Please vote for our new tagline.

The top five taglines from the "Should we change the tagline?" thread are listed above.

Please vote for your favorite one.

The poll will run until Wednesday (5/21) at midnight Eastern.

And in case you missed the discussion in the first thread, the first option translates as follows: Abandon every hope, ye who enter here.

I really dont follow the league but, is DCU really doing so bad to have "lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" leading the poll???

Perhaps it's a warning to our opponents ...

Well, it's a little of both. On the one hand when things are going badly it's directed at the fans and the team. On the other hand when things are going well it's directed at our opponents.

That's why I really like that option. It's more timeless than some of the others.

"Fit to be tied" will make no enduring sense as it only reflects on our recent record. "Cheer up - we won't get relegated!" only makes sense so long as we're doing badly.

"Once and Future King" is better in this respect but it doesn't really float my boat. I like "More Cowbell!" but it's pretty esoteric. I doubt it'll be understood by many who don't regularly read this board.

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" is clearly my choice.

I voted Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate, glad to see "break a leg" wasn't a choice.

It was seconded but I figured Jesse wouldn't have gone for it so I didn't include it on the poll.

My Italian is limited to "Grande Baggio", and what I picked up in The Miracle of Castel di Sangro and A Season With Verona. Did I just miss an inside joke?

I still prefer "Dry Humping Towards Mediocrity."

    tagline

I was bummed not to see one of my favorite potential taglines among the candidates... from the official prematch thread before the metros game:

    "May we not suck."

I think it means "abandon all hope, you who enter here" or some such. Think there's a reference to it in the Waste Land, referring in turn to Dante's Inferno. Perhaps someone can suggest a less clunky translation.

On the other hand, it could mean "Makes a hamburger taste like a steakburger." Anyway, I voted for it.

    none of the above

While "United We Stand" is indeed a bit stale (and perhaps conveys an impression of patriotic backing of war not shared by all posters), I'm not sure that any of the potential replacements is a serious improvement.

Fit to be tied is too much of a "current events" tagline.

    Once a Future King sounds too whistful / grasping at straws;

"abandon all hope . . ." has promise but putting it in latin / italian is really a bit pretentious isn't it? Metroscum will eat us alive as DC snobs for such a choice.

"more cowbell" - waaay too inside of a joke.

cheer up no relegation seems kinda euro-referential - this is american soccer, we don't have to apologize that we don't have relegation.

I actually think that "break a leg" would be a great choice for the time being - humorous and self-deprecating - nice double entendre - especially if we could agree to find another tagline at a later date - how about once the team actually DOES return to glory and we could come up with something boastfull that doesn't sound like we're living inthe past.

    Just my $.02

    Deadset against the Italian jibberish.

Which means nothing except that it will be overwhelmingly ratified by my fellow DCU BS posters of course.

    Me 1999: Rongen's alright
    Me 2001: Bench Marco
    Me 2003: Fire Hudson

But if we're going to use that phrase why not just use it in English?

I LIKE the idea of having an inside joke be our tagline (it's OUR tagline after all), so will go with More Cowbell!

Simple answer ... nobody suggested that in the previous thread. That's the only reason it appears in Italian here.

Are we gonna do this like a mayoral election in Denver, where if no one gets a majority, we have a run-off between the top two (or three) candidates?

I hadn't thought that far ahead. Perhaps that's a good idea though since there doesn't seem to be any consensus here.

It doesn't seem totally right to choose a new tag that a majority didn't vote for.

    Thanks for the explanation Knave.

And a runoff is a good idea.

I think it would be most appropriate if the vote ended in a tie across the board...take your pick of 0-0-0-0-0 or 1-1-1-1-1.

"Sorry, we'd have a new tagline posted but we're all tied up at the moment."

I don't think that's what is meant. Its just basically saying, yeah we're bad, but at least we won't get relegated. Its not an apology.

That's why it's a lousy tagline. If we suddenly do OK next month then the tag will no longer fit because it's not flexible enough to allow for the possibility that the team will improve.

What that tagline says is that we suck and always will but at least this is MLS so we won't get relegated.

Truth be told, I'm actually fairly appalled that it's doing so well in the poll.

I would have voted for "Abandon all hope..." had it been in English. It would be kind of nice to have a tagline that could be understood by non-Italian speaking newcomers, y'know?

As it is, I voted for "Once and Future King", since that pretty much reflects where most of us fans are. Stuck on past glories, looking with hope towards the future. But none of them really blew me away.

I think I'm looking at it from a different perspective than you are. I look at it as light and humorous, while you obviously don't see the funny side to it. Nothing wrong with that, but I can understand your problem with it. Later in the season when we go on a great run and we're in the playoffs, it would look bad.

The Italian one is pretty good as well.

The "Cheer Up" tagline seems to ingrained and comfortable with our suckitude - WE'VE ONLY PLAYED 6 GAMES. Please let's pick something that can have 2 meanings so we don't have to change it.

    Lasciate is my nominee because
    1) Right now you have to abandon hope to be a DC fan
    2) Right now if you're an opponent's leg - you might not have hope
    3) In the future, visiting teams should again be abandoning hope when they come into RFK. Even now we have a decent home record.
