    some interesting stuff on how new stadiums aren't really soccer-specific at all, and how business and money will continue to trump what is best for the sporting interests/needs.

    ----------
    Last summer, the Galaxy had hoped to use the arrival of David Beckham as a springboard out of mediocrity. Instead, when it returned from two weeks away for the X Games, it tied once and lost three times, its season heading into a freefall of injuries and poor play, which ended with it missing the playoffs.

    "You just kind of look at it at the beginning of the season that it's going to suck, you're going to be gone all of August, but at least you get to prepare for it," Galaxy forward Landon Donovan said. "We were at a point where we were going back and forth and back and forth between games and it killed us."

    Chivas had the opposite problem. It had three weeks without a game last year, so maintaining sharpness was an issue. Then when the teams finally returned home, they played on a re-sodded field that looked like an Amish quilt.

    "For all the positives that being part of the AEG family brings us, there are certainly challenges also," said Alexi Lalas, president of the Galaxy, which is owned by AEG. "The fact that the X Games come in here and cause us to go on the road, it's a challenge. It's not perfect. But the reality is we are also a business and this stadium is also a business.

    "Until we're at a point where we have the amount of events, in terms of soccer, and more importantly, the amount of revenue generation that teams around the world have, we're going to have to be patient and deal with it."

    DaMarcus - Yes
    Jamar - No

    I like the intent, but that is way off. The writing/grammar is kinda shoddy too.

    Philly is already referring to their newly financed stadium plan in Chester as a "multi-use sports and entertainment facility."

    http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/01-31-2008/0004747137&EDATE=

    -----------
    Construction on Phase I of Rivertown at Chester is expected to start
    later this year. When completed in late 2010, the new development will
    feature:

    -- A professional, 20,000-seat, multi-use sports and entertainment
    facility;

    -- Two office buildings offering approximately 335,000 square feet;

    -- A 200,000-square-foot exposition center;

    -- More than 22,000 square feet of retail space;

    -- A 1,350-space parking garage;

    -- 25 apartment units;

    -- 186 townhouse units;

    -- A courtyard; and

    -- A riverwalk and boat slips.

    The sports facility, for which $25 million of the $47 million is
    pledged, would be ready in time for the 2010 professional soccer season if
    Chester is awarded the soccer franchise for which it is competing. The
    project is expected to create at least 360 full-time jobs.

    The city donated the 50-acre site and Delaware County is planning to
    float a $30 million bond using gaming revenues, if the city secures a
    soccer franchise. Service on the bond would be supported by the county's
    share of gaming funds dedicated to economic development.

    Probably means concerts and other sporting events like high school football.
    Most other SSS are also "multi-use" It makes it easier to convince people than just saying you are building a soccer stadium.

    exactly.

    but the phrase "soccer specific stadium" or "SSS" is rather inaccurate and misleading. and it incorrectly implies that these are soccer only venues.

    having "multi-use" in the description is more accurate and appropriate (for the types of stadiums that are being built for MLS teams).

    I don't think it was deliberately misleading. I think initially the idea was also based on having fields of the minimum dimensions that would allow a Fifa-sanctioned game to be held.

    And they were built specifically for MLS teams, but not exclusively for them. SES would be a misleading term. SSS is not.
