I always think 6 years is max for an international manager anyway. They only get to work with the players in short bursts of periods and the same voice, same tactics, same methods get stale after a while.

You saw them shoehorning players in despite form and at the expense of the formation. Y’all have been doing the same shit since Sven eriksen, over two decades.

    Who is "them"?

Given current levels, expecting England to win is not an over expectation in any form.

Southgate under performed and he knows that, hence the resignation.

    no.

England have good players but so what. so do other teams. England has never even struck me as a coherent unit or having a particularly good plan.

even in an era where some other traditional powerhouses are significantly weaker, nothing about England says winners. not to me anyway.

two easier paths to the finals in two Euros and not playing particularly well or well at all in either. the two World Cups were stopped by the first decent opponents in the knockouts.

there is reason England has only won one thing ever almost 60 years ago. contenders maybe sure but not expected winners not for me. especially when you have very few to no answers against the top teams for many years now

Having a coherent plan and strategy is set by the manager. That's what I'm saying.

Southgate had more than enough tools at his disposal and he came up short. That happens. He didn't have unrealistic expectations when you look at the context of everything.

you didn't have the best players overall either.

Southgate got lucky with bracket runs at times. despite that, his results still count. he's been on par or slightly overachieved imo

Southgate deserves some credit given how low England were when he took over. However he has had some better players at his disposal recently.

So over the 8 years or so he has over-performed, however over the last few years he has under-performed (in particular when you take into account his runs to the final and his record against better teams).

Bigger question is what direction do the FA go next.

Again, before picking the manager they should pick a strategy (different to the current one that has ultimately failed). Again for me (same as the issue we have at United) playing defensive in a mid to low-block will only get you so far. If you want to aim for winning competitions you have to go the high-pressing (and consequently high-defensive line) route - similar to how Spain played. We do have players who play at City, Liverpool, Real Madrid etc. who can play that way.

So the need is for a high-pressing, high-line manager. That for me would rule out the locals that the FA always look to first (Potter, Howe). However you do need someone with experience of English football and preferably someone with experience of other nations football.

The England job is one of the highest paid in world football. So would start by going after the top targets, even if they are likely to be unacheivable - Guardiola, Ancelotti, Klopp.

Then maybe look to settle for somebody such as Poch if all other avenues exhausted.

He got lucky two tournements in a row?

I can agree with lack of plan and other things. I think they have some of the best players for sure.

Foden, Kane, Shaw, Walker can start on other so called power houses.

England had the easier side of the bracket in the last two Euros

i said they don't have the best players overall. they aren't the best squad or team.

those guys get in IF they keep their club form. only Kane and Walker do that for me

BBC piece on the 6 players Chelsea have spent £95m on this summer so far and some stuff they are doing to fund it.

£95m spent, six players bought - who are Chelsea's early summer signings?

"There was also the controversial sale of two hotels for £76.5m to a sister company that helped balance the last set of books, while Mason Mount's £55m transfer to Manchester United is believed to have been booked on the 2023-24 season accounts.“

I gotta agree to disagree. I can see why you feel that way though. We probably disagree on how good some of these players are.

Im only listing these comparisons just for dicussion sake and not neccasrasrily to argue.

    • I think Foden is as good as Pedri and better than Olmo.
    • I think Inaki Williams is good, but his profile is perfect for what his team is doing. Anthony Gordon had the same amount of assist and double the goals during the league camgpaign [if club form holds up, I didnt forget that]
    • Shaw is twice the player Cucarella is and I dont even rate Shaw as world class or anything "special".
    • One could make the claim Laporte was ousted by John Stones [maybe reaching a bit].

Im not sure if I said this, but England need a foreign coach/manager.

Howe isnt ready. Potter isnt enough. There's no other option being spoken of, other besides u21 Manager Lee Carsley.

Heard on a radio show that they should copy spain, seeing as their coachw as former u21. England cant copy Spain because the structure and trust in Youth is different.

I always figured Pep takes England job for '26 WC. I even think FA is willing to wait until his contract with City ends in '25.

Supposedly Brentford are beginning to realise that there has been a bit of a recession in transfer prices and their £80m valuation of Ivan Toney (with a year left on his contract) is why there has been no interested.

So reportedly have dropped his price by £30m to £50m - as now getting a bit desperate having secured his replacement and given he doesnt intend renewing.
