Thanks. I didn't know that. I am pretty active in the Philippine men's national football forum but didn't know there was a women's one. Dernhelm who has been in the men's board never informed me.

I will add that tryout post in that thread as well although I initially posted it in the US College Women's forum since that is where the PFF was looking for players to add to the national team as they have done successfully in the past.

In fact 2 of those players Sarina Bolden and Quinley Quezada will play in Japan's first women's professional football league as the country's ASEAN players in the upcoming WE (Women Empowerment) League while others have gone on to play in European leagues professionally.

[IMG] South Korea: The WK-League champions are Incheon Red Angels for the 9th season in succession! All the more impressive, given their strong title challengers in the past 4 years. Again they won a close final on aggregate, against Gyeongju KHNP.

Will it be 10 in a row? Incheon aren't the unstoppable force they were (Gyeongju have better head-to-head scores in recent years), but an interesting development is this champion team's All-Korean starting 11. Earlier, Incheon often relied on some goalscorers from abroad, above all Brazil's Bia (Beatriz).

[IMG] China: New coach after a bad Olympics for the Steel Roses. At the Tokyo Games, Jia Xiuquan tested out the youth, but he paid with his job for 3 spectacularly poor results there. From the Managerial Merry-Go-Round:

Shui Qingxia was herself an Olympic silver medallist when she was playing for China in 1996.

China Women's Super League - a very close season unfolded from May to the November playoffs, all taking place in the southern city of Yunnan.

With goals from Zambia's Barbra Banda, Shanghai Shengli finished 3rd overall. The former champion team Jiangsu, with an all-Chinese squad, had been the top club in the playoff round robin, going into the championship final, but Jiangsu ended as the runners-up.

It was Wuhan who managed to retain the title on 30 November, their second championship - Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga got 9 goals in their first 5 games of the year, but in the final the matchwinner was Wang Shuang, scoring both goals, and capping a fine year for her:

    Nope.

Also, some inter-continental moves in 2021 - two longtime players of Shanghai Shengli signed in the UK, Tang Jiali (Tottenham, a season loan) and Shen Mengyu (Celtic). - "Tang and Shen become first Chinese women to join British clubs [as professionals]" - (Reuters)

[IMG] Vietnam: The 6-month Covid delay led to the leanest season ever, but it was held, at the end of 2021.

The national championship, Cup Thai Son Bac, became a single round robin, reduced from 9 teams to 5 by some cities dropping their second team. The National Youth Football Centre in Hanoi hosted all the matches, and Hanoi led the league by only +1 goal, before the final match round - Ho Chi Minh City needed to beat them to win the league, and HCM did get the win. Their captain Huynh Nhu was the league's top goalscorer (9) and won player of the season. This result makes a historic 10 titles for both of those clubs now.

    Ho Chi Minh City 2 - 0 Hanoi - (Huynh Nhu 17', 55')

Women's Asian Cup 2022: All in all, a remarkable tournament - time will tell if it's a real watershed, but especially with that final week, it feels like so much has changed: India hosted its first Asian Cup; South Korea finally fulfil their potential then let the trophy slip; Philippines and Vietnam qualify for their first senior football World Cup; Nadeshiko's normally-unflappable fans are annoyed; (actually, that isn't such a change). And of course, China; how do you do it? If anyone is still avoiding finding out the final's final score, please look away now.

[IMG] Taiwan/Chinese Taipei had an agonizing Asian Cup, 1 goal short of qualifying for the World Cup, but will enter the inter-continental playoff in Feb 2023.

The Mulan League had played on without lockdowns in Apr/May 2020, but it was different in 2021: kickoff on 10 April, all matches were suspended from 1 May to 21 November when it returned (all streamed on CTFA Youtube), and it completed the season on Christmas Day 2021.

The shortened format wasn't kind to the defending champs, Hualien (in red). Heading towards the title with 3 games to go, they were handed a late loss by Kaohsiung Sunny Bank (the bank with no curtains), as the 3rd-placed green machine kept a clean sheet, thanks to GK Chen Qiao Lun, and a good header by Minori Wakabayashi made it 1-0.

Hualien could still have retained the title if they'd had a several-goal win on the last day, 25 December, but instead Santa delivered them a floating ball of doom into their net, and Hang Yuan FC ensured 4th place. Champions are Taichung Blue Whale, for the 4th time, with their victory on the final matchday:

South Korea, Asian football history and the WK-League came under the microscope in a documentary on JTBC TV in December 2021.

Historic events in 1990 and 2003 were shown in an interview with Lee Myung-hwa 이명화, a fencer turned footballer, who played for the first official women's team of South Korea. They had a painful debut, a 13-1 loss to Japan at home, followed by the Asian Games 1990: 7- and 8-goal defeats, before a win 1-0 against the other strugglers Hong Kong. But they can, at least, say they were at the first edition of that tournament. China won the gold medal.

2003, a different world: S Korea beat Japan 1-0, and won 3rd place in the Asian Championship. "Lee Myung-hwa recalled that she was outnumbered because of our player's dismissal in the first 5 minutes of the second half and said, 'I never thought 40 minutes was that long. My friends like Song Ju-hee and [the goalscorer] Hwang In-sun played a lot. It was a game!', she recalled the touching memories of that day." - (Star OhMyNews / Archive)

As any fool know, "women v men" in football is the most boring troll-feeding topic, unless the women win, then it becomes the best post ever and deserves at least 40 reps

Yeo Min-ji's header was enough to keep the lead through the 2nd half to full time - Gyeongju 1, Avengers 0! ...Those guys actually aren't a top K-League team (who knew?) but they are big sport stars, just not in soccer! Korean gold medallists of basketball, swimming, rugby, martial arts, winter sports and others team up against the pros, in the inspiring football TV series, We Must Unite to Kick. Good advice for us all.

SEA Games 2022: Vietnam and Thailand will be seeded 1st in South-East Asia when the two former champions seek another final in May in the festival of sport, after a year's delay. Interesting situation with the other entrants - mostly positive, but one big negative.

We'll likely see more teams than the 6 from last time, but Malaysia won't be there: the FAM withdrew, said they weren't competitive (after 5-goal losses in 2019), and with that attitude at the federation, they never will be. Conversely, some debutants and teams with little hope of a medal will be in Vietnam to play. Among the medal hopefuls, Myanmar have been training for 2 months, and the Philippines have 2 practice matches vs Fiji.

It is nice to read news about other the other teams in the SEA Games.

The Philippine team just started training last week in Australia and are scheduled to face Fiji in a series of friendlies on April 7th and 11th.
It would have been nice if the Filipinas scheduled a game against a higher ranked Oceania team like New Zealand instead but that team already has a match against Australia on the same match dates.

Their coaching staff has been bolstered with the addition of highly regarded Young Matilda's(Australia national girl's team) coach Stevan Antonic who was a key figure in the YM (Young Matildas) and FM (Future Matildas) program.

“I would like to wish all the Staff and Players I had the pleasure to work with in YM (Young Matildas) and FM (Future Matildas) all the best moving forward in what is shaping up to be a big year for both programs,” he said.

“I can now confirm that I have accepted the position of Performance Analyst for the Philippine Women's National Team.

“Blessed to be given the opportunity and look forward to working with the PFF and PWNT staff and players on the road to the World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.”

He joins Stajcic, Nahuel Arrarte and Luca Tonetti as they prepare the Philippines for their first ever World Cup adventure.

Cambodia's first official internationals were a fun time, a huge win vs Timor-Leste, then huge losses to the top AFF teams. Three years later, they're back, in their first SEA Games. "Cambodia also has a regular Women’s League, where the best female players in the Kingdom play. [Including] Boeung Ket FC, Phnom Penh Crown FC, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC and NagaWorld FC. The top players from the Women’s League are expected to form the nucleus of the national team."

Phnom Penh have just won the 2021/22 "Crown", their first title AFAIK, with a great record of W13, L1, and a key win at last year's finalists Svay Rieng:

Singapore is hosting its first home matches for 4 years, the FAS Tri-Nations Series against Papua New Guinea and the African-affiliated Seychelles. Pretty cool idea, much like their 2018 tournament. The Singaporeans will enter the SEA Games, but hardly played in 2020-2021.

Timor-Leste had its cup final in January, and its third champion in three seasons in the 2021 league: S'Amuser FC were the league winners, but they lost the cup: a first-half hattrick by Elvira Da Silva gave the 4-3 win to SL Benfica (not that one!).

Indonesia were set to enter the SEA Games in 2021, before the Asian Cup strangeness came along. Club football returned for the first time since Covid hit, but only in a massive 10-day extravaganza for every province's team. West Papua hit the top, as they often have, winning 3-1 in the final of the Piala Pertiwi (Motherland Cup) against Bangka Belitung this week.

Because their friendly tour of Spain went so well, Vietnam are doing it again! This time in South Korea. The visiting VN squad will play an international at the Asian Cup finalists along the way, and at "three top women's clubs".

The WK-League is back for its new season, on a new video channel, and it kicked off with 4 of the best in action: Incheon vs Suwon and Hwacheon KSPO vs Gyeongju.

Thai Women's League is back to the future and back for the new season 2565, or if you're using an old calendar, 2022. The format is 8 teams playing home-and-away this time, and then title playoffs - the previous champions, BG Bundit Asia (a.k.a. College of Asian Scholars), are on top early in the season in League 1. Very hard to find any video, for some reason... Their Facebook page only streams a lot of League 2.

Thanks, but we'll see if you're still saying that after my detailed review of Thai League 2. :D

    ...Er... 5 stars!
