If NYC gets a team, I can think of 4 scenarios that could occur. Which one of these will happen? 1) There is a mass of fans in NYC who have been waiting to support an MLS team, but haven't been willing to travel to NJ to support Red Bulls. Red Bulls fans remain loyal to their team in NJ. A "derby" rivalry ensues between the two teams. 2) NY and NJ fans support both teams, bouncing between teams depending on which one is doing better. The "heated rivalry" scenario never happens. 3) Red Bulls fans desert their team to support the more hip new team in NYC. 4) The mass of fans in NYC who are willing to support an MLS team is overestimated. Most are already supporting Red Bulls and have no desire to change allegiances. The NYC team gets supported poorly. 5) Other? I've never lived in an area with two teams competing in the same league, so I don't know how it would work. I understand Cubs v White Sox, kind of understand Yankees v Mets, but don't understand Jets v Giants. BTW, how does Mr. Red Bull, Dieter Mateschitz, and the rest of Red Bull Inc. feel about the possible new team in NYC?
Jets vs Giants is more of a fan rivarly - in fact the only TRUE rivarly in this region is Islanders v Rangers as they play in the same division. Every other rivalry is based upon fans man. Most Mets fans hate the Yankees because of yankee fans reminding us of the 27 championships every year. Jets and Giants is a little different and got more heated recently with Rex Ryan but the fans hate each other. YOu want to hear something even more special about that - Jets fans are MOSTLY made up of people from Queens and Long Island because of the days at Shea - Many (not all of course) giants fans are Jersey based fans. Jets only went to jersey in the mid 80s. Soccer is going to be different as its not a major sport to the AVERAGE sports fan - but there will be a rivalry amongthe die hards as you said and people will take interest. Which is why I really think your point number 1 will happen. Not everyone is going ot jump on the Cosmos wagon. *just want to add - a dying breed but there are many Mets fans who hate the yankees because their old men were Brooklyn Dodger fans. I fall into that category lol
http://www.fieldofschemes.com/2012/08/15/3662/queens-mls-stadium-isnt-imminent-really/ Good Aritlce - we all need to take a step back - best and most true line of this all "So: This stadium may eventually happen, but it’s still very early in the game. The only thing we can be sure of: Don’t believe any “exclusives” in the New York Post."
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/m...stadium-house-mls-franchise-article-1.1136400 "MLS executives and elected officials who are pushing for construction of the facility in Flushing Meadows Corona Park say yes -- but they acknowledge the deal is far from done, and it might be years before a MLS team plays its first home game in north-central Queens. Despite reports suggesting construction could begin early next year, the proposal still has to clear environmental and legislative obstacles" "There's also potential for conflict with local residents, who are concerned about the loss of parkland and opposed to commercial development of the park."
In other words- things look good but dont expect this to begin next year On a side note - who can i offer feedback to about this new layout? It really not good. I post things - it gives me an error - i post again and it shows up like 4 times on the thread Also the entry box - if you paste it changes fonts - its not very user friendly
Red Bull Inc. is privately held & has little to no need or desire to share opinions on the subject. What little has been said has been generally positive.
Red Bulls keeps their fans and remains at about the same level seeing as most of the fan base is based in NJ. NY2 gets some attention early on and then falls back down to about average MLS level then there are two middling teams in the area.
In answer to the original question of "How does that work?" Easy--NY fans will quickly lose interest in the new franchise and whine about "how hard it is" to get to a game, and that they'd really, really support a third franchise that was even closer. Pinky swear!
yea - lets start the NY3 supporters club. Honestly - i think both clubs will do well - i dont expect sell outs and a huge demand for seats but rivalry will boom and i think both teams will average 20K + a game
Islanders and NYR a bigger rivarly than NJ and NYR? No way. Almost all NJ fans will remain loyal to RBNY because it just isn't convenient for them to travel to Queens. Some of the outer New York areas will be mostly RBNY and the only battleground would be Manhattan as LI and closer areas would default to NY2.
Really? Honest question - how old are you? if you are younger i can see you saying that but the Islanders/Rangers game is more intense and bigger - yes the Devils have been better than the Islanders for the past 20 years but historically and overall - Rangers/Islanders is the biggest rivalry in the NY area sports
LOL..must be a kid..Rangers vs Isles is 10 times the rivalry. I know ONE Devil fan..I'm a Ranger fan and know about 100 Isles fans. Yes almost all NJ people will stay, Lower Manhattan people might stay with the Fizzy Drink All stars. The rest is NY1
I love your pain Hillbilly..I really do..i can almost taste those white trash tears from here. Go watch Nascar . Soccer's a commie sport for them foreign types Cletus , didn't anybody tell you that
why even bother - just someone else from outside the area that looks at google maps and thinks he is smarter than everyone. Never has to commute through our city on a daily basis. doesnt understand the city or the area yet can make a comment about how LAZY we are. Woodsy - Citi Field is half emtpy these days - why cant those lazy people from Jersey come and help fill it up
Ok you must live in ny then. I know hundreds of Devils fans and Zero islanders fans. So what's your point? Devils v Rangers is a much better rivalry.
HISTORICALLY? No way - right now on the ice yea - the Devils and Rangers are the better teams but overall historically - sorry - i dont see it. I have gone to both rivalry games and Rangers and Devils games are intense but as bad as the Islanders are right now - the games against the Rangers are much more intense than any Rangers/Devils game ive been too. I mean we can agree to disagree but when the Rangers play the Calgary Flames, and im watching on TV, I still hear the Rangers fans doing "POTVIN SUCKS" - not "PARISE SUCKS"
I know plenty of Devils fans - they hate the Flyers - thats a sick rivalry - i know devils fans that hate the flyers more than the Rangers
I'm a Devil fan. I find myself hating Philthy more than the NY Huns. The Huns and Islanders are the bigger rivalry in the NYC area. To make it a soccer comparison. Islanders v NY Huns would be Dundee v Dundee United. Devils v Huns would be Dundee v St Johnstone. It's a rivalry but not the passionate hate of the Derby.
