the original plan in the late 1980's for a breakaway top flight league from the football League
was the ITV 10 consisting of

    1. Man United
    2. Liverpool
    3. Arsenal
    4. Tottenham Hotspur
    5. Everton
    6. Nottingham Forest
    7. West Ham United
    8. Aston Villa
    9. Newcastle United
    10. Sheffield Wednesday

I think cutting the F.A. Premier League to 10 teams each season is a great idea.

the quality of the league would increase dramatically.

Especially if Rangers and Celtic were added into the League to create a British Super League.

    quality not quantity
Under a 10 team league you could get 4 instead of 2 Man City v Liverpool matches each season and none instead of 2 burnley v Norwich fixtures in the top flight.

many people are intrested in liverpool v Man city fixtures but few(er) are interested in burnely v norwich fixtures.

surely that is what most people want especially but not just in asia.

plus maybe if the money is more conentrated we could have all premier league stadium be fully rertactable roofed meaning matches could be play indoors or outdoors and stop the weather from ruining matches.

Plus the standard of play would surely be better if the talent was more conentrated in 10 teams instead of 20 teams in the top flight.

Your reasoning sounds like the stuff that idiot that owns Real Madrid came out with when he tried selling a so called European Super League! I would rather Chelsea played Fulham next season than Manchester City FOUR times thank you very much! The LAST thing we need is turn the Premier League into the Scottish League!

That comment applies more to Closed Leagues than Open Leagues!

My Idea of a Ten team FA Premier League is an open league as it still has promotion and relegation in it.

Query: What is the optimal size of the premier League/top flight of English.

saying 20 clubs playing each other twice for 38 games per team in the league is not a answer if the only reason you pick that is because you don't like change as that is the size current size of the top flight league.

You need to explain why the optimal number?

Could adopt a system similar to what they use in Scotland (I think SPFL has 12 teams but you get the idea).

I wish every match in the Premier League was played indoors so that fans and players can get the optimum playing conditions in each match.

So every team in the league would have twice as much money as in any given season when that league has 10 teams compared to 20 teams. meaning clubs would have more money to put a retractable over their whole stadium.

    quality or quantity
example between 1950 and 1992 money was spread between (all) 92 club and the fan experience was average yet since 1992 when the top flight money was mainly concentrated in top flight 20 clubs each season the fan experience has improved to almost the wow factor.

if you were starting English football again and used the franchise system like they do in the Indian Premier League in Cricket you could say build 10 retractable roof stadia (ideally identical copies of the Principality stadium in Cardiff) and give fans the optimum stadium experience at every match.

I just know that concentrating the resources and spreading it less thinly can improve the fan experience to the WOW level.

    Excluding land costs

Premier League football matches should have the razmataz of the WWE.

Too much of it is still dull and dishwater and in some ways it would be easier if English league football was being started from scratch then you would not have to get rid of outdated things like but not just Kenilworth road first to get to the point zero., you would already be at point zero thus could implomented the jazzed up stuff straight away.

bright brash colorful fun. Like this below yes a different sport but the same jazzing up needs to be done and could in Premier League football.

ok not every club can have a and fill a 80,000 all-seated stadium but whatever there size of stadium can and must be jazzed up.

The main reason the Premier League club broke away from the football league are/were/
    1. Power struggle between Football Association & Football League.
    2. Big clubs keeping more of the money they generate.
    3. Decrepit state of englsih fotball in the 1980,
‘a slum sport played in slum stadiums increasingly watched by slum people’ as declared by the Sunday Times in 1985 after the Bradford fire disaster that took 56 lives.
    4. Greg dyke then of itv to make have more man United v Arsenal type fixture and less Notts county v Luton fixtures in order for itv to make more money televising English league football.

anything needs to ensure it is fit for the given period of time evolve or die and the football League in the 1980 were to reluctant to make the required changes to the leagues in order to make it fit for purpose.
