    Midwest, the real one.
    ----------------------------------------------
After one season -- in which they won the NASL championship -- the Spurs folded and Rogers was off to his next soccer adventure. In fact, Rogers, now retired, has seen so much in his more than four decades as a coach that he's now writing a book on coaching soccer in the Third World.

"I've included a chapter on the United States," Rogers said.
    -------------------------------------------
Something tells me he wrote the whole book just to get that line in there.

A quote from Beau Dure's story..

"Stokes may start on a thin United defense"....

    Thin? Are you kidding me?

    Ryan Nelsen
    Mike Petke
    Galin Ivanov
    Brandon Prideaux
    Milton Reyes
    David Stokes

    I'd hardly call that thin....

Hey, everyone's got their opinions. I don't see any of the draft picks starting right away, but with injuries you never know. Besides, is Ivanov a done deal yet?

We hear it's signed, but not yet announced... but with MLS, I guess you never know.

Not many picks have an automatic route, but Todd Dunivant is the exception. He should step right into Barrett's shoes. I also expect to see Diego Walsh on the field right away.

plus, isn't nelson possibly being moved to d-mid? in that case stokes would definitely help shore up the d-line.

has barrett signed with the danish team for sure yet? is his trial going well?

AGF fans are saying that it's been announced that once Barret contacts his lawyer about the terms of the deal then it's done. So yes, it's almost a lock that Barret will be playing in Denmark next season.

Can he take the spot from Craig Waibel?

I think that Waibel is more likely to stay on the right. Assuming Barrett goes (not done yet, FlashMan, though it seems likely), Dunivant's main competition would be from Corrales and Agoos. However, they're both better suited to other positions.

Probably, but there's also a good chance we'll be going to a 3-5-2, with four starter-types ahead of Stokes for the three spots (Reyes, Petke, Ivanov, Prideaux).

Yes, the game plan right now is moving Nelsen to d-mid with Ivanov playing central defense flanked by Petke (left) and Reyes (Right)..

Even with the move of Nelsen to d-mid, and with United undoubtedly moving to a 3-5-2 formation, that still leaves Brandon Prideaux and David Stokes for depth..

My problem was the initial insistence that United has a thin defense, which they most certainly don't...

I don't disagree that Stokes will get playing time, as a matter of fact, I hope he plays a lot....

Thought I'd read that Reyes would get some time up at midfield as well. Looking at the roster, that makes little sense, but you never know what Hudson's up to. I remember the Fusion fielding a team that started nine guys I'd classify as midfielders, and it worked out just fine.

In any case, I make no assumptions about long-rumored signings from overseas (A) actually showing up or (B) actually knowing how to play. (Carlos Semedo, anyone?)

I also thought Prideaux had a rough go of it last year. Bottom line is that a couple of these guys were around last year along with Eddie Pope, and they still needed Rimando to keep them competitive. I think Petke for Pope is a downgrade in value. And they lost McKinley, which takes out another option.

Of course, there aren't enough disclaimers you can put on this. Ivanov could turn out to be great, and Hudson could put in a system in which Prideaux and Reyes start on the back line and thrive. Or some guy who played for the Wilmington Hammerheads last year could pop up into the picture. (I'm still convinced the MetroStars are going to come up with a starter from the third division of the New Jersey Champions League this year.)

Yeah once I read that I realized that maybe all the people on BigSoccer weren't crazy after all, maybe there really is a conspiracy. Even the Brits think so.

He's just upset that DC had the biggest goal differential in the league last year (31 GF and 40 GA). Other than that, he's way off base.
