From the Myrtle Beach Sun News:

Five years ago, U.S. women had never won a World Cup championship.

I thought the USWNT had won the the Women's World Cup in 1991.

I don't think it was known as the "Women's World Cup" then. I believe it had a different title. So, while the article is technically correct, for all intents and purposes they had won one before, just wasn't called that.

This is wrong and so was the article.

It WAS called the Women's World Cup. From April Heinrichs' bio: Heinrichs was a key player on the 1991 U.S. squad that won the first ever Women's World Cup,

title is also a song reference

today's thread had two song title possibilities, I chose trial by fire because I prefer that song to the other. curious if anyone knows what band performed trial by fire and what the other song possibility was.

Yeah, I'm not sure about that. I believe it was called by another name in the first edition. The fact that we've all come to call it the WC 12 years later doesn't mean it was called that then. Anyone else remember/have a link?

Apparently the official name of the tournament was, the "FIFA Women's World Championship" for the 1991 and 1995 editions.

Kind of a stupid statement in the article, then, wasn't it? By that standard, five years ago NO ONE had ever won the Women's World Cup.

I'm pretty sure they just screwed up, and didn't know about 1991.

Either Journey or Steve Perry solo.

I was thinking of the version done by Testament on their 1987 release, "The New Order".

The other song title was going to be Madonna's "Borderline"

Well, the first few men's World Cups were called World Championships, too. Was the 1930 World Cup not a World Cup, then...?

It's really a ridiculous argument. I don't suppose the first World Series was called the World Series either, but I'm not entirely sure it matters at all, except in the most technical, nitpicky sense.

Well, yeah. If I wasn't picking nits on BigSoccer, I'd have to do some work, and who the hell wants that?
