I think Cherundolo is a right half back, stuck at right defender in an offensive-minded Hannover system. Olafgb had a good explanation, it was not all Steve's fault. However, clearly he made a bad, even terrible play.

Having said, many midfielders, if they played deeper, and played the same way they did in midfield, would make that ONE or TWO mistakes a game like Cherundolo that kills you. Playing in the back is a different mentality than midfield, and obviously one that Steve occasionally (which is too often) struggles with. Also, there is a size-problem for him on some match-ups

I still think Stevie C. can play at BL level, but it may wind up being for another team at right mid, and not Hannover. I think he going to need a few games on bench to work his way out of the doghouse for this.

The whole thing is such a shame. Hannover sounded awesome the first 2/3rd (or more) of the match....

I love it how the Hannover 96's website calls Clint's goal a "world class goal!" [IMG]

Most impressive. It really is a lot like the famous goal he scored while with the metro. You have got to love a player with so much confidence.

Oh my God, that was an old-fashioned Clint Mathis scorcher. What a good sign.

Jesus what a goal. The speed, and the shot, I thought it was a one on one vs the goalie. That shot was outside of the box! From the descriptions, it seemed that Mathis had gotten by teh defenders, but this goal is quite different from the Dallas goal (i.e. he ran by people, while here he made the last defender stand back, and give him space). Still splendid, but different.

I tried to order a plain one from the Hannover website the day he signed. It cost as much to ship it as the shirt did. They need to wise up and start making a bunch of No. 44s right quick and get the shipping cost down to thirty bucks.

    damn.

I have to admit I expected a lazer shot from 30 meters, but that was still quite nice. Crappy play by the Placente to send him off.

I can only imagine Cletus saying "How do you like me now?"

He looks faster than before the injuries. So quick, so freaking sharp.

    Damn!

I love Cletus! I will never forget my section chanting "You Fat Bastard!" and having him score at the other end, make the run all the way back to us, and ask "Who's the Fat Bastard now???!!!" *LOL*

Intelligent play by Clint as soon as the corner looks like it will not be dangerous, to turn on the gas and head downfield.

Can Mathis be to us the equivalent of what Ronaldo is to Brazil and Crespo to Argentina?

From the earlier descriptions in this thread, I was expecting a far more spectacular goal. It was very nice, but I would hardly compare it with the slalom run that he had in Dallas. Due to BL's error, he was basically allowed to run full speed at the last defender, with a lot of space for this last defender to cover.

Here are some comments direct from the Hannover 96 homepage forum about Mathis. I'm going to leave out the ones about Cherundolo because they're not too happy with him right now...

absolut unverständlich allerdings die auswechslung von mathis. der einzige der heute den richtigen fighting spirit gezeigt hat.

Absolutely not understanding subbing Mathis out. The only one who displayed the right fighting spirit today.

Nach dem Abpfiff musste ich erst mal tief durchatmen und alles ein wenig sacken lassen.
    Die Glanzpunkte: Mathis und Schröter.

After the final whistle, I had to breathe deeply and simply let it go. The highlights? Mathis and Schroeter.

Am besten davon war Mathis. Auch ein klasse Tor was er schoss.

The best of them was Mathis. It was a classy goal that he shot.

Mathis: Gefiel mir genauso gut wie gegen den HSV einfach überragend! Wer ist den SIMAK???

Mathis: Impressed me just as much as against Hamburg SV. Simply overpowering! Who's SIMAK???

Mathis und Schröter waren die einzigen Aktivposten im Mittelfeld

Mathis and Schroeter were the only ones active in the midfield.

This thread pisses me off when I think about all of the "Fat Mathis" threads we've had to endure the past 2 years. When he actually gets good service and plays with players that can think 2 moves ahead, he's the *#*#*#*#. He has shown it at every level. Any real fans of US Soccer would not have criticized him so much.

    The MetroMutts didn't deserve him.

Dude, this was a World Class goal. The Dallas goal was one of the best ever, but MLS defenders are nothing to write home about.
