This may want to be merged with one of the earlier threads, but it didn't seem to fit well with the points the others had reached... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050709/ap_on_re_us/newspaper_legal_concerns The AP is reporting that Doug Clifton, editor of the Plain Dealer, told the New York Times that he/his paper is holding two stories based on leaked documents becuase of concerns generated by the Miller et al subpeonas and decisions. The stories are presumed to relate to the ongoing state gov't scandals and "the material was under seal or something along those lines." He says he never before has withheld a story over such concerns... So it would appear that as a nation we need to decide pretty quickly which is more important to us-- giving reporters the tools to tell us what they know/can find out, or giving prosecutors the tools to get testimony from reporters. It appears that the damage to the body politic ascribed to the existing setup is already happenening, while it is not clear that the benefit(s) are showing up yet... or ever will.
