The thrilling match between Hungary and Ireland made me forget to look at the end of Portugal's match.
Portugal in as #31 as Group F winners. Hungary/Ireland is for 2nd. 3rd are eliminated. 1. United States 2. Mexico 3. Canada 4. Japan 5. New Zealand 6. Iran 7. Argentina 8. Uzebekistan 9. South Korea 10. Jordan 11. Australia 12. Brazil 13. Ecuador 14. Uruguay 15. Colombia 16. Paraguay 17. Morocco 18. Tunisia 19. Egypt 20. Algeria 21. Ghana 22. Cape Verde 23. South Africa 24. Qatar 25. England 26. Saudi Arabia 27. Cote d'Ivoire 28. Senegal 29. France 30. Croatia 31. Portugal
5 min extra time, Hungarian side cleared the ball but the referee didn't stop the game at 5:09 minutes
#1: It is stoppage time, not added time. #2: It is a MINIMUM of x minutes, not x minutes exactly. 5 in this case.
Like Portugal, let's see if I can finally get a Playoff Qualification post right at the third time. I. Intercontinental PO's: Clinched (2) Playoff updates (Ranks) 1. OFC (1): New Caledonia (150) 2. CONMEBOL (1): Bolivia (76) II. Intercontinental PO's: Undecided (4) 3. CAF (1): Nigeria (41)/DR Congo (60) 4. AFC (1): Iraq (58)/UAE (67) 5. CONCACAF: atm Panama (31) 6. CONCACAF: atm Jamaica (68) ---------- CAF will decide their PO entrant today at a neutral site. AFC will play leg 2 Tue in Iraq after a 1-1 draw in leg 1. CONCACAF is murkier, with 7 teams alive for 5 spots (3 direct, 2 PO). Haiti & Costa Rica are also still in the hunt in CONCACAF. III. UEFA POs (16) Portugal clinch Group F, Ireland eliminate Hungary with a last gasp winner. With the exception of whomever finishes 3rd between Iceland & Ukraine, no more UEFA eliminations this week. A. Group 2nds (12) 1. Clinched, 2nd Place Only (3) 1. Czech Republic (Group L) 2. Albania (Group K) 3. Republic of Ireland (Group F) 2. Clinched 2nd if Don't Win Group (7) 1. Group A: Slovakia (Germany) 2. Group B: Kosovo (Switzerland) 3. Group C: Scotland (Denmark) 4. Group E: Turkey (Spain) 5. Group G: Poland (Netherlands) 6. Group H: Bosnia Herzegovina (Austria) 7. Group I: Italy (Norway) 3. 2nd/3rd Undecided (2) 1. Group D: Ukraine v Iceland: Ukr must win 2. Group J: Wales v North Macedonia: Wales must win to get 2nd, but cannot be eliminated. Wales & North Macedonia are both guaranteed PO spots, via 2nd or NL, so that match really does not matter much. Ukraine v Iceland, on the other hand, the 3rd place team is eliminated. II. Nation's League Places/Non Top 2 (4) A. Clinched (3) 1. Romania (Group H 3rd) 2. Sweden (Group B 4th/3rd) 3. Northern Ireland (Group A 3rd) B. Can finish 1st/2nd/3rd, but guaranteed a PO spot via NL even if 3rd (1) 1. North Macedonia/Wales (Group J)
It surely can. You can have more stoppage in stoppage. A goal, an injury, more time wasting, VAR stoppage, pitch invasion, power outage, weather stoppage. This match went to 90+7 as the goal meant more stoppage. There is no set limit. The the 5 actual minutes of play have to happen. It could take 5 minutes. It could take all day. That's why it is a MINIMUM of 5. Good announcers will say it, lazy/crappy ones won't.
It's whatever the ref decides.....since nothing related to time-keeping in soccer is precise, nobody except the ref knows how much time remains to be played. The numbers put up on the board at 45'/90' are guidelines for the fans, not precise measurements.
I was thinking if it was over 5:59 why didn't they show at least 6 minutes of additional time, assuming no time was accrued during the initially added time.
Actually, both "added time" and "stoppage time" are correct terms to refer to the extra time added at the end of a football game. Also good is "injury time". However, the original post was "extra time", and that term could lead to confusion.
Fair. I prefer stoppage, though, as it tends to prevent the type of confusion demonstrated above. But I deserved it.
Ukraine into UEFA POs. I. Intercontinental PO's: Clinched (2) Playoff updates (Ranks) 1. OFC (1): New Caledonia (150) 2. CONMEBOL (1): Bolivia (76) II. Intercontinental PO's: Undecided (4) 3. The seeding for the UEFA playoffs is starting to shape up.... Italy (9), Turkey (26), and Ukraine (27) are almost certain to be seeded. The fourth seeded team could be either Denmark (20), Poland (33), or Wales (34). It's conceivably possible that Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Northern Ireland could all end up in the same path!
