In what must surely be a sign of the apocalypse, my local paper, The Lynchburg (Va.) News and Daily Advance, had the AP story on the front page of the Sports Section.

Kudos to the two Boston papers. 9 articles in the Globe and 6 in the Herald, a pretty good amount of exposure for MLS Cup.

I don't understand why the LA Times didn't have that much coverage, however. Maybe because of the World Series? Whatever it is, the surely could've put a little more effort into reporting on MLS Cup.

It's nice to see that many MLS-related articles come out. Very encouraging.

Seems like an appropriate day to mention the Central American press...

Guatemala's www.prensalibre.com has the memorable headline, "Pescado Dorado." ("Goldfish?")

    http://www.elsalvador.com/deportes/2002/10/21/depor15.shtml

Cienfuegos says this title is great, but not as good as the one he and Diaz Arce won for Firpo during El Salvador's civil war. That club had gone 60 years without a title, not 6.

The coverage here in Boston is great, but let's not kid ourselves. The Patriots were off yesterday, which opened up a lot of space in the sports sections.

... topped off with the wonderfully ironic headline, "Galaxy No Longer a Footnote." :)

From Beau Dure's article in the USA Today,

"Paysse's translation skills helped in a pregame interview with Ruiz, but sadly, she wasn't able to convince the Galaxy forward to turn around for a quick word after the game. (Paysse's admirers, and there are quite a few, will surely question Ruiz's sanity.)"

You could replace sanity with another noun that begins with 'S' ;)

Yeah, but LA has had a 6-year bye week in the NFL.

True, but if the Red Sox were in the World Series, we would have been lucky to get two articles on the MLS Cup.

If the Red Sox made the series, the return of Jesus himself would have gotten little more than a paragraph. ;)

Yeah. While I'm glad for the Galaxy, and feel they deserved the win, I have been finding myself puzzled over the 'SEVEN' years being trumpted around, like it's a long time. OK. Going three times and failing, yeah, that's frustrating. But seven years is nothing. Just ask any nearby baseball fan when the last time was that their team won a championship. Unless that person happens to be a Yankees fan, it's been at least that long.

Saw this in the Chicago Sun-Times with an interesting bit about the metros:

"The MetroStars have rarely been a contender in their seven MLS seasons but, in addition to financial considerations, they offer two pluses for Bradley. He has a New Jersey background, having been raised in Montclair and having coached at Princeton. The MetroStars will also get a new home field next season. Bradley has made no secret of his dislike for the artificial-turf playing surface the Fire used at Cardinal Stadium in Naperville last season. The Fire is to play there again next season and has tentative plans to return to Soldier Field when that stadium's renovation is completed."

Am I missing someting on the stadium situation with the Metros? I knew they couldnt play any playoff games at the swamp, but are they finished their for good?

i think it's in reference to the meadowlands going with turf... or at least it appears that they are going that route... i had an article from the NY Daily News on this topic yesterday (check that thread)

i checked the damn sun times earlier, and they had no article... thanks for pulling it out

It was the lead story in the print edition of the Sports section which is actually quite impressive for the Times

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm in heaven over the Globe's coverage, particularly Jackie MacMullan's column and the gorgeous photo of the decisive goal. Seeing the Revs play for the championship in front of 60,000 fans is something I never expectred to see in my life.

But there's no point in pretending that the Patriots' bye-week didn't help sell tickets or enable greater media attention.

Of course: It definitely made a difference in media coverage and probably attendance as well. That's why MLS picked Foxboro on Oct. 20.

Uh people, MLS began play in April this year. The NFL schedule is set in May sometime. Who wants to bet that Bob Kraft went to the NFL schedulers and said "I've got a big soccer event in CMGI on Oct. 20. Please make sure the Pats are off that day."

It wouldn't surprise me. For all the (undeserved, IMHO) stick Kraft gets, people forget the Revs (and soccer by extenstion) have their own facilities, including locker rooms, etc.
