set. No one on the Revs has a valid claim to be an "All-Star" at least so far this season. Cancela would probably get the call as our token representitive.

My biggest problem was I held off getting Manu tickets for Giants stadium, since I woul rather watch Real in my backyard Now I've been screwed on both sides - No Real, and no good Manu tix left.
Realizing that, over the years, he has selected bad head coaches, constantly diluted the off field quality of the game-day experience and otherwise stressed, tweaked and/or just plain pi**ed off his most loyal fan base. Kraft is going to be offering free tickets, transportation, food and lodging for the Bernabeu match to his season ticket holders just to honor his commitment to the final special game. Everyone will be meeting in the Gillette parking lot on Sept. 19th where the Krafts will drive everyone to the aiport in luxury coaches. We can all leave our car in the lot while we're off to Spain to enjoy the game. Parking is just $1500 ($1300 for anyone who bought the parking pass)
The headline over a Gus Martins article last week mentioned the "P-word." I thought it was odd to even sugges that the Revs still have a shot at the playoffs, even though their current position doesn't look too good. Usually we don't even see this come up until at least close enough to the end of the season when it's clear that some teams will not make the playoffs. At this point, we're only 1/3 of the way through, and given how in the last 2 seasons, the Revs have made runs at just about the last possible moment, they aren't out of it until the fat lady sings. She isn't even warming up her throat. And I hope none of the Revs are invited to play in Spain. I suppose it was a nice gesture by Real Madrid, since their own collapse cost us what would have been a nice event, and at least they seem willing to make it up to MLS, but the timing could not be worse. Let them pick a lot of Chicago players, Freddy Adu and a host of "names" and leave us alone.
sorry revs fans about losing out on the madrid match, but the bigger deal here should be yet another lame ass all-star match, boycott east vs west I say. I just saw mls pimping adu on their site for the all-star game, that is totally ridiculous, he most certainly is not one of the leagues best. I've been an ardent mls fan since its inception, but this is too lame for words. they seriously couldn't have found another quality team for us to play against? mls, you suck!
