2003 World Peace King Cup - Teams and Schedule

Draw was made today. 8 participating teams from 5 continents were drawn into 2 groups of 4 teams.
The winners of the tournament will take home a top prize of $2 million, while the runners-up will have $500,000. The event will be held July 15-23.

Despite SARS outbreak in Asian region, The Peace King Cup Organization Committee (PKCOC) said in a press conference today that the event will go ahead as planned.

So, What do you guys think Seongnam's chances are of qualifying for the second stage? I think it would be really nice if Seongnam just doesn't get humiliated by Lyon and Bayer.

    Seongnam Ilhwa (Korea Rep.)

    Bayer 04 Lever kusen (Germany)

    Olympique Lyonnais (France)

    Kaizer Chiefs (S.Africa)

    Group B

    A.S. Roma (Italy)

    PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands)

    LA Galaxy (U.S.A)

    Sao Paulo (Brazil)

I suppose it depends on just how seriously the European clubs take a competition that's in the middle of their off-season. If it ends up like the World Club Championship, their chances might not be too bad.

Leverkusen certainly has other things to worry about and an exodus could be in the works if they go down to the 2. Bundesliga. If Seongnam can get a result against Lyon, their advancing wouldn't be out of the question.

While I don't regret the group Galaxy got placed into (what a great chance to prove MLS), I bet Bo is sorry he can't measure his new team against a team he has played against.

I really really really hope that at least the Galaxy games get televised over here. But I expect I have a better chance of seeing Lake Michigan freeze over in July than getting any of these games over here.

Isn't the prize for this tournament significant enough where these clubs want to play their best players? Also, what is the deal with SARS and this tournament. I thought PSV was going to pull out because of this. Although, there really haven't been any cases of SARS in Korea, you know how people get paranoid, just because Korea happens to be in Asia *cough*PORTUGAL!*cough*

Don't know how the SARS thing will work itself out. I haven't heard of any cases in Korea (but I'm not listening too hard). As for the money, I think the winning team gets $2 million. For an MLS team that's more than the entire roster. For any team outside the G-14, that's at least a transfer fee for most players.

the winning prize was big enough to make the Euro teams come over to Korea. Otherwise they wouldn't even have participated at the first place.

Can you list the times the matches are going to be played in Seoul? Or a place where I can find them?

And how can you purchase tickets?

I think after the Korean team, the Galaxy and PSV will be the second fav team in Korean b/c of the korean base players they have.

This is the dumbest name for a tournament. They should have just said World Peace Cup or something. Or the Jesus Cup, if WPK is supposed to stand for him.

I have no idea where that "King" part came from, but from what I'm hearing this tournament is going to be played again later in other places and countries. Sort of like World Championship but a lot smaller size. Originally Arsenal was supposed to come too but they were so picky it got cancelled (before SARS outbreak in China).

If you are going to purchase tickets, you can reserve your tickets online or over the phone.

Here's a page where you can buy tickets online.

    http://www.ticketpark.com/Event/Topfraim.asp?Eventseq=PEACEKING

Or you can just dial 1544-1559 if you happen to be in Seoul.

All the matches, including the final match, will kick off at 7 pm local time.

The 'Jesus Cup'? lol... I thought I read that the Moonies put up the cash for this tournament. If that is true... then 'Jesus' has nothing to do with it.

    Cheers....

The name actually sound a heckuvalot better in its original Portuguese. I think that there is likely a play on words. Remember that Pele was called "o roi" or something like that in Brazil, and that is part of the name of this tournament, which he had a big part in making. While the tourney's name strongly suggests the Prince of Peace, a.k.a. Jesus, the lack of putting his name in the title puts the emphasis on peace, and how soccer bridges all borders, religions, etc.
