Easy. It's a 'contemporary update' of an imperfect, but fun and quirky old movie from another time and place (in every sense of the word). It's even, absolutely shamelessly, got the same title as the original - though it's fidelity to the original is dubious to say the least, as you can see for yourself by reading this here synopsis. Why even bother making this, if they're just gonna play it up for the Fast And Furious crowd, a la the trailers I've seen? It doesn't look fun. It doesn't look like a homage. Benny Hill and Noel Coward are dead. Mark Wahlberg couldn't carry Michael Caine's jock, never mind blowing the bloody doors off. Even the promise of Charlize Theron couldn't get me to buy a ticket to this. Yecch. Give me the original... and make this cluster#### go away.
I'm looking forward to it. Jason Statham Mos Def Charlize Theron Mark Wahlberg Seth Green Donald Sutherland Ed Norton
Movies I have no interest in seeing: X-2 Bruce Almighty Hulk The In Laws Pirates of the Carribbean Daddy Day Care Lizzie McGuire Anger Management 2 Fast 2furious Dumb and dumberer Charlie's Angels 2 Lara Croft 2 Basically, it's Matrix reloaded and Terminator 3. Other than that, mostly dreck. I agree with Mike, any would be thriller/car movie featuring a rapper gets the gasface.
I have no interest in seeing Matrix Reloaded or Bruce Almighty. I did go see X2 though (on opening day) and it was amazing. I never even saw the first one.
The thing that bugs me most about "The Italian Job" is the constant pimping of those stupid Mini cars.
Well I can say that I dont care for 95% of the movies out there, the 5% being the Matrix, and X2. So add every other movie to the list. One movie I WOULD have been interested in but got totally butchered is the HULK.
I can't believe I ************ing agree with Michael K. What the hell is the world coming to? Is the movie industry so completely devoid of originality that they have to keep remaking these movies and not really adding anything to the party except a bit of new CG gimmickry and a hot new soundtrack, that face it is never really that good.
Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer I didn't know there was an original version of this movie until I read this thread.
> Is the movie industry so completely devoid of > originality that they have to keep remaking these > movies Here are the big movies of the spring and summer, according to my local newspaper. Doesn't look good for Hollywood originality. (Movies from books I kept seperate as that has always been a common source for movies.) This is only off the top of my head, so I may have missed some. Matrix Reloaded - sequel 2 Fast 2furious - sequel Dumb and dumberer - sequel Charlie's Angels 2 - sequel Lara Croft 2 - sequel T3 - sequel X-2 - sequel and derived from comic book Hulk - from comic book The In Laws - remake Italian Job - remake Pirates of the Carribbean - based on the Disney ride Lizzie McGuire - from current TV series Sinbad - cliché story Seabiscuit - popular book Daddy Day Care - original Anger Management - original Finding Nemo - original Hollywood Homicide - original Matchstick Men - original American Spendor - original
Re: Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer Well, if you've seen the original, you would understand the pimping of the Mini, since it was an integral part of the original Italian Job too. In "Austin Powers in Goldmember", you might have noticed that the Mini was heavily featured. There's a good reason for this. Mike Meyers based Austin Powers on the Harry Palmer character that Michael Caine played in the 60s, so he had Caine appear on "Goldmember" as a tribute. And he had the Mini on there because of Caine's role in the original Italian Job. As for movies I'm actually interested in: Matrix: Reloaded - already seen X2 Laurel Canyon Owning Mahowny The Dancer Upstairs I think that's it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer I saw this last week & it was normal in every sense of the word. I mean, it wasn't painful to watch, but it wasn't very memorable, either. I think the best part of this film was identifiying all the music that played during the film (Clinic, Baxter Dury, T. Rex, etc.). Saw the trailer. Looks horrible.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer Hmmm. We'll see. I usually like Frances McDormand. I think "The Dancer Upstairs" might be one of those movies I want to like, but end up being disappointed. Either way, I do want to catch it though. Seriously, I'm looking at all the trailers here and there is very little this summer that I'm going nuts over. Though I'm looking forward to seeing The Man Without A Past, recommended by TheSlipperyOne.
Hulk looks like an utter and total piece of shit. Also: 2 Fast 2 Furious Charlie's Angels 2 X2 Dumb and Dumberer Lara Croft 2 and pretty much any movie being released between now and Labor Day - especially that stupid Pixar shite that's coming out with the stoner/surfer turtle. - Stoner/surfer has been done to death! (It was funny when Spicoli or Bill and Ted did it. Hell, even the stoner Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle was semi-bearable.) Please, no more! America's children are dumb enough already.
I dunno. as someone with agirlfriend that is a cartoon master/fan/guru-ess , i have come to realize that pretty much anyhtink pixar does ends up being pretty good. And, as for the matrix, i dont really know how "unoriginal" you could call it. its probabaly the most plot-deep action movie ever, and the second one even surpasses the first, in my opinion. but yeah, ive noticed sequels are in.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer I like Frances McDormand too, so that's probably why I saw it. Actually, it showed here in Portland at the film festival and was really popular, so I guess I expected more out of it than I got. Also looking forward to Kaurismaki's "The Man Without a Past" here. What about some of the other indies that are out/just out/will be out, such as Neil LaBute's new film, "The Shape of Things". Also, the film that won the Oscar for best foreign film, "Nowhere in Africa" is probably the best film I've seen all year. Magnificent. Uplifting & depressing at the same time, not to mention that Julianne Kohler (from Aimee & Jaguar)... *rowr!
Coming in November 2004: "T4: Stealing Sacramento". I hadn't paid much attention to the Italian Job hype but anything with Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Ed Norton, and Seth Green is worth seeing. Charlize is hot as fuck, Green is a funny bastard, and Norton and Statham have always been good in everything I've seen them in.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer I wish I caught it in the theater but it's headed for video release soon, it seems. I thought about seeing The Shape Of Things but I read the ho-hum review on The Onion AV Club so I didn't But then again, if The Onion doesn't completely tear a film apart, it's usually a good sign... Just watched the trailer for Nowhere in Africa. Not bad. With all the crap that's going to be out, this might be my summer of indies and foreign films. So you haven't seen The Transporter, I take it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: #1 Movie I Couldn't Possibly Care Less About Seeing This Summer it's been on sundance and or ifc already
I would stop watching movies based on the actors involved. For most great movies the actors are the least integral part of the pie and if you watch movies based on actors you are in for alot of disappointment.
the hulk. it looks worse than spiderman which is easily one of the worst 10 movies ever made. along with the matrix: reloaded, but that's another thread altogether. also on finding nemo: that turtle did look pretty cliche. but pixar never puts out bad movies. i bet money it's gonna rock.
