vancouver and the renovated BC place are excellent, i don't think that's an issue, but if we're talking about needing 2 cities they'd have to be reasonably close, which is why toronto/montreal is really the only canadian option.
Yes, geography would make toronto/montreal the clear choice. Anyway the financial guarantees of USD 70 million that FIFA requires for back-to-back tournaments is probably the main stumbling block for Canada, or even the USA for that matter. But we're getting side-tracked, still no news on the venue?
Sportsnet (a cable sports channel who's parent company is one of the parties that joined to buy TFC's parent company earlier this month) is reporting that the game will be played indoors at the Rogers Centre on March 7th. http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2011/12/21/tfc_rogers_centre/
If Toronto's leaked schedule is correct. Toronto has the week between games off while LA hosts their league opener between the CCL games.
Scuttlebutt is that sales for the home leg of the TFC v Galaxy quarter final at Skydome/Rogers Centre have passed the 14k mark. Presently, sales are only open to season ticket holders opening to the general public later this week. BTW, Skydome holds 52k for soccer so there is no way we can beat the Montreal attendance mark. TFC have stated that capacity for this match will be 45k. B
Jays opening day. It is always a virtual sell out. The next night might have only 14k but opening day will be 50k and up.
My college is arranging a trip for students that live in residence, so I'm going to be attending. I've never attended an MLS game. 3 TFC-Montreal NCC games, and now this CCL game. Eventually. Eventually.
So the latest news is 35K sold with 10K remaining? Certainly impressive and hopefully TFC can pull off the upset. The last thing the CCL needs is a semifinal and potentially final with a restricted stadium attendance because of student parking.
Los Angeles-Toronto sports related topic, this matchup could be as big as the 1993 Stanley Cup playoff series between the L.A. Kings and the Maple Leafs. Yes, Paul Beirne, TFC's Dir of Bus Ops has tweeted that apart from scattered singles, the Rogers Centre is sold out. They will release another 1000 from the HSBC club, a swishy VIP area. http://www.rogerscentre.com/corporate/premium_clubvip.jsp
The Galaxy have an attendance cap of 7,500 in place for this match. I for one can't help but wonder whether they will even get that many?
A silly agreement they have with the university, that hdc is located on. For non MLS matches on school nights, they put a cap on attendance.
What's even more bizarre, is that with only 7,500 tickets, I've heard they've given them to all the season ticket holders, and there are still tickets available on Ticketmaster. Do they really have that few season ticket holders? Seems bizarre that demand is so pitiful. I don't expect it to be as strong as in Canada, but I really don't expect it that low. I'd have though 15,000 minimum ... so I'd have thought the few available tickets would have quickly vanished.
