For help up front, Yallop also is looking at McKinley Tennyson and Brian Ching, both of whom are training with the Earthquakes this week. Tennyson led the A-League in scoring last year with 18 goals and six assists for Portland. Ching played for Seattle and joined Tennyson on the A-League's first team. LA-rejects or not, they can both play by all accounts. Anyone ever read the thread, "The Mysterious Case of McKinley Tennyson"? Good stuff, mate.
I'm still holding out hope that we will see a discovery player from Frank's trip abroad this year. After all he must have been doing something besides a team sponsored pub crawl!
No, I haven't seen that thread. Could you provide a link? Tennyson got rave reviews in the A-League last season, and his Seattle Sounders team tore up the regular season. There's definitely some potential there, but I am slightly disturbed by our team becoming the dumping ground for Galaxy rejects. Well, at least we're not taking DC United rejects...
Frankly, I don't care where they come from as long as they fit into our system and produce. It could be that their prior MLS experiences either didn't provide them with sufficient opportunity to prove themselves or maybe their game hadn't matured enough by that time. They are worth a look.
Mr B, was that the hilarous thread on the Crew board about Tennyson's adventures, so to speak, in Europe and elsewhere, that was one of the all-time greatest threads. But, Tennyson's also received chances before in MLS, with Columbus and LA (I think) and hasn't been able to capitalize. Brian Ching is from hawai'i, correct? Tony
Yup, Ching is of Hawaiian descent. And yes, that's the thread I was referring to. Too bad I don't have it bookmarked because it seems like there have been many twists and turns since I read it a year or two ago.
Tennyson never played or practised a minute with Columbus. He tried his hand in Europe instead. He then came back to the States and practised with LA before signing with the Portland Timbers (where as we've already read he tore it up, Richter Boy actually saw him play a few times and can comment more) then went to LA to provide depth on their bench at the end of the season after the A-League season was over. I wouldn't call Tennyson a reject. In fact I think he would do quite well with the Quakes and would be a great signing.
I witnessed the rebirth of Tennyson last season in Portland and see no reason why he couldn't contribute in MLS. He is big, strong and can finish. The one knock on him is that he doesn't always come to play. It took him awhile to adjust to the Timbers system but once he did he went on a tear, averaging almost two goals a game. He also is a likable fellow for what it is worth. For selfish reasons I'd love to see him back in Portland. Ching is also a good player. He is a very hard worker and can be a thorn in the side of an oppononent. He essentially was the driving force behind a Seattle team that tore through the A-league last season. I hope he is able to stick with San Jose so we don't have to see him again. They might both be A-league players, but in my opinion they can suceed at MLS under the right circumstances.
I hereby am annointing myself the first poster to refer to them as "MK-Ten" and "Bri-Chi". All of you are hereby required to use these nicknames!
Say, there's a marketing idea...with every season ticket a team sponsored pub crawl. Imua Brian Ching (even though he went to Iolani and not Kamehameha...or even HBA).
Actually Tennyson goes by the nickname of "Kei" - pronounced "key." Whenever he scored last season he would rush over in front of the supporters section behind the goal and we would sing the following to the tune of O' Christmas Tree: O' Tennyson, O' Tennyson He'll score on you again and again He'll score on you because you s*ck He'll score on you you muther*************** O' Tennyson, O' Tennyson He'll score on you again and again
I got this article and read it immeditly when arriving to school. I don't know, the author kind of reassured me that we will have a good team. TRANSFORM MARI
I've been saying all along that as long as the Earthquakes retain Ekelund and Mulrooney and have no other major defections, that they'll still be a good team in 2003.       And it's hilarious to read all these lineup predictions for opening day... no one here seems to realize that the Quakes are planning on bringing in at least one or two new players before the beginning of the season (perhaps Frankie Hejduk?)!       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Having Ekelund and Mulrooney back is great news, but I'm still concerned. It seems like good players on a team make the great players seem stellar, but novice/sucky players on a team make the the great players seem mediocre. I recall when we were loaned Giovanni Savarese (August 2000) for the remainder of the season and I don't think he scored a single stinking goal. Another example: the much maligned Khodadad Azizi, whatever his faults, did know how to send a great ball forward, but they were always wasted opportunities because we didn't have the finishers. Maybe I'm just adopting the traditional Quake fan preseason despair, but I'm still pessimistic about our prospects this year.
I won't be either optimistic or pessimistic until the Earthquakes finally have a pretty set lineup going into the preseason (or perhaps at some point into the preseason).       Again, the Quakes will most likely add one or two more players to the team before all is said and done, and one or two players can make a ton of difference (ala Donovan in SJ, Ruiz in LA, Twellman in NE, etc.)!       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
bpc, maybe you missed it, but the Quakes have a new coach now. Comparing anything post 2000 Quakes to the 2000 version is a big dis-service to FY. If the Quakes had Donovan in 2000, he'd probably be in the A-league regaining his confidence right now.
Wait up !! Up until last week I thought we still had Mckinley Tennyson. As for Ching.. well he was dumped off due to lack of ability. If San jose should keep any of the 4 Ex-Gals Tennyson is the best one probably. Mullan, Ching, Waibel are all pretty mediocre.
keep Ching and give back Tennyson Really, take Brian Ching! We need Tennyson back here in Portland. Please dear God give us back Tennyson!
