Utah 3:2 BYU ------------------ Why are the first and second round games at BYU on the 14th and 16th instead of the 15th and 17th like the rest of the tourney? Please tell me it's not cuz of Sunday.....
GO UTES!!!!!! After far too many losses to the Cougars, Utah finally beats them for the first time ever and in the tournament no less. The games in Provo were indeed scheduled on Thrus/Sat instead of Fri/Sun because BYU refuses to have any of their athletic teams compete on a Sunday. (Of course now the Utah won and will be playing on Saturday, it didn't matter anyway)
If BYU had made the championship... The NCAA has a rule, commonly called the "BYU rule", which allows for rescheduling of the game should any school that will not play on a Sunday get to a championship game. There was some discussion of this during the women's NCAA basketball tournament last year because BYU made the Sweet 16. There is a nice article about what the NCAA would have done if the Cougars had made the Final Four here: Salt Lake Tribune: NCAA Would Alter Schedule If Cougs Reach Final.
Thanks for the link, I wonder how many more upsets there will be in the first round? Michigan State (12-7-2) 1 Miami U. of Ohio (19-2-2) 2
Oakland (10-12-1) 0 0 0 Michigan (14-6-1) 0 1 1 FINAL SCORING: 2nd -- U-M, Andrea Kayal, 49:51 (Amy Sullivant)
So far I'm not seening any large upsets, only small ones. (Thanks for posting the differences in the Jones ratings in another thread, BTW) Utah over BYU is only a mild upset, based on a a difference in the Jones ratings of 172 (plus 50 for home field advantage). (The standard errors in the Jones ratings are fairly large) Yale over 'Nova (139 point difference) is also not a large upset. With a rating difference of less than 100 points (74), Miami over Michigan St. is hardly even an upset. We also haven't had a big upset in Division III yet. I'm looking for one where the rating difference is 300 points or more. That's what I'll call an upset.
Eastern Illinois and Purdue just ended their second overtime locked at 1-1 and are heading to PKs For what it's worth, Jones has Purdue at #28 (1811 rating) and EI at #149 (1362 rating), with a rating differential of 449.
