The golden goal scored by New England Revolution's captain, Joe Franchino, in Sep 28 (vs Columbus) is nominated as one of the five finalists for 2003 Pepsi Goal of the Year. http://www.mlsnet.com/special/mlscup/2003/mlscup1110awards.html
Good catch. I meant to post this when I saw it earlier, but I was busy voting. Joey made the first cut. His golden goal is up against the likes of John Wolyniec's miracle shot, Carlos "The Sushi" Ruiz' bike, and John Spencer. Everybody vote for Joey! Bring a Revs goal back to back!
Harris' Bike If that shot was little lower and didn't the hit cross bar, then.....oh well, it's over any way. They can't reclaim any goals in soccer. But that bike was awesome; it's like the Marcelo's bike in 2000.
I just looked at all the five goals. Um...I just realized, but did Columbus lose two straight games in over time? What a shocker must been when Joey scored. They were up 2-0.
Re: Harris' Bike Yeah, but since it was over the goal line by a foot-and-a-half, it shouldn't have mattered. Just a superb strike. Too bad the officials didn't get a chance to see it. Oh well..
Re: Re: Harris' Bike I know that ball did cross the line. What I meant was if it was little lower, then the ball wouldn't hit the cross bar and it would hit the net. Then there was no way for the officals to disallow that gaol.
Re: Re: 2003 Pepsi Goal of the Year Taylor's goal didn't win Goal of the Year last year -- Ruiz won, with Eklund's coming in 2nd and Twellman in 3rd. Taylor's goal DID win GAS play of the year. This year one of Adin's super saves (actually a double save) is up for GAS play of the year, against that same Ruiz goal that Joey is up against. If I'm not mistaken, you can also vote for the GAS award at Nickolodeon's website.
Nice to see Joey in the running, but I can't seriously imagine he'll win. The Spencer flick, Wolyniec volley and Ralph spin are all more impressive than Joey or Ruiz's goals, it seems to me. But then, I wish that the nominators made more of an effort to get goals in which the whole *play* is impressive, not just the last touch or two.
I wouldn't take the whole award too seriously. The whole thing lost any credibility for me a few years back when Etch won it for chipping a lame keeper (I mean, his leg was literally in a brace) from a few yards over midfield. In most big leagues it would have been a blooper, that year in MLS it was Goal of the Year.
Agreed. Hate NY, but, he one-timed it off a 50+ yard pass, on the run. Unreal. Ralph, sets it up with his right, spins and slams it in with his left. Two great efforts in the run of play.
I watched the game where Wolyniec scored his goal. It was the kind of goal that can change seasons. The Mutts didn't look like winning that game. In OT, this long ball goes sailing down the field and before you know it, Wolyniec volleys it past the keeper. It was the kind of goal you rarely witness....that you want to watch again and again because it's so amazing. I was really worried the Mutts would come together after that and step up their game, but next week, they stunk up the joint and from what I saw never played well again. Dan
