I was just about to say the same thing... This year's team takes me back to when I almost totally gave up on the Revs in the late 90's..!! I'm going to hope for the best...what else is there to do??
"Constructing a new side will require a healthy infusion of new players. The Revs imported veterans Cory Gibbs and Preston Burpo from Colorado to join Edgaras Jankauskas and Emmanuel Osei as the experienced hands in an otherwise young group." Is Jankauskas signed? This article seems to suggest he is, but I didn't think so. It would really surprise me if both he AND Navia were signed, I thought it was an either/or thing.
I asked this question before and people had a quote from Nicol saying EJ was coming back. In addition, his name is on the presason roster - although we have no confirmation that he was actually there do we? So, while now official release from Revs he was re-signed, I guess we have to assume that he is.
Paul Mariner - Readers' Q & A Paul, as an Argyle fan living in Boston, MA, I am wondering if over the next season or two you will be using your links to bring across some American talent via the loan system, much like Beckham and Donovan at Milan and Everton. Well we've done that to a certain degree with Kenny Cooper. We tried to do something else with a player over in the US but we got a knock-back off the manager unfortunately. He is a big mate of mine and I was a bit cheesed off but business is business. I wonder if Mariner is talking about Nicol/the Revs? Weren't we supposed to send Shuttleworth over to Plymouth to train with Argyle? Maybe with the gk situation the way it is, Nicol didn't want to send him.
soulds like he is talking about another loan deal. Shuttleworth and knighton were just suppose to go train for a few weeks. If I were Mariner, there might be only 2 or 3 Revs I would want to bring over on loan and one of them has a pain in the neck
Dosent Videira have a European passport? If so he wouldnt need a work permit(or would get one automatically.) Edit: Now that I think about it, Gibbs is married to an English chick so I dont think he would need one either.
I was thinking if there were any more guys with Euro ties that wouldn't need one, and Nicol came to mind just going through the team. That got me to thinking, does a coach need one? Say just hypothetically, the US wins the WC or something and Bradley becomes a hot commodity and English teams want him(I understand that this is as likely as it being 99 degrees tomorrow) would he need a work permit?
Everyone needs a work permit to work there. Obviously the criteria for getting one differ for a coach. As far as players go, no American Revs players have the necessary caps in the last two years to get one straight up, or even on appeal for that matter, so Reis and Twellman are out. If Gibbs has an English wife, I'd assume he has a chance. Videira would be able to get one because of his Euro passport. Is there some kind of waiver for citizens of Grenada? That's the only way the Joseph is clearly eligible, otherwise he'd have to try to get one on appeal.
Has Grenada played any competitive games since their WCQ's other than the Gold Cup? If not, would Shalrie's games in the Gold Cup qualify him for a WP?
The Gold Cup is the continental championship. Your national team not playing games doesn't disqualify you, you just have to play in the ones they do play.
That's what I meant. I was asking the question because if they had played games since the Gold Cup(I didnt think they had) I was pretty sure Shalrie hadnt played in them, so that would bring his pct of games played number down, which I thought was one of the major criteria to getting a work permit.
Grenada's one of those places that used to be part of the Commonwealth, plus the English have proven that they'll break or bend their rules whenever they want to. Shalrie would have no problem getting onto a team in England at least.
The 75% games rule only applies to players from top national teams. I forget what FIFA ranking is the limit, but it's safe to say that Grenada is well below that limit. Yeah, the Commonwealth thing is his best bet. He could still make it on appeal without that, but I think it would be a struggle for a team at Plymouth's current level to get the waiver.
I didnt know exemptions were made for Commonwealth breakaways, then yeah he would have no problem. To be honest even without that avenue I dont think he'd have a problem, he's good enough a player I would think, considering others that have gotten waivers for work permits that didnt technically qualify.
