As predicted for months on end, Aly Wagner of Santa Clara will be moving on down the coast to San Diego, whic tabbed her with the first pick. Santa Clara teammate Devvyn Hawkins will be packing her bags for Boston as the Breakers picked her with the draft's third overall pick.

Stanford's Callie Withers will be living the thug life in Atlanta as the Beat used the fifth pick to summon her to the Peach State.

First round is done, but the 'Rays aren't picking until the fourth pick of the second round. Results to come.

I take it you're a Barr fan, then?

She's from Granite Bay, which I had to look up on Yahoo! but found is a suburb of Sacramento. Looks like a marketing push in that direction wouldn't be the worst idea.

What I really like about Betsy is her ability to win balls in the air and distrubute in the air. We lose that otherwise when Tisha retires. Barr is also excellent at winning and distributing balls on the ground. I think she'll be a great compliment to our midfield because she's going to be able to set up Sissi, Tisha, and Pretinha so nicely. She's a hard-working, agressive, very smart player.

So, yeah, I guess you could say I'm a fan. :D I think you will be, too.

Geez, the 'Rays get all the players I want them to, now to just get them to all work together!!! :p

Ruth Montgomery of St. Mary's College will be heading to the Washington Freedom with the 22nd pick.

CyberRays' only other pick is at 28. If you want to see hot-and-heavy draft discussion, try the Charge board.

No trade apparently, at least not to move up to 27th from 28th.

San Jose on the clock ...

I think I'm stressing out about it is what.

We could be trading something bigger, though. Didn't they say Boston wanted names?

I'm not happy about that. At all.

Yes, Borgman will get to play (most likely) in Boston and that is good for her and for Boston. I'm not sure what we gain with Sanchez, however. Maybe someone will fill me in on Keri's finer points?

I just don't like that we traded away someone with a lot of potential and a bright future for someone who's 8 years older and (sorry Keri) arguably not as good (at least in terms of potential, and how long will she play for us? A few more years max?). :(

I'm hoping there are details left to be seen about this trade. Some "future considerations" we haven't heard about (read: cash).

To challenge Quinones for reserve GK.

I'm not sure anyone's bumping Dawn as the backup.

With the next-to-last pick of the draft, Washington selected California forward Laura Schott.

    I didn't know that.

I do know Sarah has played for Seattle Hibernians & Caledonians FC as well as the Seattle Sounders Select women.

I even saw her in downtown Seattle in the building where I used to work.

Keri is a totally reliable, experienced defender. She can start and get the job done. Borgman was more of a project. I like her a lot, but she never quite meshed with Ian last year. She probably will do better with Pia. Also, Keri has expressed her desire to return to the Bay Area. I'm glad we could work it out for her.

Let's face it, Ian didn't have a lot of picks to work with. Mandy Clemens IS better than anyone he could have gotten at the #4 spot. Betsy Barr will replace Carey Dorn or Lisa Nanez as the defensive midfielder. With 2 key backline players recovering from injuries (Kelly Lindsey and Di Alagich), the Rays still have a full complement of starters: Brandi, Frenchie, Keri and Thori, with Barr at d-mid. Not bad at all.

It's the choice of Sarah Peters I find puzzling. Is she really better than Dawn Greathouse and Linnea Quinones? I would have grabbed Cal's Laura Schott, who could have provided much-needed depth up top. Now the Freedom have her.

    That I did not know.

She had a helluva good game (unfortunately) against the Huskies this year. Despite her team being pretty much outplayed, she salvaged a tie with some nice moves.

I don't, however, see her making an impact at this level.

That remains to be seen, but we are certainly fortunate to pick up Barr with our one and only other pick. Soro, we'll have to thank AB, won't we? :p

Borgman, Borgman, Borgman. What did we do that for?

Ok, so I didn't agree with drafting her in the first place...but for Sanchez? Borgman's young, with a lot of potential. If we weren't going to keep her for the future, then we could have at least made a better trade.

PS Before Devvyn ever played for Santa Clara, she grew up in my hometown. :D Olympia claims her.

I think you're underestimating Sanchez. She's smart, she's good, she's experienced. As with all of this, we'll see once the season starts :)

Thanks for that RB1. Yeah, I think we could all tell that Ian and Borgs didn't mesh well, so it's likely she'll be happier in Boston. It doesn't mean I have to be happy to see her go! It is nice that Keri gets to come home. I'm just frustrated that we couldn't work out something that worked with Danni. I really like her as a player (let's see how much better Pia is with her than Ian was) and I was sad for her last season because she saw such limited PT. This was probably a trade for chemistry as much as anything, and that's fair.

Fair enough, but the last time we saw Sanchez in person she was getting smacked down by Borgman! ;) That's all I can mentally see right now.

This will work out well for Borgman, she'll be happier, and I'll get over it....sort of. :p

At forward? I absolutely agree, and that was what we most needed. She was a steal at #4.

This is cause for much happiness (well, for me anyway). Nothing against Dorn (who I think everyone knows I really like) and Nanez, but I think Barr can provide a presence in our midfield the other two can't.

What is the latest on Boof's injury, anyway? I know it was reported that it was expected that Di would be healthy in time for the start of the season, but that can't be counted on, either.

Hey guys! It's fun having everyone back, talking soccer.
The Borgs/Sanchez trade does make sense, and hopefully this will work out for the players involved. Remember that Tisha and Keri played 4 years together at UNC, and they had great chemistry while there. Keri was also a captain, and there's lots of mutual respect between those two.
I think we lucked out with Barr. I was surprised to see her left when our chance came up. I think she will do good things for us, and I like reading what ya'll have to say about her. Because she has played so far away, I don't know too much about her. Thanks for the info!
If we just had to draft a keeper, why didn't we get UF's Jordan Kellgren? She is great! She's by far one of the most athletic keepers out there. She was picked as the best keeper of the CC last year, and she kept UF in many games this year. I'm really sorry to see that she didn't get picked. Hopefully this other GK will prove to be a worthy pick.
    Keep up the talk, ya'll!
