I love this quote re: Mama:

Reports last month in the US media suggested that the striker had been sacked by the club, which proved to be false. However, a change of manager at Al Ahli has seen the departure of Diallo, effective today.

So he wasn't sacked, he just had to leave immediately.....

Former New England manager Fernando Clavijo stated that he had helped the Revs begin their road to improvement, before being replaced by Steve Nicol as head coach, but wasn't given the opportunity to see the job through.

News Flash FC - if you had stayed, there wouldn't have been anything to see through. You were leading them nowhere with your stupid formations and decisions.

There's no reason to be taking shots at FC. Yeah, it didn't work out for him here, but the guy worked his *ss off to make us a better team, and he did. Compare the talent on the roster in May of 2002 to the talent that was on the roster when he was hired - there IS no comparison.

That may be true, Mike, but the team simply wasn't playing for him. Hell, it took Nicol long enough to get the horses to jump through the hoops as it was, but I don't think anyone thinks that the team could have made their late season surge if Clavijo was still in charge.

Fernando was a good guy, but he does come across here as kinda whiny, that he "wasn't given the chance" when he built a decent team in 2000 and took them backwards the following year. It was pretty well known, even among the most casual fans, that if the team was struggling early on, Clavijo would be replaced by Nicol, which is exactly what happened.

I wish him well, and hope he gets another coaching job somewhere in better circumstances, but let's not rewrite history.

I don't disagree. The night of that Colorado game that got him fired, I came on these boards and said it was time for a chance because his team essentially rolled over like dogs on him.
Again, I agree. But I also think it's natural for anyone in FC's position that has even the slightest bit of pride to believe that he would have turned things around if he had been given another few weeks, or whatever.

Fortunately there are good Chemo treatments that can keep the keep in remission after a marrow transplant. They haven't come up with a cure yet but some of my friends in the research community tell me there are some promising treatments coming on line that might just improve the possibility of effecting cures

Awful news. No matter what you may think of him as a coach/player, it's been my experience that Fernando Clavijo is as nice a person as you will ever meet in American soccer.

That seems to be the universal opinion. I've always liked Fernando and give him the lion's share of the credit for making the Revs a respectable team for the first time.

    Best wishes Fernando.

I'll never forget he played a big role in one of only 5 US victories in WC finals in my lifetime.
