http://www.1460thefan.com/tf.php?story=dispatch/news/sports03/jan03/1597700.html Strangest thing off this is to see that Gary Berry (yeah, that guy that played for the Buckeyes football team) is trying out for the Crew!
Yeah there was an article about that last year in the Dispatch. The article talked about his concusion problem that forced him out of Green Bay and how he was thinking about training for soccer because he loved the sport and always enjoyed playing. He said he was a defender, CB and RB when he was young. It's good to see him get active again.
At least he's trying out for the team. I remember an article in 'The Other Paper' a while ago about a nut-job that repeatably tried out for the Crew. He was eventually arrested for stalking. Jimmy sounded quite relieved that he didn't have to deal with him anymore!
Gary isn't going to help the defense much. He couldn't tackle well at OSU doubt he will for the Crew.
Wasn't Garry Berry a friend of Stern John. I remember reading something about John hanging out with someone from the OSU secondary. I don't remember for sure if it was Berry. I do remember seeing Gary Berry at a Crew game back in the first year for CCS. I wonder if having some cross-over athletes would be good for the sport. Having Berry on the roster adds a name that is familiar to people who haven't followed the team. Having been a starter at OSU, Berry has had plenty of practice being in the Columbus media. The league seems to try to make a big deal out of the fact that Jay Heaps played basketball at Duke. Steelers RB Amos Zeroeue didn't play H.S. football until his senior year. Before that, he was a soccer player. When he left WVU he said he'd try to go back to soccer if his NFL career didn't work out. He's doing well for the Steelers, so I don't think we'll see that happen now. It obviously going to be very difficult for Berry to make the transition. He's just got too much less experience than the competition. I'd like to see it happen though. On the other hand, I can hear the soccer-bashers now. He wasn't good enough for the NFL, but he can do O.K. at a "easy" sport like soccer.
I graduated from highschool and played some sports with him. He was a very gifted well rounded athlete. I also saw him play a bit of soccer from time to time. Thought he was better at soccer than football. Also it's not that he wasn't good enough to play in the NFL. It's that he received a life threating injury while he was with Green Bay
So having this injury won't affect his play on the soccer field, but it does on the football field? If it was a head injury, what's heading a ball going to do to him?
YITBOS> that "stalker" ended up being a cross dresser who killed some other cross dresser with a samaurai sword or some sh!t. the article chronicling his attempts to 'try out' for the crew was quite humorous. even the murder part. i mean seriously, any story about two fags playing crouching tiger, hidden girbal with jim smiths name involved is worth its weight in news print. god bless the gay community in columbus.... anyhoo, gary berry may run real fast and kick the ball real hard but a soccer player does not that make.. woah, kinda sound like yoda there.....
I remember that. I didn't know the Crew was connected. Actually, that's pretty freaky considering we've connected homocidal cross-dressing stalkers with the Columbus Crew
Krypto might have gotten it rught! Good article on Berry in today's Dispatch. Mentions him possibly doing an A-League or PDL stint. Looks slim on your bet Zak, sorry. Thanks for the insight on Martino & Buddle, LUD. I wondered why they weren't getting some shot in these developmental Nats games. Glad the Crew's new youth movement may allow us to get some free Nats experience (Plus xtra noncap $s for the players).
