"BLANTYRE, Aug 3 (Reuters) - English coach Alan Gillet has agreed to stay on for two weeks as the national coach of Malawi, even though his contract is finished and he will not be paid for the extra time." Gillet will stay until the August 16th semi-final against Zambia. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-malawi&prov=reuters&type=lgns I doubt Malawi will have two of their best players for the up-coming COSAFA Cup semi-final against Zambia. Peter Mponda and MacDonald Yobe (Ottawa Wizards) will probably not be available for the match.
Semi-final Malawi 1 (Russell Mwafulirwa 35) Zambia 1 (Sashi Chalwe 89) Malawi wins 4-2 on penalty kicks.
Semi-final #2 Zimbabwe 2 Swaizland 0 Scorers: Peter Ndlovu 3, 53 att: 25,000 Zimbabwe will now play Malawi in the 2003 COSAFA Cup final. The first leg will be played September 27th in Blantyre and October 5th in Harare.
Peter Mponda will miss the rest of the season for the Ottawa Wizards (CSPL) as he has been called up by Malawi. The addition of Mponda (team captain of Malawi) should really help their chances of defeating Zimbabwe. Mponda hasn't played for the national team of Malawi in a few games (if not more).
Malawi probably played one of their most important games ever today in the COSAFA Cup Final 1st leg (South Africa championships). Peter Mponda of the Ottawa Wizards started for Malawi. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe won 2-1 in Blantyre, Malawi. 60,000 people showed up for the match. The return leg will be played in early October.
