I noticed an item on Bregenz' web site which outlined their upcoming schedule and which indicated that the new Bundesliga season would start on July 14th. I was a little surprised things would start so early since there is no major international competition next summer that they would need to end by. [I think they started at the end of July this past year.]

However, perhaps there were problems with the degree to which this past year's schedule was condensed or perhaps the winter break was not long enough for the playing conditions in some places.

I would presume also that this would mean a likely beginning of the Erste Liga on the preceding day, July 13th.

In team news, the article noted that discussions for a contract extension are underway for Norwegian MF Jan Ove Pedersen and Hungarian striker Laszlo Klausz (both players' deals expire at the end of June). However, Norwegian defender Bjørn Otto Bragstad will not be back next season.

Updating my thread above......Pedersen signed a one-year contract extension with the club so he will be with Bregenz until Summer 2005. A note on the web site today indicates that Klausz recently returned from his vacation but the two sides remain apart on financial terms for a new deal.

First round games of the just completed season:
    16/07/03 GAK 1-0 Admira
    16/07/03 Kärnten 2-1 Austria
    16/07/03 Rapid 4-2 Pasching
    17/07/03 Bregenz 1-0 Salzburg
    26/07/03 Mattersburg 3-1 Sturm

So 14 July sounds reasonable - 52 weeks later.

You are correct, IASocFan. My bad. I don't know why I recalled thinking that they had started at the end of July this season.

Well, less than 6 weeks to go!

    Re: 2004/05 Austrian Bundesliga

I just checked the www.bundesliga.at web site, and although the individual fixtures are not listed, they appear to have the dates blocked out for each round. This is what I noted:

    T-Mobile Bundesliga

    Round 1 July 14, 2004
    Round 21 December 8, 2004
    (winter break)
    Round 22 February 19, 2005
    Round 36 May 26, 2005

    Red Zac Erste Liga

    Round 1 July 20, 2004
    Round 21 December 3, 2004
    (winter break)
    Round 22 March 4, 2005
    Round 36 May 26, 2005

Super Cup - GAK versus Austria Wien Saturday July 10, 2004

And my above post is incorrect – there are less than 7 weeks to go

Perhaps a moderator can add an [R] to the title of this thread...

GAK won both the Bundesliga title and Austrian Cup last season, with Austria Wien finishing second in both events. Today's SuperCup was Austria Wien's first chance for revenge, and they succeeded, albeit narrowly.

GAK 1 -1 Austria Wien [2-4 on PKs]

Kollmann scored an early goal for the Graz side 9 minutes into the first half, but his teammate Pogatetz put one in his own net for the Vienna side 9 minutes into the second half. It ended up going to penalty kicks, and Austria Wien earned the sixth SuperCup in their history.

Looking forward to the season starting middle of next week!

FC Superfund was SV Pasching before selling out to corporate naming a couple years ago. Pasching is a small town with population 6,100 near Linz in the province Upper Austria. Their stadium holds more than that.

If you think that's wrong, until recently there was a team in Austria's second division called SC InterWetten.com, named after an online sports betting outfit. Their sponsor just abandoned the team, and they're back to their old name SC Untersiebenbrunn.

It was a week for the home sides. Austria Wien was the only away team to earn a point. Rapid Wien earned their second big win in as many matches, this time against the newly-promoted upstart Wacker Tirol. Defending champs GAK reversed their first-round loss with a win over Salzburg.

    Round 2 Results:

    Pasching 3 - 0 Sturm Graz
    Admira Wacker 3 - 0 Bregenz
    GAK 1 - 0 Salzburg
    Mattersburg 0 - 0 Austria Wien
    Rapid Wien 4 - 1 Wacker Tirol
