Yesterday, on the flight to Cleveland, amidst the tragedies in France and Turkey, I came across a story about a number of small vehicles headed south. I knew what it was. Those two for one, got change for a quarter crack whores gathered in the projects, got in their shopping carts full of cans, and are rolling on down. This is the real rivalry. Made on the pitch, not the highway. The first in the MLS. The Brimstone Cup. Looking at the dismal result in Seattle, those of us who have been around for many years might be forgiven for thinking the annual summer collapse is upon us. Of course, Jeffries and Hyndman managed to avoid this summer collapse, by starting it on opening day. Not today. Just not today. Winning is not enough. Humiliation should be the only criteria for success. Delenda est Chicago! Scorched earth! Scorched earth! Dead but dreaming, Scipio Diabolus, vox fatum. Contra. 9TSixer, forever in horns.
Long time Scipio. Got to hold the Brimstone Cup for a moment yesterday. Nice that it's back home. The rivalry is so muted now few but us old timers remember when it was the most heated in MLS.
Gone are the days of hating on Whitfield, Brown, Stoichkov, Kovalenko, Razov, Wolff, Armas....oh how the mighty have fallen.
Well, I'm glad the guy who scored on us was Arturo Alvarez. Nothing Jesse could do with that one. Dumb foul by Atiba Harris, who otherwise had a fine game. Fabian Castillo had a great game, as did Mauro Diaz.
Well, there was nothing he could've done once it got past the "wall." Unlike his teammates in the wall, Tesho didn't jump more than an inch, if at all, and the ball sailed right over his head and into the net.
I agree Tesho didn't move much, but the problem was the rest of the wall moved to Jesse's left creating the gap the ball went through. Alvarez's shot went to the left of Tesho's head (looking out from our goal). If the rest of the wall hadn't moved, the wall would have done its job. All the wall has to do is stand there if it's set up properly (which this wall was until 3/4 of it moved). What you really don't want the wall to do is open up gaps - between players, between feet, between feet and the ground.
