Just in from UEFA - here are the changes to the Champions League that will begin in 2024

Following an exhaustive consultation with stakeholders in the game, the UEFA Executive Committee has today in Vienna approved the final format and access list for European club competitions as of the 2024/25 season further to its decision of 19 April 2021 to introduce the so-called “Swiss system”.

The key amendments relate to the reduction from 10 matches to 8 in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League and the change of criteria for the allocation of two of the four additional places in the UEFA Champions League, removing access based on club coefficient. This confirms UEFA’s strong commitment to the principle of open competitions and sporting merit, while recognising the need to protect domestic leagues.

The eight matches of the UEFA Champions League will be played over the ten European weeks foreseen by the decision made in April 2021. The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League will all enjoy one week of calendar exclusivity.

The four additional places created by the increase from 32 to 36 teams in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League will be allocated as follows:

    • One place will go to the club ranked third in the championship of the association in fifth position in the UEFA national association ranking.

    • One place will be awarded to a domestic champion by extending from four to five the number of clubs qualifying via the so-called “Champions Path”.

    • The final two places will go to the associations with the best collective performance by their clubs in the previous season (total number of points obtained divided by the number of participating clubs). Those two associations will earn one place for the club best ranked in the domestic league behind the UEFA Champions League positions. For example, at the end of the current season the two associations adding one club to the Champions League, based on the collective performance of their clubs would be England and the Netherlands.

    • The UEFA Executive Committee once again confirmed that all games before the final will still be played midweek, recognising the importance of the domestic calendar of games across Europe.

Commenting on the decisions, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, said:

“UEFA has clearly shown today that we are fully committed to respecting the fundamental values of sport and to defending the key principle of open competitions, with qualification based on sporting merit, fully in line with the values and solidarity-based European sports model.

“Today’s decisions conclude an extensive consultation process during which we listened to the ideas of fans, players, coaches, national associations, clubs and leagues to name but a few, with the aim to find the best solution for the development and success of European football, both domestically and on the international club stage.

“We are convinced that the format chosen strikes the right balance and that it will improve the competitive balance and generate solid revenues that can be distributed to clubs, leagues and into grassroots football across our continent while increasing the appeal and popularity of our club competitions”

“I am really pleased that it was a unanimous decision of the UEFA Executive Committee, with the European Club Association, European Leagues and National Associations all agreeing with the proposal made. Another proof that European football is more united than ever.

“Qualification will thus remain purely based on sporting performance and the dream to participate will remain for all clubs.”

    Format summary

Taking the total number of teams from 32 to 36 in the UEFA Champions League, the biggest change will see a transformation from the traditional group stage to a single league phase including all participating teams. Every club will now be guaranteed a minimum of 8 league stage games against 8 different opponents (four home games, four away) rather than the previous six matches against three teams, played on a home-and-away basis.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the knockout stage, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition.

Similar format changes will also be applied to the UEFA Europa League (8 matches in the league stage) and UEFA Europa Conference League (6 matches in the league stage) and both will also include 36 teams in the league phase.

So the big leagues get all the extra places.... The gap between 5th and 6th will become entrenched.

The 5th league will get an extra place (just as a few years ago Italy received a 4th without performing likewise and often not surviving the qualifiying round).

This means automatic bonus points and practically creating an artificial gap with whoever is 6th (Portugal, Russia, Netherlands etc.). Portugal was a few years back 5th.

Also the top two leagues in coefficient points during the preceding year will get an extra place. If this were in place for next year that would be England and wait for it........................................................................... The Netherlands!!!

It is a rare exception and a pretext UEFA uses for their agenda.

In all other seasons it was England, Spain, Germany and (once) Italy. Not even France or Portugal.

  12. This is really true?
That sucks. I wonder if we manage to be second again next year. I doubt it, given the pending transfers.
Man, would this really have ment we not only, if we take spot 6, to have 2 direct spots, one qualifier and one bonus direct/qualifier(?) spot?
That, if the qualifier(s) manage to get through, a huge money boost in the Eredivisie.

Intertwining crime and football worries the police

Drug trafficking, a stabbing and domestic violence. Why would you risk your career as a professional football player? "Everywhere that involves a lot of money, such as in professional football, you see criminals and things that cannot bear the light of day," former detective Arno van Leeuwen told Nieuwsuur.

It is a case that has been attracting a lot of attention for a year and a half: the prosecution of well paid football player Quincy Promes. He will soon face court on suspicion of attempted murder of his cousin during a stabbing. The case does not stand alone. Because more professional football players are getting caught up in organized crime.

In the case of Promes, there seems to be more going on than just the stabbing, according to research by Nieuwsuur. In addition to the stabbing, Promes is also suspected of involvement in cocaine smuggling, the smuggling of synthetic drugs to Australia and domestic violence.

These charges are also based, among other things, on intercepted and intercepted encrypted messages from Promes' telephone. This shows that Promes had been in the picture for some time at the time of the stabbing because of drug investigations.

The interweaving of football and serious forms of crime is a cause for concern for the Amsterdam police. Scientific research also shows how easily crime makes its entrance into the world of football.

Former detective Arno van Leeuwen is the driving force behind the approach to undermining. He first focused on industries that are prone to crime, such as car rental companies, real estate agents, catering companies and martial arts galas. Then he threw himself into professional football.

He sees illegal gambling, match fixing and violent incidents among professional football players. It also involves money laundering, says Van Leeuwen. "In any case, we have seen that there are football players who sell expensive watches to criminals and get paid in cash."

But it goes further. "During a dance party in the Maritime Museum, we saw a liquidation of a well-known criminal. Famous professional football players, artists and criminals sat together at a VIP table." In ongoing criminal investigations in recent years, Van Leeuwen has noticed that football players are increasingly in the company of criminals and are therefore in danger.

    Rapper, footballer or drug criminal?
Van Leeuwen has therefore already made contact with Ajax before and will enter into discussions with players, so-called awareness conversations. "We are concerned because there are many shootings and mistaken murders in Amsterdam, things like that. So then we report to Ajax to have a conversation with someone."

Van Leeuwen also spoke with Promes. Before the stabbing happened. But because the case is now before the judiciary, he cannot say anything about it.

It is not surprising that Promes would have come into contact with drug criminals. "In our studies, it is striking that football players often come from disadvantaged neighborhoods in the big cities. If you want to be successful you can become a rapper, or football player or drug criminal - or all three at the same time. That also happens. We see that those football players have a lot of contact with friends from the past, who have really gone astray and picked the wrong path."

    New Generation
Criminologist Spapens participated in a study into the interdependence of crime with football clubs in North Brabant and Zeeland. The conclusions are clear: 30 percent of the clubs surveyed had to deal with criminal influences, often in the form of sponsorship proposals.

"In one case it was a criminal sponsor who then used the canteen for illegal gambling tournaments. We also saw drug trafficking from the canteen. And cases where members of criminal motorcycle gangs used the canteen more or less as a kind of clubhouse or meeting room."

Detective Van Leeuwen is now also concerned about the new generation of football players. "Football schools where owners have been convicted of drug or firearms trafficking. There are, and they now mainly train children."

Makes you wonder how this is in other countries, because honestly and without smug self-complacency, in certainly 180 of the 195 countries in the world this should be worse. Well, at the least the authorities here do not look (entirely) the other way.

You seriously think UEFA will invoke fair play? Ligue 1 is the only group that can do something and I don't think they will as PSG is their moneymaker. Without the club, their league is only on par with the Eredivisie in terms of talent. Ligue 1 has to step up just like La Liga did in giving Barcelona financial limits on what they can do.

The UEFA Europa Conference League was met with mixed feelings when it was announced by UEFA back in 2019. It is expected to run from the 2021 up until the 2024 season. Given the existence of the prestigious Champions League and the Europa League, many wondered why there was a need for another competition. As per UEFA, the aim was to bring more matches for more clubs and more associations.

However, the inaugural edition of the Conference League has exceeded expectations by far. Due to the rather unpredictable nature of the competition and the odds it brings, it has become very much welcome by those who follow football games live in a detailed way.

Seeing how the competition has panned out up till the semifinals as at the time of writing, we can boldy say that the competition has been a positive, especially for the ‘lesser sides’.

In this article, we’ll highlight several ways the UEFA Europa Conference League has done a great deal of good for smaller sides, especially on the continental level. Before we go into that, let’s take a brief look at what the Conference League is all about.

What is the UEFA Europa Conference League?

The tournament will naturally be third-tier of European football competition, just behind the Europa League and Champions League. The sole aim is to give the ‘smaller sides’ an advantage in Europe.

The Conference League has a similar exact format to the Europe League. There will be 32 teams in the group stage, and the new competition will hold 141 matches over 15 match weeks.

In total, 184 teams will have taken part over the course of the season. It also allows good diversity as there would have been at least one team representing each of the 55 associations. Of the total number, 46 of the participating clubs will drop from the UEFA Europa League.

With the above in mind, here is the allocation for the 32 participating teams in the competition.

    • 17 teams from the UEFA Europa Conference League main slots
    • 5 teams from the UEFA Europa Conference League champions slots*
    • 10 teams that would have dropped out from the UEFA Europa League play-offs
Now that we know how the tournament works, let’s take a look at three main ways it will benefit lesser sides.

    Chance to participate in Europe

It is a known fact many clubs dream to play on the continental level but may never be afforded that opportunity. Certain lesser sides are at a disadvantage due to their association’s ranking. This is where the Conference League levels the playing ground. Since it would take account for sides in the lesser regions/rankings on league tables, we can expect to see some brand new sides make their debut in an European competition.

More opportunities to clubs in the lesser regions

It is a known fact that football has been dominated by Western Europe in recent time. If you take a look at the facts, Champions League and Europa League winners over the past years have either come from England, Spain, France, Germany and Italy. Coincidentally, the domestic leagues from these regions make the ‘top five leagues’.

However, the Conference League will give room for countries like Estonia, Albania, Finland, Norway, Belarus, Poland and Ukraine to have a good number of participants in the competition. These regions usually only have a couple representatives combined in the Champions League and Europa League. The quarterfinal of the current edition saw Roma take on Bodo/Glimt in a fixture that would never have happened on normal grounds.

Good money earned for small clubs

While the Conference League might not offer anywhere close to the Champions League and the Europa League, it is still a good avenue for the lesser sides to earn more money from participating cash prizes. More games also means clubs can sell more tickets and make more revenue as well. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the potential amount to be earned by clubs participating in the Conference League.

    Europa Conference League Prize Money

    • Knocked out in first qualifying phase- €150,000
    • Knocked out in second qualifying phase – €350,000
    • Knocked out in third qualifying phase – €550,000
    • Knocked out in Playoff stages – €750,000
    • After advancing to the Group Stage – €2,940,000
    • Winning a Group Stage game- €500,000
    • Prize for a drawn match in the Group Stage – €166,000
    • Finishing top in the Group Stage – €650,000
    • Finishing 2nd in the Group Stage – €325,000
    • Advancing to the round of 32 – €300,000
    • Advancing to the round of 16 – €600,000
    • Advancing to the quarter-final – €1,000,000
    • Advancing to the semi-final – €2,000,000
    • Finishing as runners-up – €3,000,000
    • Winning the competition – €5,000,000
Using this season as a benchmark, €1,164,000 is the lowest amount a side can earn after a group stage campaign as we saw with Randers. This means the lowest possible amount a Conference League champion can win will amount to €13,329,000. For lesser sides, this amount could help them a great deal.

On the flip side, the highest amount a Conference League champion can win (should they win all their six group stage games) will amount to about €15,190,000.

  18. The Europa Conference League success has taken UEFA by surprise. It shows they lost touch with the core soccer fans in Europe who love their local teams. For decades they've been ever more focusing on making money by appealing the non European plastic fans, who are more star gazers than true soccer fans. So the moment a tournement starts rolling, catering to the European fans of the clubs but the 16 money launderers, it's an instant hit with the European fans.
And the big bosses are surprised.

    Lex Lammers 28-06-22, 08:35 Laatste update: 09:14

    1 uur geleden in VOETBAL

Paris Saint-Germain moet 10 miljoen euro betalen.
