    KC
    In the first link.....

""Because in baseball," she said, "they always have to stop. Soccer just keeps going until (the ball) goes out."

Very true. Except for a brief halftime, pro soccer players run flat-out and nonstop, arms and elbows flailing, for 90 minutes.

No pitching changes. No seventh-inning stretch. For that matter, no chain measurements, huddles or two-minute warnings.

Yes, I'd say the Wizards have a pretty good future ahead of them in a nation where the attention span shrinks by the nanosecond."

Haven't we been saying this all along? Good article, finally someone says it in KC. I'm sending a very nice email.

No offense, but it's better than KC.

(Preparing to be flamed by KC native patriots.)

Why? If you look at the three big sports- baseball, football, and soccer - KC has been champions in each one while Denver has only won in football.

The 3 big sports in the US are football, baseball and basketball. Add hockey and trailing is soccer.
Denver has two Super Bowl winners, an expansion franchise in baseball that has had some success in attendance but not yet in the standings, a basketball team that is forgetable, a hockey team that has won the Stanley Cup, and a soccer team that led the league in attendance this year and is in the running for the MLS Cup this year.

KC has the Chiefs, the Royals (of the George Brett era), and a basketball team playing in Sacramento! Hockey? But KC does have the MLS Cup from 2 years ago.

Balance has to go to Denver.

Johnson tells me it's all a matter of waiting for the Purple Wave Wildcats to grow up.

"That's our target market," he said.>>

They've (soccer fanatics) have been saying that since the '70s. What youth soccer players turn into is not pro soccer viewers. Youth soccer players may grow up watching other sports, BUT...they will at least appreciate soccer. Now it's a matter of finding those kids who played in the 70's, 80's & 90's and getting them to attend a game and get them as excited as those little girls and that columnist. MLS can't wait 10-15 years for kids to grow up.

Whaddya mean "Hockey?" Our NHL team won the Stanley Cup too. Granted they're now in New Jersey, after a brief stopover in Denver. :)

Mostly agree Joe, but at least those youth kids have a team to follow, for so long before MLS they did not.

Watching my 11 year old daughter (youth soccer player) get autographs from Donovan, Valderama, Cobi, and all the other stars who grace Arrowhead, along with as many Wizards as she can, she is hooked. A couple of matches ago she got 20 autographs in one match.

This closer connection to the stars in the league is something MLS should exploit more, so many of today's sports figures are aloof and hard to approach. Most MLS players are glad of the attention.

Incidentally Meola and Preki hardly ever give their autographs out while Garcia and Klein regularly circulate the whole stadium after each match. My kids love these two for this and are beginning to wonder about the other two, it tells you a lot.

Every KC team is a champion. Can you say the same about Denver???? KC is the city of champions. The only city that comes in a close #2 is New York.

IMHO, Denver has more "current" champions than KC. How long ago did the Chiefs win a Super Bowl? Heck long ago has it been since the Chiefs were in a Super Bowl! The same for the Royals. When did they last have a winning season? The Broncos and the Avalanche have had a recent taste of championship champaign! The city of champions in the US last year was San Jose! Two soccer champions. :)

Re: Re: Re: 10/2 KC Star articles

We had the NASL Quakes from 74-83. I fondly recall the players signing autographs and doing PR stunts at schools. Those eager kids who got autographs and had soccer heroes have grown into hopefully pro soccer fans. But so many kids didn't. The SJ Mercury did a story not too long ago about a championship youth team from that era. Only 2 of those kids grew up to follow pro soccer. And that might have to do with the lack of a league from the end of the NASL until MLS that had a national identity. Only MLS has 10 teams. It needs more teams for a bigger imprint on the sports market. Kind of a catch-22 situation right now for MLS.

    Totally agree Joe.

We need more teams in more cities and we need the league to stick around for a long long time.

The players, ALL the players need to do their part, PR, autographs, appearances, whatever it takes.

This is a long slow process.

I got good responses back from Mike and David. David had a great point about our foward line. I just hope it makes sense!

"I'm glad you enjoyed my stories. I really think the Wizards will be better next year if they can start training camp with Dario and Igor. Every year the Wizards are breaking in new forwards and that has hurt their scoring."
