Interesting. Sounds like she wasn't one of the sick ones in China.

Ready to play: The waiting is the hardest part for Abby Wambach, the Mercy High and University of Florida graduate who earned WUSA Rookie of the Year honors with the Washington Freedom last summer.

Wambach recently returned from China, where the United States won the Four Nations Tournament against world powers China, Germany and Norway.

Wambach did not play in the three games.

“I was surprised,’’ says the Democrat and Chronicle’s Local Pro Athlete of the Year. “Going in I hoped to get some valuable experience, but it didn’t work out that way.’’

Wambach says she is stuck in a “Catch-22.’’

“My coach (April Heinrichs) says I don’t have enough experience,’’ she says, “but how am I going to get experience if I don’t play?’’

Wambach, 22, says she has a “good’’ relationship with Heinrichs but adds that “she’s a tough coach mentally. She says what she wants you to do and then can want something totally different at game time.

“It’s tough on players’ confidence.’'
