Who: Swampland MetroCows v. D.C. United What: Eastern Semifinal Leg 2 When: Sunday 11/8 3 PM Where: Red Bull Arena Why: 2 Legs First Leg: D.C. 0-1 RB D.C. advance with a 1 goal or greater victory scoring at least 2 goals. Extra time if D.C. win 1-0 In the context of this team, this may seem improbable, but in the context of soccer, this is completely possible. Likely Lineup? Hamid Birnbaum Boswell Opare Kemp Rolfe Kitchen Halsti NDL Fabi Sabo
Birnbaum isn't that good on the outside. I would prefer Mishu. But the above is probably what Ben will do.
Fun Fact of the Day: Olsen's DC United have 2 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw at redbull. *The most recent win was in the 2012 playoffs.
There is very little in that fact that I would describe as "fun". I expect them to come out and try to pound us, pushing hard early with a strong home field advantage. If we can absorb the early pressure -- and assuming we come onto the field really focused and ready, which has been a hell of a problem in recent months -- we have a chance. But that's a big if. I'd love to see Arieta or Aguilar to push the issue and help us with pace. We'll likely see Doyle instead, sadly.
All I hope is that we play somewhat offensive-minded - though since we didn't do that at home I am skeptical we'll do it in Jersey. cute baby animal: actual thing pulled from a NJ river:
Why can't RBNY players drink a lot of Red Bull and go fishing in their rivers!?! Hopefully those type of things would gulp a few of them!
Best case scenario: NYRB comes out trying to put the game away early, over-commits, and we get Espindola isolated against that hacking bastard Zubar. We go into the half at 1-1 overall. Second half: DC fades a bit out of exhaustion, but can sub in an offensive black hole like Doyle because the team's gotten even. Hamid bails us out a few times, and either we score off a set piece or get to penalties, and who the hell knows what happens then. Worst case scenario: DC becomes (I assume) the first team in MLS history to manage no shots on goal over a two-leg series. An early BWP goal should force DC to push forward, but the team doesn't know how beyond lumping the ball long, and the ineptitude makes out first match possession numbers look like Spain 2010. A 3-0 loss gives us a 4-0 composite shellacking. As much as I hate it, I'm hoping to put Rolfe up top for this one. Start Doyle on the wing. We can't sub Rolfe off in the 70th minute here, and putting him up top means less defensive responsibility. That puts a lot more pressure on DeLeon to get involved offensively, but a well worked combo between him, Fabi and Rolfe seems like our best chance to get on the board. R.
I can see that happening, but I can also see Zubar scoring an own-goal and then Hamid saving our bacon in pks!
I'm not sure where, historically, y'all get the idea that Hamid would save our bacon in PKs I kinda like the idea of Doyle on the wing (mostly because it moves Rolfe up top and provides defensive cover of a sort for Kemp or at least someone to split running up and down the wing covering Sam). I like the idea of Mishu starting on the right
I think you should be more positive - Red bulls will get three red cards on the opening kickoff like this guy did entering as a sub. As a result we win 1-0 on a punt by Bill Hamid and then win in Pk's EDIT: Start at 5:30
I just want to point out that Casa de Funk sounds way better than Casa de Foot, or Casa de pie, as it were
Fun Fact of the Day: DC United's playoff away record is 7 wins from 14 games played (that includes games decided by penalties as wins). 3 of those 7 wins were by more than one goal (2-1; 2-1; 2-0) The last and largest away playoff (multi-goal) win was a 2-0 win over the metrostars in 2004.
