people that stupid should be taken out and shot... i seriously have no clue what the hell is he thinking at all

national team call-ups... umm ok, no other team in the league had to deal with that

yellow card suspensions... once again, no other team had to deal with that

injuries... dayak tore a muscle, goose could play but wasn't the same after the cup (oh no), and mulrooney broke his ankle with 3 weeks left in the season

3 injuries, one not enough to keep him out

OH MY GOD.... STOP THE PRESSES!!!

someone please blow on their boo-boos... i think donovan needs another diaper change

good riddance to a city of crap, keep whining like babies, we will remember

Thought you'd dig that one. You know, the Fire might have actually been able to repeat line-ups from game to game down the stretch, but if said line-up includes Billy Walsh, it doesn't count.

no problem, i always like being able to give you a break

i just hope that san jose writer doesn't sire any children... it's one thing to make note of things that hurt a team through out the course of the season, it's another to act like none of those things took place with the rest of the teams in the league

    don't knock walsh

sure he ain't as good offensively as other fire players... but compared to vaud or gray as d-mid or a 4th back... i'd take walsh as a d-mid any day, losing armas hurt... the fire haven't been able to hold down the back without 2 d-mids and even then

    whitfield: acl
    armas: acl
    wolff: acl
    nowak: mcl
    hristo: knee surgery (mcl?)
    nugent: meniscus tear
    sleeth: meniscus tear
razov: dislocated shoulder, surgery when season is over... has scored 3 goals since this injury
daniv: tore something in his big toe and needed surgery
    beasely: knee problems earlier
razov: i believe, besides the shoulder, he has missed games due to injury

that's two nobodies and a bunch of somebodies... and i am probably missing injuries

when the fire attempted to sign dispy selolwane to help out the offense, dipsy contracted chicken pox

Gotta love the first 2 paragraphs from the KC star article:

"Wizards coach Bob Gansler brought the 2000 MLS Cup trophy into the locker room Monday morning as incentive for the players who were somewhere else during that magical season.

"Los Angeles coach Sigi Schmid is unable to use that motivational ploy. All the Galaxy has to show for its seven years in Major League Soccer is three runner-up finishes, including last year's 2-1 loss to San Jose in the title game."

in case anyone missed the meaning behind the thread title... if LA is knocked out tonight, any hope of someone winning the domestic treble is gone

treble: US Open Cup, MLS Supporter's Shield, MLS Open Cup

The Modesto Bee website has an "MLS Playoffs" link on its front page.

Beautiful. Don't tell the Gals fans, though. Seeing grown men cry is unpleasant.

Great column. What beat does he normally cover?

He later apologizes for a comment he made two years ago about how no one cares about the Wizards.

The KC Star piece also illustrates a key concept that Frank DeFord fails to understand when he compares soccer to mumblety-pegs (a bizarre game from his childhood) in arguing that kids may play soccer, but they don’t grow up to become soccer fans: if you want the soccer-playing kiddies to become long-term MLS fans you have to give them a local MLS team to follow. Otherwise, they’re likely to grow up and forget about soccer just like DeFord has been saying for years. There's a reason why many of the kids who grew up playing youth soccer from, say, 1984-1996 didn't grow up to become fans of pro soccer. Hopefully, the ol’ boys who gather up at Phil’s ranch after the MLS season will keep that concept in mind when the conversation turns to expansion.

anderson, that's a great point that I actually haven't heard before.

The last wave of soccer children in the 70s didn't become fans, but not because the "if they play it as children, then..." premise is wrong. It's because they had nothing to follow. Probably won't do much to shut up soccer critics (they'll ask "well, why have leagues failed so many times?"), but it answer the question for me.

The problem in American soccer has been one of vision and leadership, not of fans not wanting to watch it.
