Not too surprised to be fair. CB is a pretty strong position for Spain at the moment. Iñigo Martínez, Pau Cubarsi, Pau Torres, Dean Huijsen, Le Normand, Dani Vivian, Laporte, even Mario Gila. Not sure Asencio makes top 4 out of this crop
I don't mind Asencio not being called up to represent his country to be honest. What he's currently involved with is arguably not quite what Spain as an outfit want to be involved with or be asked questions about. If the Hermoso thing tought the entire federation something is that press conferences make for bad court rooms.
This country lost it..
I am not willing to throw him under the bus yet, but he still has some things to learn and that's clear.
I think Ascensio is suffering with pressure he’s putting on himself. He knew last season no matter what he was playing as there were no other CBs to step up. Now Husijen is here, Rudiger, Alaba and Militao have returned from injury and it’s now fighting for a spot in the starting lineup. He’s young still. Not every young CB is a prodigy. I think having some bench time and working with Xabi will help his growth actually.
Last season he was given time to acclimate to what the manager and team needed from him. Right now there's no grace period. New coach, new tactics and nobody's quite figured out where they should be or what they should be doing yet. I feel bad for the guy because it's not the best situation to be in but I'm not confident either of Alaba or Militao will ever recover to 90% of what they were and Raul will get his chances.
Looks like Raul is struggling with the new system. Let's see how he adjusts. Better he get these brain farts out if his system now rsther than in the league and UCL.
I don't see anything different than last season. Penalty and red card are coincidental, but the habits were all there last season. Overreaching, overcompensating, just a matter of effort being rewarded and praised but technically the guy just showed a lot of spotty defending.
In case the club changes their mind we have a more polished and technical version of him over at Lazio. Just saying
No está siendo el inicio de competición deseado pero no tengo dudas de darle la vuelta a la situación. Es hora de trabajar aún más si cabe para seguir creciendo. It's time to work even harder to keep growing. Thanks to everyone for your messages. #HalaMadrid Nos salvaste muchas veces, y sé que seguirás haciéndolo. Vamos 🙌🏼🤍— Fede Valverde (@fedeevalverde) June 23, 2025 Fede: You've saved us so many times, and I know you'll continue to do so. Let's go
Not really pre-season games, this CWC came around just as quick as the season finished, with players getting little to no rest (due to NT games also) - I believe Asensio is coming off mental fatigue and it happens.
It's a mickey mouse ticky tacky whoopsie daisy tournament. The club that holds the true championship belt in terms of the sport at club level should not feel like this TikTok generation summer camp is worth this much "accountability". Two games, two blunders is of course bad but I'm not even that big of a fan of the player and I know it's coincidental AF.
I haven't invested that much time in the tournament myself, except for games that intrigue me and the bigger matches against two well-known, very good teams. However, at the same time, the club(s) and players seem to be going in hard on this and there have been some very good, competitive matches that we wouldn't normally see in CL for example. (South America vs European sides / J League) Asensio seems pretty angry with himself and at least that is good to see.
I think it's healthier to accept that mistakes will happen than to stew over it days later still. We'll see. I find it odd.
Bruh. THIS is the WORLD CUP of club football competition. It's literally THE biggest THING in club football and the dream of every child around the world. You need to stop watching those grainy black and white videos from the 50's and get with the times, Real Madrid and it's 15 European Cups is irrelevant in this day and age. A "serious" club doesn't have a manager who talks about his team needs to "suffer" or about players having the "soul" of a midfielder. Proper managers use algorithms, AI, heatmaps, X's and O's, etc.
