19,315 watch Barcelona (of Ecuador) and Atlético Naciónal (of Colombia) play the opening match of Torneo de las Americas in Miami's Orange Bowl. The game started at 7:00 p.m. It was scheduled long before the U.S. Canada game.

I don't think McHead is coming back. He's doing so well he should be offered a deal to stay at least as a sub. If that happens it makes signing Dante Washington that much more a priority. Signing Heiduk would be good for a team that needs some help on D.

    So quiet...

Just in case you may not have noticed, that's a fairly long Grahame Jones column analyzing the Galaxy's SuperDraft. Where are all the usual knee-jerk screeds about his MLS bashing or Euro snobbery or whatnot? :D

good call anderson-- I rarely have a problem with what Jones writes (it's really more what he overlooks that bothers me), so give credit for an article with rare analysis of MLS.

    From the McBride article:
"The suspended young superstar was hardly missed as McBride filled the gap like a New York deli sandwich."

Ugh. They get paid to write this stuff?

    Re: So quiet...

Fair enough - Jones' did his job - this time. However, we never got from him any pre-draft analysis of what the team might need, might be looking for, etc. I compare the LAT coverage of LAG with that the Washington Post gives to DCU, and LAT usually comes up as a very pale second.

Most of what Jones writes is simply a re-write of what we all saw on the net the day before, with little or no analysis of his own. To say nothing of his doing any actual reporting. Then he will come out with the occasional sneering blast where he lets us know that everything that happens in the US is inferior to his preferred EPL. MAybe true, but sort of pointless after you have read it the first time.

I do think he is a sophisticated observer, and while I would not expect to always agree with what he says, I would like to see his commentary. Instead, I am constantly disappointed by his failure to do anything other than regurgitate wire service stories. If he really paid attention to the LAG enough to comment on them knowledgeably, his critiques would be worth a read. But, you would be hard pressed to find an analytical article from him like this one more than once every two-three months.

    Besides, he's a wanker.

Well, he could have said "McBride was all over a loose ball like a mutton vindaloo through a lager lout's colon."

Two days after the draft...wow. Yes, I'll say it was a nice piece from him...for a change.
