"The interesting twist Sunday was Alecko Eskandarian scoring two goals and being named Player of the Game as New England defeated Kansas City to win the MLS Cup." Um, New England? Fact checking in the press is really a sad lot sometimes.
The way Kansas City played, we would have won, too. In fact, I'd bet that you could just fill in the blank with any other team this year and KC would still have lost.
Actually, this was a heckuvalot better than some work from 'professional journalists' that I've seen. Basic, but clearly informed and respectful.
Well, I guess the title should have been: "Carson Daily Breeze is a Work still in Progress" About Eskandarian, he could have pointed out that he left college early and is the son of immigrants...
I can say there's a kid at Montgomery Blair HS they could hire if they're interested in improving their quality.
I was going to say the same thing. I thought the parallel he drew between DC and Rimando showed that he did a little research at least. He spelled Burciaga right and knew which teams played in MLS Cup. That puts him up on about half the sports journalists who write about soccer.
I emailed the writer to point out that massive error, and he responded: "OUCH. Absolutely no excuse for that mistake."
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/soccer/20041117-9999-lz1s17goal1.html This article is right on the money about the boring, conservative play in MLS this past year. Hopefully they can change.
Well, in a centrally controlled league, you can always affect that primarily by which players you sign, which players you keep, and which you let go. Maybe you drop the Alex Zotincas and Simo Vaalikaris and Igor Simutenkovs of the world for guys who play closer to goal.
I think a couple of steps should help: BY increasing the SI number, one is hoping offensive midfielders are used with these picks And, although not mentioned in the article, firing the Hankinson on the Colorado team cannot possibly hurt.... and just to throw an opinion out there: think Sampson will surprise a few people next season.....
I recall many times that I'd watch a game from SJ and then see the official attendance figures and they seemed to be really low! Could this have factored into the situation at all: From the Monterry Herald: The Earthquakes pay rent on a sliding scale of roughly $30,000 to $70,000 per game, depending on attendance. hmmmm.....
Firing Hankinson was a good step forward. He was the coach most guilty of this. But you still have to worry about Andrulis, Nichol, and Gansler. They are major offenders.
I think Andrulis is a dead man walking. Unfortunately, there's a pretty good chance Nichol saved himself again, even though as a whole the Revs have really not performed under him. (Gansler, I think, is safe). I think we'll be more or less OK if you set the precedent that if you're gonna play super conservative, you'd better win. Mid-table with among the fewest GF two years in a row? You get the axe.
